The Verdi Forum, Linda B. Fairtile

The peer-reviewed journal of the AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR VERDI STUDIES (AIVS). Early issues, first titled A/VS Newsletter (1976) and later Verdi Newsletter (1977-98), were edited by the AIVS's director, Martin CHUSID. They featured scholarly articles, essays of more general interest, and news items about performances, recordings, and conferences. While Nos. l-7 were issued semi-annually, beginning with No. 8 (1980) the Verdi Newsletter became an annual publication. Nos. 7 (1979), 9-ro (1981-82), and 17-18 (1989-90), collectively titled 'The Verdi Archive at New York University,' document the history and holdings of the AIVS Archive at that time.

Machiavelli's People And Shakespeare's Prophet: The Early Modern Afterlife Of Caius Martius Coriolanus, Peter Iver Kaufman

Both Machiavelli and Shakespeare were drawn to Livy's and Plutarch's stories of the legendary field commander turned political inept, Caius Martius, who was honored with the name Coriolanus after sacking the city of Corioles. The sixteenth-century ‘coriolanists’ are usually paired as advocates of participatory regimes and said to have used Coriolanus's virulent opposition to power-sharing in early republican Rome as an occasion to put plebeian interests in a favorable light. This article objects to that characterization, distinguishing Machiavelli's deployment of Coriolanus in his Principe and Discorsi from Shakespeare's depiction of Coriolanus and his critics on stage. More than fifty years have elapsed since the popular television program American Bandstand first appeared in homes across the United States, and still mere mention of the show continues to conjure images of teenagers, black and white, boppin’ to the sounds of emerging musical talents from Jackie Wilson to Dusty Springfield. This very image, and the potent memory of a racially integrated youth demographic dancing together in harmony, Matthew F. Post-Liberation Feminism And Practices Of Freedom, Ladelle Mcwhorter

Most feminist theorists over the last forty years have held that a basic tenet of feminism is that women as a group are oppressed. The concept of oppression has never had a very broad meaning in liberal discourse, however, and with the rise of neo-liberalism since 1980 it has even less currency in public debate. This article argues that, while we may still believe women are oppressed, for pragmatic purposes Michel Foucault’s concept of practices of freedom is a more effective way to characterize feminist theory and politics.

Logic, Truth And Inquiry (Book Review), G. C. Goddu

Mark Weinstein’s, Logic, Truth and Inquiry is an ambitious and provocative case for a theory of truth and warrant strength that will undergird an “account of argument in the broad sense of current argumentation theory” (p. 12). I begin with a very schematic synopsis of Weinstein’s rich discussion through his six chapters. Weinstein himself notes that his arguments are “frequently presented in broad outline” (p. 1), so my quick sketch will be even broader. I conclude with some brief observations about both what the book leaves unresolved and the merits of Weinstein’s intriguing book.

In 1576, after Edmund Grindal, archbishop of Canterbury, presumed to lecture Queen Elizabeth on the importance of preaching and on her duty to listen to such lectures, his influence diminished precipitously, and leadership of the established English church fell to Bishop Aylmer. Grindal’s friends on the queen’s Privy Council, “forward” Calvinists (or ultra-Protestants), were powerless to save him from the consequences of his indiscretion, which damaged the ultras’ other initiatives’ chances of success. This paper concerns one of those initiatives. From the late 1560s, they urged their queen “actively” to intervene in the Dutch wars. They collaborated with Calvinists on …

Do Employers Have Obligations To Pay Their Workers A Living Wage?, Javier S. Hidalgo

Jeremy Snyder argues that employers have obligations to pay their workers a living wage if workers stand in relationships of dependence with their employers. I argue that Snyder’s argument for this conclusion faces a dilemma. Snyder can adopt either a descriptive or a moralized account of dependence. If Snyder adopts a descriptive account, then it is false that dependence activates obligations to pay a living wage. If Snyder endorses a moralized account of dependence, then Snyder’s argument is circular. So, Snyder’s argument fails to establish that employers have obligations to pay their workers a living wage.

The three witches who initiate William Shakespeare's (1564 - 1616) Macbeth (1606) are the play's primary figures of theatrical spectacle, their bodies and actions the products of the 'magic of the theatre.' While much critical attention has been paid to the interpretive significance of the witches in Macbeth, much less has focused on the practical physicality of the witches' presence and the methodology of their theatrical presentation. The witches' entrance open Macbeth and is central to understanding their role within Macbeth's Scotland. [Review Of] Horace's Iambic Criticism: Casting Blame (Iambike Poiesis). By Timothy S. Johnson, Erika Z. Damer

Although Horace's Epodes were frequently dismissed by earlier generations as an uneven poetic collection of obscenity and juvenalia, more recently critics have begun to seriously engage with his first lyric collection. Johnson's important new study offers the first comprehensive English-language monograph on the Epodes since R. W. Carrubba's study of poetic arrangement in 1969. As such,Johnson's study makes a vital new companion to Watson's (2003) Oxford commentary, and his serial reading of Epodes 1-17 provide students and researchers with a novel interpretation of Horace's triumviral collection.

As the film directors Bertrand Tavernier and Laurent Cantet demonstrate in their respective films It All Starts Today (1999) and Entre Les Murs (2008), schools still reproduce social inequality and cultural stereotypes. One of the most important challenges teachers and professors confront as members of civil society, particularly in moments of social crisis or instability, is to promote students' critical thinking in relation to individual and collective rights. In 416, Bishop Innocent I of Rome sent a colleague in Gubbio what was to become one of the most important set of liturgical instructions in early Christendom. Innocent composed his remarks on, inter alia, penitential discipline and prescribed gestures during the administration of the Sacraments to deter other bishops and their priests from improvising. He claimed that bishops of Rome, as successors of St. Peter, had the responsibility to authenticate ritual observances and achieve uniformity in Italy and elsewhere.
