Object Based Workshops At The University Of Pennsylvania Museum Of Archaeology And Anthropology, Katherine Margaret Peden

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is a world-renowned institution, located on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The museum was founded in 1887, under the university’s Provost Dr. William Pepper. Dr. Pepper convinced the university’s board of trustees to create a building to house the university’s artifacts, especially those from the impending archaeological expedition to the ancient site of Nippur. Staff would no longer shuffle the artifacts between the library and different buildings, but keep the artifacts in their own separate home, the museum. The Penn Museum is the largest university museum in the county, …

Maternal Subjectivity In Painting: A Response To The Idealization Of Artists And Mothers, Heather Lea Reid Jan 2016

Maternal Subjectivity In Painting: A Response To The Idealization Of Artists And Mothers, Heather Lea Reid

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

The focus of this project thesis is maternal subjectivity in contemporary art. Despite the embedded theme of mother and child in the history of Western art, the subject of children and motherhood has become taboo. Likewise, a stigma exists in the art world about mothers being artists. This thesis explains the historical context that created the current art world paradigmone that still embraces romantic notions of who can be an artist, based on limiting traditional ideas of "greatness" or "genius." Such a model suppresses the voice of the outsider. This essay examines the mother as an outsider in artmaking by …

Students from Dr. Judith Ezekiel's Spring 2015 Women's Studies courses, "Feminist Activism" and "Women, Gender, and Black Freedom Movements," collaborated to create a booklet that presents the lives of a dozen black women who were killed by the police or who died while in police custody, in order to argue for the inclusion of black women in the "Black Lives Matter" movement, not merely as originators and supporters of the cause but as a group that is protected and remembered within the movement in the same capacity as black men.

Through The Eyes Of Pioneers: Accounts Of The Women’S Suffrage Movement In Dayton, Ohio (1890-1920), Michelle Schweickart

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

This creative thesis project looks at the Women’s Suffrage Movement in Dayton, Ohio between the years of 1890 and 1920, when the 19th Amendment passed. Research is presented to profile seven historical women who took part in the local Women’s Suffrage Movement. This project presents these women as pioneers and activists. It looks at how they interacted with the larger national Women’s Suffrage Movement, how it affected them and their actions, and how they in turn contributed to the larger movement, if they did at all. Profiles are on the following seven women: Hallie Q. Brown, Katharine Kennedy Brown, Martha …

Living Female American Composers Of Selected Flute Music Of The 20th And 21st Centuries, Donna J. Hangen Jan 2015

Living Female American Composers Of Selected Flute Music Of The 20th And 21st Centuries, Donna J. Hangen

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

Gender has an impact on 20th and 21st century female flute music composers and their ability to have music published and performed. Rigid gender roles and stereotypes often prevent female composers from being able to share their music with the world. Because their music may not be published it is not readily available and is not heard, so they receive no publicity or recognition. My creative work was a flute recital of music written by living female 20th and 21st century American composers which will accompany my project essay. The potential benefits of this project include fostering a greater interest …

Through the course of their lives many issues of interest to peace readers are explored, from the devastating impact on individual lives of foreign intervention in Haiti and US immigration policy, to the strengthening bonds of family and their resistance to severance by death.

Assessing the impact of localized change is the very premise of Francine Prose's novel A Changed Man; 2006 winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Prose promotes ideas of peace through the connection forged between two unlikely characters. The work captures audiences through the use of a simple and understandable writing style, while describing intricacies of variety among both individuals and groups of people, understanding, and interpersonal relationships, which comprise the main staples within the novel. This story of on-the-surface opposites coming together to increase the overall magnitude of world peace through small interactions between two or a few …

DLPP Reading Guides

World War I was said to be the war to end all wars. But who were the men that fought this war? What happened to them before they were soldiers? And what remained after? Andrew Krivak's short novel The Sojourn, offers some answers to these questions as well as offering a meditation on language and storytelling as tools for promoting peace. Words and shared language build relationships in this book. And at the end of the Great War, which consumes the middle portion of the novel, the shadow of these relationships is what remains, along with the remnants of …

What happens to a man when he is stripped of his freedom? What happens to a person when they are told they aren’t deserving of a fair chance? These are questions that, thankfully, very few people ever have to answer. Most are lucky to be born into a world where they are treated equally by those around them. Wilbert Rideau was not so lucky; he was born into a world that said he didn't matter. Trapped inside Jim Crow society with very few opportunities, Rideau would eventually make the choice to commit a terrible crime. In the aftermath of his …

Critical Memoir And Identity Formation: Being, Belonging, Becoming, Nancy Mack Nov 2014

Critical Memoir And Identity Formation: Being, Belonging, Becoming, Nancy Mack

English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications

Critique can function as more than a scholarly pursuit; it can become a valued skill for surviving as an outsider within an academic context. Because universities are complex, largely reproductive systems, being a hard worker and following the rules does not necessarily lead to reward or even much notice. Increasing demands and multiple layers of political machinations foster disillusionment and alienation. Participating in programs, grants, and other initiatives only increases the perils, not to mention running the gauntlet of publishing and tenure. As egotistical as I may be, it is best to remember that the academic universe is not the …

Gender Dimensions Of The U.S. Consumer Borrowing Expansion, Barbara E. Hopkins, Zdravka Todorova Jun 2014

Gender Dimensions Of The U.S. Consumer Borrowing Expansion, Barbara E. Hopkins, Zdravka Todorova

Economics Faculty Publications

The article calls attention to gender as a dimension of the expansion of U. S. consumer borrowing. The first section emphasizes that gender is not a dummy variable, but an evolution of habits of thought. The second section discusses how changing gender relations are connected to gendered product differentiation and market expansion. The final section connects gendered market expansion and changing gender habits of thought to the expansion of consumer borrowing. We argue that, in addition to the acknowledged role of credit, gender relations also mask the structural financial fragility of households.

Radio Waves, Will Davis

From Eugenics To Planned Parenthood: How A Black Feminist Can Reconcile A Troubled Past In Order To Accept A Promising Future, Ebony Davenport

De/Constructing Social Justice: Past, Present, and Futures

Science has long debunked genetic differences between races but prior to this knowledge several hundred thousand people believed otherwise. Fueled by Social Darwinism and evolutionary theories the Eugenics Movement emerged. This school of thought turned into a social movement and began as a method of reducing society to its most fit members. This scientific racism employed an insidious agenda to reduce procreation amongst blacks in America. This ethnic cleansing was rather overt except toward the thousands upon thousands of black women being sterilized unbeknownst to them. Key figures of the American Eugenics Movement contributed large amounts of funds to found …

Family Planning And Human Trafficking In China, Hanna Tarbert Jan 2014

Family Planning And Human Trafficking In China, Hanna Tarbert

De/Constructing Social Justice: Past, Present, and Futures

Divisions concerning best policy practices simmer underneath the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) image as a united body with one major exception: China's Family Planning Policy or the one child per couple policy. Within the CCP, China's 1.3 billion population is accepted, without challenge as a major problem that must be addressed ever since the party took a hardline stance in 1979 to reduce the Chinese people's fertility. An unintended consequence of the population policy is the significantly skewed ratio between male and female children, causing a scarcity of women, which in turn contributes to the continuous decline in the status …

From The Pew To The Pulpit - African American Women's Struggle To Gain And Maintain Leadership Positions Within The Church, Charlotte B. Chinn

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

This thesis will explore how African-American women adopt a negotiated reading of the Bible and the church in order for reconciliation of their contradictory experiences as ministers. The personal stories of Black women preachers, who were interviewed for this project, will reveal how a negotiated reading allows them to reconcile the sexism within the structure and practices of the Black church with the significance of the church as a site of personal fulfillment and spiritual liberation. In order to explore how African American women adopted this negotiated reading of the Bible and the Church, this essay will examine the significance …
