Antithesis And Reconciliation In W. B. Yeats' "Under Ben Bulben", Cary Albert Mcbean

An investigation of the life and writings of William Butler Yeats reveals a man extremely sensitive to antithesis in human experience. This sensitivity, it is seen, greatly influenced the course of his life, inciting him to seek harmony or reconciliation of the perceived antithesis. As one would expect, Yeats' writings reflect this life struggle. Much of his prose is colored by expressions such as "contraries," "antinomies," or "consciousness is conflict," while the poetry often deals with the course between "extremities" or "eternities." A study of his works is, to an extent, necessarily a study of opposition and reconciliation.

William C. Rives : A Study In Transformation From Democrat To Whig, Frances Taylor

William Cabell Rives, active in the party, political, and economic issues before the nation in the 1830s, played a significant part in the emerging and shifting party structure of these years. A Jacksonian Democrat by 1827, he split with the party in 1837, participated in the founding of an amorphous Conservative party where he headed the state organization, and finally transferred his allegiance to the Whig part in 1840. Key factors in this transformation were the economic issues of a national bank, the Specie Circular, and the Independent Treasury. In his attempt to find solutions to these problems, he kept …

In The Beginning: A New View Of Black American Etiological Tales, Daryl Cumber Dance

A substantial number of Black folktales may be designated as etiological "myths" in that they tend to focus on the world as it evolved and to frequently portray the role of God in explaining why the Negro is, to quote from one tale, "so messed up," why he is black, why he has big, ugly feet and hands, why his hair is kinky, and why he must remain a poor laborer in a rich society. Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard

Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor is not entirely an original work. Eleven of the twenty-five moments were either borrowed from Bach's earlier cantatas or were transcribed from the Mass into later choral works. In the process of borrowing, Bach often made significant changes in the original composition. In the preparation of this paper, each parody movement in the Mass was compared with the work from which it was drawn or, in four cases, the work drawn from it. Variants between the model and the parody were written down and classified. The resulting categories suggest insights into Bach's reasons …

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear

In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.
