I have chosen to analyze several characteristics of Don Quijote, and his squire, Sancho Panza. I have observed that Don Quijote is on the side of the underdog, and tries to do justice in the world from personal need. Sancho tries to reason with him, and constantly reminds him of reality. But Don Quijote lives in his make-believe world of a past age of chivalry, and one can say that throughout the episodes he is out of place, and time until he recovers from his illness in the second part of the novel. This paper was used as an evaluation of the creative dramatics programming of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. It provides a brief history of the Kennedy Center from its conception, chronicling its development and construction, and explaining the purpose and philosophy of the Education Division as described in the Congressional Act that made a National Performing Arts Center possible. The operations of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts are diverse; the Education Division functions as the primary source of programming for children. One of the basic principles of music education is to expose students to music so that they can have the opportunity to enjoy it and accept it as part of their lives. This study investigated how repetition of a musical selection affects musical enjoyment for children in grades 1 through 6. The study also considered the process of directed listening as a variable which may cause additional effects when repeating musical selections. The 194 students in grades 1 through 6 at Sacred Heart School in Waterloo, Iowa participated in the study. These students were representative of white, middle-class families and …

Although scholars recognize many of Plato's early dialogues as works of significant dramatic merit, few attempts have been made to either systematically analyze them for performance or to dramatize them in their entirety. A traditional Aristotelian analysis does not facilitate bringing the dialogues to fruition in theatrical performance because of their lack of physical, external action. This study, recognizing the dramatic potential of Plato's Crito, undertakes an analysis of the dialogue for the purpose of performance . Two methodologies are applied: Speech Act and Structuralist Analyses. The study culminates in a dramatic production of the Crito.

As theorists and instructors of written composition come to understand writing as more than a product of putting thoughts on slate, paper, or screen, oral revision techniques such as student-teacher conferences and peer editing groups are increasingly being used during the process of composing. Recent reports indicate use of these and other speaking activities in the writing classroom, as pre-writing procedures and as revision techniques, for example. The body of my work indirectly offers parallels to the most ancient usage of the word "geometry" known, that of the "earth-measurement" practices of the Egyptians and Babylonians. Such practices were in response to the needs of everyday living. Although the later introduction of deductive geometry by the Greeks evolved into more complex and intellectual formulas, I felt a richer vein could be tapped by exploring geometry's earliest province: "earth-measurement."

Because media specialists cannot possibly read all of the high interest-low reading level (high-low) titles considered for purchase, the use of book reviews to guide choices is practical. Media specialists need book reviews which give specific information about the strengths and weaknesses of books being considered for purchase. Since .adolescents can find answers to their questions by reading fiction, fiction that portrays teenagers like themselves, adolescent books on the subject of adoption may serve as a source of current information on adoption and society's attitudes of searching. This researcher proposed that an annotated bibliography be developed in this study. The technique of content analysis was used and young adult fiction titles were selected which might enable the young adult readers to determine if they can find answers to some of their questions about their birth parents and whether to search for them.

A moral dimension is often intrinsic to YA literature because it is concerned with the problems of youth. This study examines the moral reasoning of teenage protagonists by applying the theory of Lawrence Kohlberg to the analysis of a sample of twelve books drawn from YASD's "Best of the Best Books--1970-1982" list. The sample was structured to provide comparison between type of book (realistic fiction and fantasy/ science fiction), sex of author, and sex and age of protagonist. In 1722, Bach completed his first volume of twenty-four preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys in chromatic order, entitled "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier" (The Well-Tempered Clavier). In 1742, he finished a second series of these works which became known as "Das Wohltemperierte Clavier, Book II." The preludes in Book I display a free, nearly improvisatory style, not bound to any set form. In Book II, Bach chose various standard keyboard structures as a basis for the preludes, with the result that they exemplify many late Baroque keyboard forms and evidence an astounding diversity of styles and moods. …

Dichotic listening tasks have been used extensively to establish the left cerebral hemisphere as dominant for linguistic processing. Dichotic stress has also been used to investigate lateralization patterns for individuals who speak more than one language and if those patterns differ from those found in monolingual speakers. Most investigations of this nature, with both monolingual and bilingual subjects, have found a right ear advantage (REA) for linguistic processing. Voice onset time (VOT) is the acoustic parameter primarily responsible for the categorical discrimination of stop consonants in a number of different languages, including English and Spansih [sic]. The development of sacred German baroque music is definitively illustrated in the works of its two greatest masters, Heinrich Schutz (1585-1672) and Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Schutz initiated the baroque movement in Germany when he infused the old polyphonic German style with elements of the Italian stile moderno and Venetian cori spezzati. The union of these styles subsequently became the predominant feature of German baroque music that reached its zenith in the works of J.S. Bach. A recent communication theory premise that individuals tend to arrange their thinking metaphorically is the focus of this study. Some communication scholars posit that humans actually think in metaphors. That is, individuals understand something by using one thing to stand for another. Humans communicate by comparing things they understand. Thus, we as humans actually arrange our thinking metaphorically and we understand things or interpret symbols by processing information through a system of metaphoric concepts.

A Content Analysis Of The Portrayal Of Suicide In Adolescent Literature, Roxanne Fox

The major purposes of this research were to analyze the portrayal of adolescent suicidal characters in books which adolescents are currently reading and to attempt to determine if this portrayal was realistic in the entire group of books. A panel of experts was used to obtain a sample of ten books. The portrayal of ten characters from the ten books were analyzed using an inventory of nine elements which were derived from a review of the literature currently discussing characteristics of adolescent suicide.
