The Miller-Matisse Connection: A Matter Of Aesthetics, Suzanne W. Jones

When Tropic of Cancer was published in Czechoslovakia in 1938, a working drawing from Bonheur de vivre by Henri Matisse appeared on the cover. While the choice of illustration certainly reflects the admiration for Matisse's work that Henry Miller expresses within the novel, Miller's interest in Matisse as an artist also reveals much about the novelist's aesthetics.

There is much talk currently about virtue and virtues, and this, I suppose, is all to the good. But if the current debate aspires to be more than an academic exercise, it needs to show how discussion of the virtues makes a difference in moral philosophy. Any serious alternative to the status quo should satisfy the following three conditions: It should involve a shift in the fundamental vocabulary of ethics; it should reorder, if not reject, some of the emphases and priorities found in the status quo; and finally, it should issue in a reevaluation of specific acts and policies …

Loy Wesley Henderson: A Cold Warrior In Near Eastern Affairs, Anne Witt Perkins

Loy Wesley Henderson was the Director of the Office of Near Eastern and African Affairs (NEA) in the Department of State from 1945-1948. A veteran Soviet observer, he persis~ tently called for the use of economic aid in the Near East to increase American prestige and prevent Soviet expansion. Believing that American principles and national interests should be the basis of foreign policy rather than partisan politics, Henderson was a leading influence in the formulation of the Truman Doctrine but disagreed with the Truman Administration's support of a Jewish state in Palestine. Michel Aflaq : Founder Of The Arab Ba'th Party, Samuel Morton Mottley Jr.

This thesis examines the life and influence of Michel Aflaq, the founder of the Arab Ba'th Party. Aflaq's Ba'thists seized power in Syria and Iraq after military coups in 1963. Much like Lenin, Aflaq, secretary general of the Ba'thist Party since its inception, has emphasized the necessity of maintaining an elite vanguard of party leadership rather than a mass movement to insure the purity of Ba'thist ideology. This political ideology has, as its focus, the three goals of the party slogan: "Unity, Liberty and Socialism."

Almost 200 years ago, the first white settlers stepped on the shores of Australia. They were not there for freedom or opportunity, but rather for punishment. England's prisons were overflowing and their solution was sending the convicts away and forgetting about them. Australia's history and first eighty years of development began in this shadow. From 1787 until 1867 the English Government transported convicts to their penal colony in Australia. In all over 160,000 convicts were sent. The initial settlement and the reasons behind it were uniquel. England's attempt to establish a self-sufficient convict colony was the firs tof its kind. …

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, should not be categorized as literature primarily for children. These stories are works of art whose complex nature demans intellectual interpretation. Such a study is not meant to take joy away from the innocent and pleasurable surface of Alice's adventures. Instead, the usefulness of probing deeply into this literature is to reveal a fundamental lesson that Carroll imparts to his readers.
