The Reviewer (1921-1925) was a "little magazine" created by four iconoclastic young editors, Emily Clark, Hunter Stagg, Margaret Freeman, and Mary Street to counter Mencken's claim that the South was a "Sahara of the Bozart." Aided by R. L. Mencken, James Branch Cabell and Carl Van Vechten the editors secured contributions from the most famous writers of the time to publish with their "discoveries." This thesis contains the magazine's history, an extensive bibliography, and an anthology drawn from the most representative sections in each genre. The body of Arnim criticism of the past several decades stands in opposition to the reception that existed for one and one-half centuries. The reproaches of the Brothers Grimm and of Goethe set the tone for a maligning of Arnim that was not to be abandoned until the modern post-war era. The point of departure for the critical misunderstanding of Arnim lies in the apparent structural dissonance of his works; this has descouraged the audience from a painstaking reading. Recent definitions of metonymy, synecdoche, and irony, however, aid in generating a model that clarifies Arnim' s use of Romantic irony …

Because a single theological interpretation of the Sistine Ceiling cannot be made, the ceiling is a portrait of Renaissance concepts. Besides the personal struggles of the Pope and Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, the ceiling is representative of the whole century before its creation. Michelangelo has mingled both civic and religious sentiments into the ceiling. Michelangelo has combined his experiences in the Medici circle with his personal beliefs. The ceiling with its most basic depiction of the fundamental concept of man's aspiration of redemption becomes almost a chaotic representation of the history of man, but which contrasts with the beauty …

In the course of English history many legal courts have been established and abolished. There were two types of legal courts: common law and prerogative. Commonlaw courts had their basis in fmndamental laws and custom while pre- rogative courts were established by the king's prerogative for different reasons. Most of the prerogative courts were developed during the medieval or early modern period and were abolished during the Stuart reign. One such prerogative court was the Court of the Star Chamber. From The Sublime To The Political: Some Historical Notes, Gary Shapiro

Let me document my suggestion that modernist poetics tends to give a privileged position to what has traditionally been known as the sublime by adducing two examples from rather disparate traditions. Martin Heidegger's ontological poetics can reasonably be viewed as a renewal of the aesthetics of the sublime -- although Heidegger never uses the term sublime, so far as I know -- and is explicitly hostile to the limitations of aesthetics, conceived as an autonomous study of a certain kind of experience. Nietzschean Aphorism As Art And Act, Gary Shapiro

Nietzsche is commonly said to be an aphoristic writer, perhaps the master of the aphorism. Yet it is not clear what is entailed by this stylistic designation or how far it takes us in understanding Nietzsche's thought and writing. It is a mistake to see Nietzsche's writings as exclusively aphoristic, if this is meant to imply that his writings lack philosophical and literary structure. Certainly sections of those books (conveniently numbered and titled) can be regarded as independent aphorisms (if aphorisms are ever independent, a question which must be assessed).
