This manuscript transmits ten measures from the so-called "Sextet" in the opera's second act, corresponding to pages 207 (measure 2) through 210 (measure 1) of the current published orchestral score. The passage forms part of the middle section of a tripartite structure that begins and ends with the renowned "Musetta's Waltz" ("Quando m'en vo"). At this point in the plot, the inhabitants of Paris's Latin Quarter, gathering to celebrate Christmas Eve at the Cafe Momus, witness the spectacle of Musetta's successful attempt to win back her lover. The section as a whole presented a problem for Puccini's librettists, who had …

A 1913 edition of the British magazine Puck features a two-page, full-color cartoon depicting Uncle Sam astride the Isthmus of Panama and the nearly completed Panama Canal. The cartoon also shows the pyramids of Egypt, the hanging gardens of Babylon, and other familiar human creations. Its caption reads, "The seven wonders of the world salute the eighth." Cradled in Uncle Sam's arm is a figure, a saluting, white-haired, white-suited mustachioed man with the name "Goethals" printed on his collar. This is my great-grandfather, chief engineer of the Panama Canal.

For persons persuaded by the rhetoric of sixteenth-century religious reformers, authenticity was a complex matter of access to the reality of divinity. George Levin's paper on empiricist "habits of mind" seems a strange place to start elaborating on that observation, for such "habits" look to be worlds apart from what I study, the sixteenth-century Calvinist adaptations of patristic and medieval ascetic spirituality. Yet Levin maintains that he has identified empiricism's near-ascetic techniques. "To know nature," he claims, "one must make it alien ... and deny one's own desire." In October 1983, just south of Barcelona at the annual Sitges Theatre Festival, beneath the railroad tracks in the claustrophobic space of a subterranean pedestrian passageway, La Fura dels Baus erupted into public view with an embryonic version of their first major spectacle, entitled Accions ("Actions"). The performance was conceived along the same aesthetic lines that continue to shape even the most recent work of this Catalan company. Accions consisted of a series of transgressive and, at times, startling exercicis pràctics ("practical exercises") intended to elicit an impulsive, visceral response from audience members. TESTIFYING before the Massachusetts Bay Superior Court of Judicature, Isaac Lothrop, Jr., politely described an altercation that occurred at his home in December 1733. Josiah Cotton and John Clark, he recalled, "had some discourse Together" regarding the house that Clark "had Lady Dwelt in." Cotton angrily informed his delinquent tenant that "unless he made up With him he might Expect to be Sued" for the unpaid portion of his lease. In Lothrop's words, "Clarke Reply'd that if he Saw the devil he Would tell of itt."

The Catalan stage is presently experiencing one of the most exciting, dynamic, and extraordinary periods in its modern history. Following decades of contentiousness, there is finally a harmonious rapport between the visually oriented theater of images and the textually oriented theater of the word, between the theater of collective creation and that in which the role of the author is essential.
