The purpose of this paper is to show that, as the result of twenty-two years of intermittent warfare between England and the Netherlands, the English navy became established as the primary naval power of Europe. Also, I intend to illustrate that, as a by-product of this naval warfare, Dutch trade was seriously hurt, with the·major benefactors of this Dutch loss of trade being the English.

The apparent simplicity of George Herbert's poetry has caused much comment and much misunderstanding of both the man and his poetry. The popular nineteenth-century picture of Herbert as the simple, tranquil country priest is being discarded, however, as twentieth-century scholars of metaphysical poetry re-exa mine both the works and life of George Herbert and find little simple about his life and a magnificent craftsmanship in his poetry.

To achieve this and, the writer gathered material from the ten Pulitzer Prize winning plays of the 1930's, as well as other significant works of the decade as mentioned in secondary sources. No effort has been made to fit these plays into the time in which they were written. Instead, the writer has attempted to show the times as they were presented by the dramatists of the thirties.

A royal colony, Virginia nevertheless had been establishing her own common laws and "ancient" practices, at the the same time that English control was becoming increasingly inefficient. This paper attempts to establish a viewpoint from which the mature poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins may be seen in an informing light. The method of the paper is to trace "exponents" -- that is, images, words or objects that form motifs or patterns in the poetry. Similar to leitmotifs in music, literary motifs are likewise used to set forth themes. By tracing exponents we are "recognizing patterns of images and symbols that lead us to a consistently deepening appreciation of the literature. However, Joyce's novels take place in Dublin, which certainly is not the ideal habitat for large numbers of animals; and yet the number of references to animals and birds in his novels is astounding. The purpose of this thesis is to test the theory of cognitive dissonance as it relates to a reader's selectivity in reading controversial material involving his personal prejudices or attitudes. Festinger states that forced or accidental exposure to new information which tends to increase dissonance will frequently result in misinterpretation and misperception of the new information by the individual thus exposed in an effort to avoid a dissonance increase. In writing this paper I have examined the initial reaction of Virginia's leaders to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in the Brown v. Board of Education suit. My study begins with announcement of the decision on May 17, 1952. As the weeks passed on the Commonwealth of Virginia gradually changed her course, experimented with expedients, and set her mind on the course of resistance. the General Assembly proved this fact by adopting the Resolution of Interposition on February 1, 1956. A natural termination date for the paper is reached at this point.
