Performing Widowhood On The Early Modern English Stage, Asuka Kimura Jan 2023

Performing Widowhood On The Early Modern English Stage, Asuka Kimura

Late Tudor and Stuart Drama

The deaths of husbands radically changed women's lives in the early modern period. While losing male protection, widows acquired rare opportunities for social and economic independence. Placed between death and life, female submissiveness and male audacity, chastity and sexual awareness, or tragedy and comedy, widows were highly problematic in early modern patriarchal society. They were also popular figures in the theater, arousing both male desire and anxiety. How did Shakespeare and his contemporaries represent them on the stage? Canon Fanfiction: Reading, Writing, And Teaching With Adaptations Of Premodern And Early Modern Literature, Christine Schott

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

For most of Western history, literary value came from retelling and reworking the literature of the past. This reinvention of source material is not unlike the process of writing fanfiction, a genre that has exploded in popularity among young adults in the internet age. It also bears a resemblance the work of literary scholars, who seek to respond, sometimes radically, to the difficult or problematic elements in texts they study. In a climate of increasing indifference toward literature and scholarship, creative writing provides novelists and students alike a powerful way to engage with literature of the past and confront the …

But when they find out he’s left their inheritance to the church - mourning turns to rage. Freemasonry And The Origins Of Latter-Day Saints Temple Ordinances, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw

Interpreter Foundation Books

My first exposure to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came in 1988 when I first met my future wife, a dedicated member of the Church. She was pleased to answer any questions I had and to share insights into her beliefs, but I was uninterested in pursuing any serious inquiry into their teachings.

Written Out : The Silencing Of Regina Gelana Twala, Joel Cabrita Jan 2023

Written Out : The Silencing Of Regina Gelana Twala, Joel Cabrita

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Systemic racism and sexism caused one of South Africa’s most important writers to disappear from public consciousness. Is it possible to justly restore her historical presence?

Regina Gelana Twala, a Black South African woman who died in 1968 in Swaziland (now Eswatini), was an extraordinarily prolific writer of books, columns, articles, and letters. Yet today Twala’s name is largely unknown. Her literary achievements are forgotten. Her books are unpublished. Her letters languish in the dusty study of a deceased South African academic. Her articles are buried in discontinued publications.

Joel Cabrita asserts that Twala’s posthumous obscurity has not developed accidentally …
