Chaucer's Criseyde : The Pressures Of The Courtly Love Code, Betty Ann Jaffee

When Chaucer wrote the poem Troilus and Criseyde, he created a heroine who stands out from other romantic med­ ieval heroines such as Guinevere and Ysolt. He created a heroine of such complexities that critics have debated her motives endlessly and have explored the psychology of her emotions with every literary tool at their command. He created a heroirie whose sin was so damning that it inspired Robert Henryson to provide for her what he considered a fit­ ting punishment; and it inspired Shakespeare to try to salvage the wreck left by Henryson to create his masterful play.

The explanation or this seeming paradox lies in education or the individual by experience to learn to make satisfying choices and to develop a strong will. The pragmatic movement has often been misunderstood; the most frequent misconceptions, which assimilated the philosophies of Peirce and James in particular to forms of positivism, reductionism, or crude voluntarism seem to be on the wane. Peirce's scholastic realism, his doctrine of signs, and his conception of truth as the unique and destined goal of inquiry now tend to receive the attention that was formerly reserved for his empiricism and pragmatism. A similar change in the estimation of James seems to be taking place insofar as his theory of truth is seen as much less simplistic than was formerly supposed; and …

By 1654, Milton had partaken of misery, neglect, frustration, poverty; temptation, and disillusionment, as do all men; and it was his hope to "justify" (actually to "explain" since, to Milton, God's "ways" do not lend themselves to mortal justification) these plights to his fellow man. He shared the troublesome question of the Puritans: why is there evil in a world created by a beneficent God? A sincere Christian, he hoped to find a solution to this religious embarrassment through Biblical interpretation and subsequent enlightenment.

It is my belief that Paradise Regained constitutes Milton's most concentrated effort toward solving this baffling …

This study intends to examine the career of Ellen Glasgow to determine how her personal philosophy is re­ flected in her work--and more especially in the characters of her long-suffering heroines (the sad ladies). Camilo José Cela, a philosopher and a consummate artist, has produced a series of works which individually and as a group, are a careful combination of idea and form. One work cannot adequately be understood unless it is also seen in context with Cela's other works. Each of the novels, short stories, essays and travel books, is united to the others by Cela' s overall existential philosophical outlook, and each rests on and at the same time illuminates the others.

Chaucer's Knight Tale has called forth much critical comment. Individual lines have been commented upon, characters have been analysed and the resolution of the poem has been discussed. Critics have offered suggestions as to the poem's meaning, but an interpretation that encompasses all aspects of the poem and gives the reader the feeling that all the poetic elements of the poem have been resolved into that interpretation has not been presented. Efforts ro free slaves in the Unites States legally took two paths--manumission ofspecific slaces by individual masters and emancipation of all slaves by legislative or constitutional act. During the Civil War, all slaves in belligerent states received their freedom through emancipation. Prior to that time, in spite of agitation by Abolitionists and other groups, attempts of general emancipation failed in the South. In 1831-32, the General Assembly of Virginia seriously considered the possibility of emancipation couled with removal from the stae of the black population, but the proposition faile dbecause of the enormous practical difficulties which such an undertaking would …

From events in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, a citadel of Southern segregation practices and American rascist attitudes, the Negro Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was to be pivoted to a pedestal of national prominence and of international fame. By 1958 King had become the symbol of the new black revolt locally, nationally, and internationally. Black had finally found a black leader to articulate their needs and demands to white America and for themselves. King's charismatic personality and powerful oratory drew both whites and blacks to him and to this cause. To some degree he unified the civil rights movement in …
