This thesis attempts to tell tho story of the coal mining industry in the northwestern part of Chesterfield County, Virginia, The coal deposits in this area are only a part or a larger coal basin lying west or Richmond and covering several counties, but as the title suggests, this paper is confined entirely to the mines in the vicinity of Midlothian. No one has ever published a history of the Slate industry in Buckingham County, Virginia. Many geologists and newspaper correspondents have written from time to time, short articles and technical descriptions of various phases of the Buckingham slate industry, but all of the related published material that I have had access to has been somewhat sketchy and inaccurate. Consequently, this essay is an attempt to fill, in a comprehensive manner, another of the numerous gaps in the economic and industrial history of Virginia.

In March 1778, there enlisted in the Continental Army a young man, Griffith Dickenson, who was later the grandfather of David Vincent Dickenson.
This young man had been born in Hanover County, Virginia, on August 8, 1757. However, only a comparatively few years of his life were spent at the place of his birth. There was an unfortunate second marriage of Griffith's father which led to his departure, at the age of twelve, from the paternal home. Although Thomas Hood lived an uneventful and somewhat undramatic life, it was not entirely fruitless. His unparalleled misfortune in health and economy was scarcely offset by a felicitous family life; but his poetry--some inane, some mediocre, some excellent--balanced an otherwise pathetic existence. There has been no conscious attempt in this paper to present Thomas as an undiscovered genius. His works and his life have been evaluated for their peculiar merit alone, but a study of those has revealed points hitherto vague and misunderstood as well as forgotten.

The history of the region of Westham is largely the history of the fortunes of William Randolph and his descendants. Virginia's gain was great when the first William Randolph, a young man of twenty-two, lett England in 1673 and settled on the banks of the James at Turkey Island. Randolph was a gentleman of an old Northampton family and he quickly gained social and political prominence. His position was heightened when he married Mary Isham, the daughter of Henry Isham who owned Bermuda Hundred.
