The Background: 1846-1850

The term "Fillibuster" has a different connotation in modern times than that of a hundred years ago. Today according to The American College Dictionary, the term means, "a member of a minority in a legislative assembly who resorts to irregular or obstructive tactics to prevent the adoption of a measure generally favored, or to force a decision almost unanimously disliked." The dictionary also gives the older definition, which will be used in this paper. This meaning is "an irregular military adventurer; a freebooter or buccaneer."

The purpose of this thesis is to describe a number of …

Ailred Of Riveaulx The Consistency Of His Life And Writings With His Thought And His Profession As Cistercian Monk, Tyrrell Hughes

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The author confesses to a profound emotional involvement with AiIred of Rievaulx, Saint of the Church and man whose love was charity, the love that is like God's love. But this zealousness on his behalf was born after analysis of and reflection on Ailred's life and writings, comparing these judgments with the treatments he has received at the hands of various scholars, among them the fine names of David Knowles, F.M. Powicke, C. H. Talbot and Aelred Squire. The initial reaction induced by the comparison was indignation at the injustice done AiIred, but much more at the seeming …

Introduction

An inadequate banking system and an attachment to monetary panaceas are both characteristic of the American past. When the Revolutionary War began, the colonist were ill-prepared to meet the growing burden of financial stress in the newly formed Confederation. In order to bring some degree of organization to the unstable monetary system, the Continental Congress fixed the ratio between gold and silver at 15.3 to 1 and authorized the issuance of Continental notes redeemable in Spanish-milled dollars or their equivalent in gold or silver. But after 1780, "continentals" depreciated so rapidly they soon ceased to circulate, and coins replaced …

Prologue

I work very slowly on my lecture. My strength is failing and my eyes are so that I cannot use them by candlelight. I have many pages written with pencil and when I can get them copied in ink, I will send them to you.

My object in trying to have this printed is that it might live after I am dead and finally be adopted as the plan or means to bring about the true development of American Indians.

My days are numbered, as I am entirely unable to do any manual labor, not only from old age …

The Russian Revolution Of 1905 As Depicted By Contemporary American Reports, With Special Emphasis On The "Bloody Sunday" Incident Of January 22, 1905, Patrick Kay Bidelman

Masters Theses

Preface

On Sunday morning, January 22, 1905, a crowd of workers marched through the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia. They were led by a Russian Orthodox priest, Father George Gapon, who had a petition to grievances to present to Czar Nicholas II. As they converged on the square in front of the Winter Palace, they were fired upon by the Imperial troops. The result was a complete military victory for the autocracy and a casualty rate among the petitioners that has caused the incident to go down in history as "Bloody Sunday."

On Monday, January 23, newspapers throughout the United …

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder Jun 1964

And Yet I Have Loved Him: The Judgement Of William Of Saint Thierry On Peter Abelard, Rozanne Elder

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

On the second of June in the year 1140, a Council of the Church in Sens formally condemned as heretical nineteen propositions from the works of Peter Abelard, philosopher, theologian, and teacher of unparalleled popularity. Denying emphatically that his teaching varied in any way from that of the Church, Abelard appealed to Rome, only to have Innocent II uphold the decision of the Council. He upheld the condemnation of Abelard’s works, ordered his writings to be burned, forbade him ever again to teach, and, finally, ordered him to perpetual penance. The condemnation of Abelard can be laid to …

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross Apr 1964

Christianity Encounters Totalitarianism In Germany, Viola M. Gross

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

The German Church of the twentieth century offers a unique opportunity for study. It has twice faced a totalitarian government and has needed to learn to exist and carry on its witness to the Word of God in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles. The purpose of this paper is to contrast and compare the answer of the Church and the Christian to the National Socialists and to the Communists in East Germany, and to determine if possible if Christianity has learned the way through its desperate struggle in this century to continue its task under a hostile …

The purpose of this study is to make a comparative analysis of Greenup and Toledo, Illinois. The intent is to investigate and compare the historical origin, reasons for settlement, early development, growth patterns, industry, lines of transportation, and elements of similarity and difference between the towns.

Included in the study are interpretations presented as to why the towns grew up so close together, why one became larger than the other, why the one became the county-seat and still remained smaller, how industry and transportation are important to these communities, and the ultimate character which has evolved for each community. Also …
