1. Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of slavery in colonial Massachusetts. Massachusetts was by no means an originator of this institution, for the practice of slavery predates written history. Its origins probably stem from wars of conquest in which captives were used for sacrificial purposes, but as prehistoric man adopted a settled way of life, he found it practical to spare his captives' lives and enslave them. The conqueror's justification for enslavement of his captives was that he had spared their lives, and thus they were at his disposal. In a sense, one could …

To what extent do different types of religious behavior vary with different levels of inner- and other-direction?

Religious behavior is multi-dimensional in nature, with several qualitatively distinct dimensions. Hypothesized relations between different dimensions of religious behavior and inner/other-direction, together with the assumed shift from inner-direction to other-direction, have been formulated to explain the now familiar, but nevertheless controversial, religious revival in American society. This revival is controversial in the sense that it extends only to certain types, or dimensions, of religious behavior. There, the human carnage, the destruction, and the ruin created grave pressures which spread throughout the world. There are as many interpretations as there are writers on the positions of American foreign policy during the diplomatic negotiations with Japan in 1941. Historians supporting President Roosevelt's position tend to blame Japan's imperialism and expansionism as one of the main causes of the war.
