The 18th century was a golden age for flute music. The greater as well as the lesser composers wrote abundantly for the instrument. Perhaps the greatest composer of this century was Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), who made important contributions to the flute literature of that era. Bach's works can be divided chronologically into three stages: the early or "organ music" stage, the middle or "instrumental music" stage, and the final "church music" stage. We shall be concerned with his instrumental music stage and, more specifically, the chamber music which it incorporated.

Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 and died in 1941. Both his life and thought span the epoch of renascent India, and his novels realistically reflect the problems and struggles of the Indian people during the past century. In this thesis Tagore 's development, not so much as a great novelist but as a social commentator and reformer, is discussed. His role as a liberal mediator between the violent reactionary and the vehement traditionalist is a predominant factor in all of his prose writings, and it is from this point of view that each of his novels is examined.

The collages illustrate the ten verses of the song "Desolation Row" by Bob Dylan (from the album Highway 61 Revisited, Columbia Record Company Cl2389, 1965.) The paintings, Self Portrait, Studio, and Window, attempt to illustrate or describe, without direct reference to the song itself, the state of mind of the singer of "Desolation Row," The paper briefly discusses the personal importance of the song to me, and describes some of my working methods.

My recent interest in the use of cubic forms and rectangular solids led to the use of shapes that have a dynamic emphasis through the horizontal and vertical stresses of movement which interact in terms of structural and spatial dynamics. The composition is based on a twelve-tone row, and its derivative forms of retrograde, inversion, and retrograde inversion. These sequences of tones serve as a unifying factor through out the composition. The rhythmic texture has been so structured as to avoid metric patterns implying tonality. This has been achieved through the use of cross rhythms and avoidance of stress at regular time intervals. The composition makes use of motivic variation melodically, texturally, and arithmetically. This thesis is concerned with the development of eight, cone 6 (2232° F) ceramic glazes to be used in an electric kiln. These glazes were developed from a scientific approach in which the basic formula was calculated on paper.
