Incorporating music into treatment protocols is a non-pharmacological approach to pain management. Music can aid in mood and motivation, and assists in coordination of movement through rhythmic entrainment. Few studies have looked at the effectiveness of music on pain and mood while actively engaged in exercise. In this study, patients in an inpatient physical rehabilitation facility were provided with rhythmically synchronized music during upper extremities exercises. Self-reported ratings (McGill Pain Questionnaire - Short Form and Feeling Scale) of pain and mood were taken through a pretest post-test between subjects group design. It furthermore focuses on Khomeini's strategy to oppose, destabilize, and eventually overthrow the Shah of Iran through various means. The piece contained in the following pages is a musical composition written for a standard concert band. The piece is divided into three movements, with a duration of approximately fifteen minutes. The title of the work is derived from the three different seasonal changes. The first movement depicts the summer season changing into autumn. In the second movement, one finds the music of autumn transforming into winter. Lastly, in the third movement one hears a musical depiction of winter finally giving away to spring.

The purpose of this study was to compile quantitative data to determine how hospice programs fund music therapy services, and to identify staffing trends (number of music therapists and employment status) and service trends (caseload, frequency, and length of sessions) for hospice programs with music therapy in the Great Lakes Region. Thirty-six music therapists completed the survey and qualified for the study. Participants were asked to complete a one-time online survey with 26 questions pertaining to basic demographic and staffing information, music therapy services provided and session information, and funding.

While southern college football teams remained all white until the late 1960s and early 1970s, Michigan State University head football coach Duffy Daugherty formed championship teams in 1965 and 1966 by recruiting the best southern black players. While coaches in the North recruited black athletes and played them regularly by the mid-1950s, no other coach took the risks Daugherty did to integrate his teams. Duffy Daugherty's path-breaking teams broke all the rules of integrated competition and forced southern schools to reconsider their stance on segregated college football.

Data was collected from 74 students enrolled in one of four majors in music; music education, music therapy, instrumental performance and jazz performance, as assessed by View: An Assessment of problem solving style, which included 34 items defining problem-solving style across three dimensions including Orientation to Change (OC), Manner of Processing (MP), and Ways of Deciding (WD) scales. The novels of Don DeLillo and Cormac McCarthy are heavily pervaded by themes of mortality and its denial. DeLillo's White Noise (1985), with its emblematic centerpiece of an "Airborne Toxic Event," was succeeded by the slim depiction of mourning deferred, The Body Artist (2001). Likewise, Cormac McCarthy's epic Appalachian novel, Suttree (1979), is ridden with images of death and strangled mourning, a work followed by Blood Meridian or the Evening Redness in the West (1985), a historiographic depiction of unrelenting, culturally repressed bloodshed. Through an examination of three of Jane Austen's novels-Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, and Mansfield Park-this thesis examines the picturesque debate of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries and uses that debate to frame a discussion of the moral values of Austen's characters. This thesis cites extensively from primary sources by Uvedale Price and Humphry Repton, practitioners of picturesque landscape aesthetics, and draws parallels between those works and Austen's writings. My thesis explores the role of Rudolph Virag, the father of Leopold Bloom, in James Joyce's Ulysses. I compare the migration of Rudolph Virag throughout Europe within that novel to the historical Jewish experience in the same locations Joyce places Virag. Although I detect parallels between Virag's movements and actual patterns of nineteenth-century Jewish migration, I argue that Joyce makes subtle changes in timing to create a literary connection between the exodus of Rudolph Virag and Leopold Bloom, and Ireland's political and cultural struggle as an English colony.

On February 12, 1853, Illinois legislated its notorious black exclusion law and soon after President Lincoln made public his Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the Illinois legislature threatened to condemn this policy but Governor Richard Yates prevented them from doing so. On February 1, 1865, the same state ratified the Thirteenth Amendment and a few days later, repealed the state's Black Laws; then on January 15, 1867, it redefined the state's citizenship to include blacks by ratifying the Fourteenth Amendment. Finally, on March 5, 1869, Illinois ratified the Fifteenth Amendment, granting nationwide suffrage to black men. This work deals with these …

At the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, abolitionist and anti-slavery delegates were faced with a direct choice: they could either explicitly end the institution, or they could allow for it to continue. If they had decided to push for abolition, the confederation would almost certainly have dissolved into two or three separate sovereign confederacies or countries. If they chose not to endorse abolition within the text of the Constitution, they could still restrain the facilitator of slavery, the slave trade, and continue to endorse the institution's end, while also maintaining the Union.

This thesis examines the relationship between rising Hispanic immigration and its influence on voting patterns. It examines thirteen Southwestern Michigan counties and compares averaged Republican voting percentages from past elections for the U.S. House of Representatives with the 2000 election. Previous research has established that Hispanics, with the exception of Cubans, predominantly vote for Democratic candidates. If this relationship is true for Southwest Michigan, areas with increasing Hispanic populations should display diminishing Republican voting percentages.

Intersection is a musical work written for orchestra. The concept for it is loosely based on the sounds and emotions that I associate with trains. An invitation to participate in a survey was emailed or sent to 503 self-employed/ private practice music therapists. As this study focused on describing current music therapy business practices, only music therapy business owners were asked to participate. Responses were received from 29% (n= l47). Results indicated that the typical business owner is a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) with a bachelor's degree who has most likely owned a sole proprietorship for less than 9 years. They typically work 30-39 hours each week and maintain 10-19 hours of contracts (primarily consisting of individual sessions). Most of the respondents work in …

Showings is a setting of excerpts from the writings of Julian of Norwich, a 14th century anchoress and mystic. While in her middle life, Julian fell ill, and, during the course of her illness, she received sixteen revelations of the love of God. She recorded these showings in two texts: a short version, apparently written soon after her recovery, and a longer one, written years later after she had reflected on the meaning of her visions.
