Francis Poulenc And Surrealism, Ginger Minneman

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

While it is true that surrealism was first and foremost a literary movement with strong ties to the world of art, and not usually applied to musicians, I believe the composer Francis Poulenc was so strongly influenced by this movement, that he could be considered a surrealist, in the same way that Debussy is regarded as an impressionist and Schönberg an expressionist; especially given that the artistic movement in the other two cases is a loose fit at best and does not apply to the entirety of their output. Threads Of Empire: Loyalty And Tsarist Authority In Bashkiria, 1552–1917. By Charles Steinwedel., Sean Pollock

History Faculty Publications

This book addresses relations between Russian imperial officials and the peoples of Bashkiria, in the southern Urals Mountains region, in the period between 1552 and 1917. Its purpose is to show the many ways that officials sought to weave Bashkiria into the fabric of Russian empire, as well as the ways that Bashkiria’s peoples shaped the process of their incorporation into it. Steinwedel rightly emphasizes the protracted, negotiated nature of this process. Russia’s “fundamental challenge” in extracting resources from the region was “to cultivate loyal servitors of the tsar who could represent and stabilize imperial authority” (4). As this and …

The Morality Of Superheroes: Gods No More, Jessica Testerman

Do you think a superhero is a god or a mortal?

Modern pop culture is saturated with superheroes; in fact, it feels like there is a new superhero movie every three months or so. Thus, it is no wonder that after being soaked in this culture of superheroes that act with impunity in worlds of their author’s creation that a someone should wonder at the morality of superheroes. In my work, I argue against the popular belief that anyone who acts “good” and has a superpower is a superhero.

I propose a new way of defining the superhero that removes …

La Magie Comme Paradoxe Dans Moi, Tituba, Sorcière Noire De Salem, Jamie Gaffin

The University Honors Program
