A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber Dec 1979

A Study Of White Spiritual Music And Twelve Related Concepts, Charles Douglas Barber

Masters Theses

As in other folk art, White spiritual music has not been welI-documented. In this particular case, there does not even exist a clear definition of this somewhat unknown and often misunderstood phenomenon.

The intent of this thesis is to present and justify a comprehensive definition of White spiritual music. To arrive at this goal, a two-fold approach was taken. The first chapter of the thesis does not deal precisely with White spiritual music, but rather with related and complementary concepts which are more familiar to the average person. This writer feels that what one may know or think he knows …

Olavus Petri's Polemic Against Monasticism: A Translation With Critical Notes, Margaret Mary King Aug 1979

Olavus Petri's Polemic Against Monasticism: A Translation With Critical Notes, Margaret Mary King

Masters Theses

Olavus Petri (1493-1522) is considered one of the primary figures of the Swedish Reformation during the reign of King Gustav Vasa (1523- 1560). Olavus Petri's polemical writings, dating from 1527 through 1528, are particularly significant in relation to the 1527 Recess and Ordinance of Vasteras which deprived the church of its substantial political and economic powers and privileges. The importance which the King and reformers attributed to control over and termination of the monastic and mendicant orders in Sweden is evidenced by Olavus Petri's treatise, En liten bok i vilken klosterleverne forklarat varder, printed November 13, 1528. This document, which …

Functions Of Menace: A Comparison Of The Room And The Birthday Party, Lee R. Martin Jan 1979

Functions Of Menace: A Comparison Of The Room And The Birthday Party, Lee R. Martin

Masters Theses

An atmosphere of menace surrounds the action of Harold Pinter's plays, The Room and The Birthday Party. Several critics seem to agree that the menace originates in the outer world and threatens to intrude upon the security of a room, where people attempt to hide. But the menace may also originate within the room--from the inner world and not the outer. The Room illustrates how a character deals with a menace that is within, while The Birthday Party deals with agents of menace from the outer world.

Rose Hudd, in The Room, is dissociated from the outer world …

Fitzgerald's Use Of The Four Elements In The Great Gatsby, John Philip Hawkins Jan 1979

Fitzgerald's Use Of The Four Elements In The Great Gatsby, John Philip Hawkins

Masters Theses

A great deal has been written about the conscientious effort that went into the design of F. Scott Fitzgerald's popular novel, The Great Gatsby, with its various allusions and numerous symbols. A careful reading of this novel will unveil the author's preoccupation with numerous metaphysical images, particularly the four elements--air, earth, water, and fire--which are considered to be the essential components of all matter.

Fitzgerald uses the four elements in The Great Gatsby to coordinate mood and physical settings, to give dimension to the settings, and to bring characters into sharper focus. The novel employs four settings, each one …

Woman, A Vehicle Of Visual Expression In Contemporary Times, Tamara C. Bogue Jan 1979

Woman, A Vehicle Of Visual Expression In Contemporary Times, Tamara C. Bogue

Masters Theses

This paper is a discussion of a woman as a vehicle of visual expression in contemporary times. Certain artists have been selected for the discussion of woman as subject matter and as symbol. An overview is given concerning some trends that have an influence on contemporary society, women in that society, and consequently affect how women have been portrayed. The selected artists were chosen as representatives of "directional types" or "theme types" and some of the implications of their female imagery is discussed. The concept of woman as symbol in her historically recorded debut as fertility figurine ("Willendorf Venus") sets …

The intent of this paper is to ease the trauma encountered in the difficult transition from novice metalsmith to producing craftsperson. The major areas of discourse are as follows: 1) What is the most beneficial time for mental orientation toward one's career? 2) What actual steps should be taken along with this orientation? 3) How can the artist go about preparing himself financially for the burdens to be encountered in a craft business? 4) What comprise the major forces in the organization of a metalsmithing studio? 5) What kinds of equipment will the artist need to efficiently ply his trade? …

Influences On The Collage Of Ken Brewer, Ken Brewer Jan 1979

Influences On The Collage Of Ken Brewer, Ken Brewer

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze influences exerted on the collage of Ken Brewer by Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenberg, and Alberto Burri, to explain the evolution of Brewer's work, and to serve as a source of ideas for others attempting to work in collage.

In the first three sections of the thesis brief overviews of the work of Schwitters, Rauschenberg, and Burri are presented. Schwitters, a member of the dada school of art, was a pioneer in the use of collage as an art form. He, like other dada artists, rejected the social and artistic values of post …

The Ritual Of Torero, Harbert J. Jones Jan 1979

The Ritual Of Torero, Harbert J. Jones

Masters Theses

The thesis project is to describe the art of bullfighting as a ritual. I discuss term and principles which are pertinent to me, and as a means of artistic self-analysis. The thesis project is to allow an exploration into a traditional form of painting which is a challenge and of practical value to me. In part, the reasoning and mechanics are to be solved. Beginning with the origin of the bullfight I describe the evolutionary state of human courage against animal force. The Spanish had a tremendous influence on the modern art of bullfighting on foot. The difficult thing is …

Technician-Potter Versus Artist-Potter, Diann Marie O'Brien Jan 1979

Technician-Potter Versus Artist-Potter, Diann Marie O'Brien

Masters Theses

It is the intention of this paper to bring to the pottery student an awareness of the concept of technician-potter versus artist-potter.

A Study Of Basic Characteristics Of "The Man Of Tao" Of Lao Tzu And "Self-Actualizing People" Of Maslow, Kuang-Fu Chang Jan 1979

A Study Of Basic Characteristics Of "The Man Of Tao" Of Lao Tzu And "Self-Actualizing People" Of Maslow, Kuang-Fu Chang

Masters Theses

This thesis serves two purposes: One, it reveals the influences of Taoist philosophy on Maslow's humanistic psychology which has become the third force in the field of psychology; secondly it lets all those who have regarded Chinese classics as nothing but a bundle of obsolete stuffs know that an archaic well still has fresh water to be drawn out to use.

In Tao Te Ching, or Lao Tzu the book, the man of Tao and innocent child are highly praised by Lao Tzu and may be referred to as ideal characters of his mind. Metaphysically, Tao is the Way, the …

Saul Bellow's Henderson The Rain King: A Fusion Of The Comic And The Serious, George William Russo Jan 1979

Saul Bellow's Henderson The Rain King: A Fusion Of The Comic And The Serious, George William Russo

Masters Theses

Bellow's comic vision points to a compromise between the romantic notion that self-perfection is attainable and the pessimistic notion that man is ultimately impotent and thus destined to fail. Through Henderson, Bellow shows that although man does not--and ultimately cannot--completely free himself of somatic demands and limitations, he is nevertheless not defeated by them and thus not left a victim of emotionless observations.

Bellow draws upon four sources in Henderson's nature to create the humor in the novel and highlights Eugene Henderson as a comic hero by dramatizing that Henderson proves to be his own ironist. These sources can be …

Polar Opposites In Hermann Hesse's Novels, Karen Lea Nead Jan 1979

Polar Opposites In Hermann Hesse's Novels, Karen Lea Nead

Masters Theses

The object of this thesis is to show how Hermann Hesse utilizes polar opposites and to show how the integration of conflicting forces works in the lives of the fictional characters in Demian, Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and The Glass Bead Game. These four novels not only are representative of the progression of the individual, but together, they are a consecutive representation of the artist's own search for a unified self. Influenced by psychologist Carl Jung's theories regarding the process of development, Hesse portrays the protagonists in constant search of the self. Some of the characters …

Fielding's Clergymen, Kathleen Marie Puhr Jan 1979

Fielding's Clergymen, Kathleen Marie Puhr

Masters Theses

Henry Fielding presented more clergymen in his fiction than any other major novelist except Trollope, and his non-fictional writings--notably articles in his journal, The Champion--also reflect his interest in the status of the clergy in eighteenth-century England. In his series of articles entitled “An Apology for the Clergy,” Fielding establishes the criteria by which he feels clergymen should be judged and lists the qualities of the “true” and “false” clergymen.

This study reveals that while Fielding in his non-fictional works clearly explains the traits of the true clergyman, his fiction does not contain a clergyman measuring up to his …

From Selflessness To Selfishness: Various Types Of Deception In Four Of Twain's Novels, Kay L. Smith Jan 1979

From Selflessness To Selfishness: Various Types Of Deception In Four Of Twain's Novels, Kay L. Smith

Masters Theses

An interesting feature of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson is the use of disguise and deception. The basis of much of the novels' actions concerns people who, for varied reasons, set out to fool other people. Other individuals or groups of people are self-deceived.

Motivations for the deception vary. Some entail selfless concerns of protecting a loved one. Some illustrate desires to maintain one's own safety and well-being. Still others involve negative, base qualities such as greed, …

The Advent Of Sound In Motion Pictures, Michael P. Mchugh Jan 1979

The Advent Of Sound In Motion Pictures, Michael P. Mchugh

Masters Theses

This study traced the developments which led to the advent of sound in motion pictures. The hypothesis that the advent of sound in motion pictures was the result of many technical developments made between 1894 and 1930 was supported by this work.

Following a historical methodology the research focused on four questions: 1) How did motion pictures evolve? 2) How did sound become involved with the presentation of motion pictures? 3) What were the technological developments that led to the advent of sound? 4) What were the events that led to the acceptance of the advent of sound?

This study …

Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson Jan 1979

Black Attitudes Towards Social Affiliation With Whites And Its Influence On Academic Achievement, Alvin Finderson

Masters Theses

If blacks are to compete successfully in white academia, they must be able to communicate and interact with white students and professors. Acceptance of middle-class white students with an academic achievement orientation, as friends and equals, should enable or assist blacks in developing positive attitudes toward academic achievement. This in turn should positively affect scholastic performance. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between black attitudes toward social affiliation with whites and successful academic performance on integrated campuses.

This hypothesis was tested by measuring the association between black self-reported grade point averages and their responses to an …
