The non-importation agreement of 1769 and that of 1774 were protests for the preservation of British rights for Great Britain's subjects in America. The colonies were growing. They were beginning to feel their strength. The high spirit in the Virginia Assembly was due to the colony's rapid growth in wealth, population, and culture. England could put off the time when American would establish her independence, which she was almost capable of doing, by governing to the colonies' satisfaction. This strength was bound up in the young radical leaders.

Left Mr. James Luttrell for Oak Shade thence to Mr. L. Strigfellow where I staid all night. Heard that the Yankees were at Warrenton, also at Waterloo whick proved not to be so.Quite a warm day.
Friday 2.
Left Mr. Satingfellow for camp whick I Found 6 miles of Fredericksburg.
Saturday 3.
Went out on drill-
Sunday 4.
Moved camp some 2 miles up the plank road, found our tents on an eminence has some singing at night. Our chaplan did not preach.

There is a two-fold reason for the assertion that to the student of American History, and especially of those chapters dealing with the Old Dominion, a study of the life of Fielding Lewis should prove one of value and intense interest. First, there is the contribution which this colonial patriot made to the Revolutionary cause. To too great an extent we associate heroism in a time of strife with courage on the battlefield.
