The Military Career Of John Churchill, Duke Of Marlborough, Eugene H. Grayson

The prpose of this thesis is two-fold: First, it is the author's intention to present a short biography of John Churchill from his birth in 1650 to the outbreak of the great continental war of 1700. The second and primary purpose is to evaluate Marlborough 's military role during the War of Spanish Succession, while serving as Commander in Chief, Allied Armies, on the Continent. The four major battles to be emphasized in this section are Blenheim, 1704; Ramilles, 1706; Oudenarde, 1706; and Malpaquet, 1709, with primary emphasis on Blenheim. In this paper, I have attempted to explain the administrative and financial operations of the Richmond Symphony. The first two chapters are meant to serve as an introduction to the Richmond Symphony, and they help explain the circumstances leading the development of the present Symphony. Also, much emphasis has been placed on the expansion of the Symphony since 1957.

Since the purpose of this paper is to examine the financial status of the Richmond Symphony, I found it beneficial to compare the Richmond Symphony to other American orchestras with similar budgets. From this research, it is evident that the Richmond …

Baron Von Steuben And The Military Forces In Virginia During The British Invasions Of 1780-1781, Michael Mcmillen Decker

The subject of this thesis is Major-General the Baron von Steuben and his role in military events in Virginia during 1780-1781. Steuben came south in November 1780 with Major-General Nathanael Greene to help re-form, re-equip, and re-man the Southern Army. Finding Virginia potentially valuable, General Greene detached General Steuben soon after their arrival with the primary mission to remain and expedite supplies and manpower southward. While so engaged, Steuben also assumed a secondary mission when he found himself, for a time, military commander of the Continental and state militia forces in Virginia. One of the more neglected chapters of Hegel's Phenomenology, which contains neither the obvious drama of the master and slave dialectic nor the deep enigmas of the final pages on absolute knowledge, carries the somewhat puzzling title Das geistige Tierrefrh und der Bertrug oder die Sache selbst. Of the major commentators on Hegel only Lukács has suggested its central place in the design of the whole: Kojéve and Lowenberg (following Royce) have suggested vivid readings of it as an analysis of the conflicts and jealousies of intellectual, artistic, and professional work. The 19th century produced numerous intellectual currents which were expressions of an incompatibility with the modern age. In reaction to the emergence of a now, urban, petty bourgeois world the 19th century intellectual of ten assumed the role of a prophet, warning of the decadent course of history while portraying an ideal form of existence which could eventually be achieved. One manifestation of this expression of dissent was Romanticism, and especially German Romanticism. The Stylistic Characteristics Of Selected A Cappella Choral Works Of Ralph Vaughan Williams, James Bennighof

Several factors were originally influential in my selection of this topic for study. First, I was interested in Ralph Vaughan Williams' music and his compositional style. Secondly, I had both an interest in and a certain degree of familiarity as a performer with the areas of choral music and folk music. Finally, Vaughan Williams' short a cappella choral works lent themselves well to investigation, because they had not received much study previously, and because they presented a homogeneous corpus of works which was appropriate for this type of survey.
