The purpose of this thesis was to document and evaluate experimentation in color collagraphs using combination printmaking techniques. The text deals with the emergence historically of the collagraph, the technical procedures involved in the making of a collagraph, and the results obtained in color collagraphs using combined printmaking techniques. The plates, original color collagraphs, demonstrate visually specific technical processes. Original collagraph prints are on file with the Department of Art, University of Northern Iowa.

This thesis was undertaken to explore possible applications of various forms of dynamics to contemporary jewelry design. The purpose is (1) to isolate design shapes which illustrate five types of dynamics: (2) to present five pieces of jewelry designed and constructed for this study; (3) to describe in detail the techniques and processes used to complete each project: and (4) to analyze the use of dynamics in the design of each project. This thesis is a report of an experimental exploration to achieve a tactile surface treatment in serigraphy through the adaptation of an acrylic polymer mixture developed for the silk screen printing process. Examples using the mixture in various stages of adaptation will illustrate the possibilities of the acrylic polymer medium.

The hypothesis that students who do not take freshman composition courses in college are equal in writing performance to students who do take freshman composition after being in college for an equal length of time was tested in the pilot phase of a recent study, The Effectiveness of College-Level Instruction in Freshman Composition. The findings presented in an interim report affirm the hypothesis. Since the theme evaluations for the pilot study were done "holistically," it seemed desirable to determine whether a closer and more objective evaluation of a sample of the student themes used in the pilot study would indicate …

His definition, stated in prose as: " ... a shifting of emphasis and significance from man to not-man; the rejection of human solipsism and the recognition of the transhuman magnificence.", presents a cosmography made up of three divisions: man, not-man, and the transhuman magnificence. The English language has undergone many changes since its evolution from the Teutonic dialects. It has become simplified in many ways; one area of simplification is in the second person pronoun. Originally nine different forms of the Old English pronoun of address appeared, while today only three {you, your, yours) remain. Although ambiguity can and does result from only one form in the nominative and objective case (i.e., whether you is singular or plural in reference), the English-speaking people have reduced the pronoun to the same nominative and objective form as a means of linguistic economy. The emphasis on chamber music may be considered one of the most interesting and important developments in the school music program today. There is perhaps no other musical medium which holds greater possibilities for the development of the student's musical ability. In the years following World War II, the instrumental music programs in many schools have grown to the point where there are sufficient string and wind players to perform many major orchestral works. A student who performs in either an orchestra or band, however, cannot develop a critical sensitivity towards ensemble.

The purpose of this study was to determine (1) if there was a low standard of rhythmic response in certain fourth, fifth, and sixth grade pupils in the Hartley (Iowa) Community School; (2) if it was possible to construct a diagnostic instrument which would identify the specific areas of weakness which may contribute to the low standard of rhythmic response in these students; and (3) if the results obtained from the administration of the diagnostic instrument would enable the writer to make recommendations for teaching methods and materials which may correct the deficiencies found.

John Steinbeck demonstrates a shift from the group hero, in some of his earlier novels, to the individual hero in his later novels. It is evident that in East of Eden and The Winter of Our Discontent Steinbeck is more concerned with the individual human being than he was in such earlier novels as Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath. A contrast with two novels which fall in an earlier period, 1940 and before, will clarify the development of the individual man as hero in Steinbeck's later novels. The ancient art of filigree jewelry has almost become a lost art. Today, some of the jeweler-artist-craftsmen believe that much of the filigree being done lacks the originality that could make it a creative art expression. Because traditional filigree designs have been handed down from generation to generation they have become copies of what has been done before. Filigree design, by the definition of being any thread-like decoration, is a linear approach to jewelry. A linear approach suggests delicate work with a lightness and femininity. The Wochenlied, also known as the "Hymn of the Week" or the "de tempore hymn," was a product of the Reformation. Its inception was found in the attitude of Martin Luther toward congregational singing, his resulting emphasis upon the chorale as the vehicle for such singing, and his liturgical reforms. The Wochenlied plan became an integral part of Lutheran worship practice in Germany during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its growth was fostered during the first one hundred years following the Reformation during which a favorable liturgical, musical, and educational climate for the development of this hymn plan was present. …

A style of art, known to us today as Art Nouveau, developed throughout the countries of western Europe during the 1890's. As a style, Art Nouveau had its effect in varying degrees upon most of the art forms: architecture, the applied arts and decorative design, painting, sculpture, illustration, bookbinding, printmaking, ceramics, jewelry-making, and other minor art forms. Then, after encompassing this wide variety of creative activity, the forms of Art Nouveau faded and died out just prior to the First World War (1910-1915).
