Mother-Daughter Relationships In Young Adult Literature, Kelly K. Fischbach

The annotated bibliography contains a list of young adult fiction books in which the characters and themes are based on a mother-daughter relationship. The researcher searched for types of mother-daughter relationships and a comprehensive listing of books available on the subject. The mother-daughter relationships covered are mother-biological daughter, mother-adopted or foster daughter, mother- stepdaughter and mother-abandoned daughter. The twenty-two books included in this study were published from 1975 through 1985 and were available in public or school libraries.

This study, patterned after Carolyn Baggett's 1980 doctoral research at the University of Mississippi, was designed to determine if recommended realistic fiction published for young adults in the years 1979-1986 was significantly different (p = .05) than that published in the years 1960-1969 and 1970-1978, The "Chi-square Test with Probe" was used to test the frequencies of 40 characteristics. The categories contained three image statements which were used to record characterizations of older persons in the literature. One statement was a negative stereotype, one was a positive stereotype, and the third was realistic based on gerontological studies. Sixteen books to …

The Life And Unusual Ideas Of Adelbert Ames, Jr., Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

This paper is a summary of the life and major achievements of Adelbert Ames, Jr., an American ophthalmologist and perceptual psychologist, who had initially wanted to be a visual artist. He is most widely remembered today as the inventor of the Ames Demonstrations in Perception, the most famous of which consists of a distorted room in which people seem to shrink as they walk from one corner to another. This essay discusses the relationship of the Ames Demonstrations to anamorphic visual art, and it documents various comments by perceptual psychologists and artists who were directly acquainted with Ames.

This recital displays several musical styles in which the trumpet (and related instruments) has been and is currently used, The trumpet has been employed as a solo instrument and in an accompanying role, as well as a voice in various ensembles. The trumpet has existed in some form since antiquity. As it has been present since the inception of notated music, we are able to draw trumpet literature from every stylistic period in Western music. Pieces performed on this recital represent Baroque, pre-Classic, and twentieth-century styles of music in several different performance media.

My paintings are intended to give visible form to what is expressed in this poem. The series, "The Passage" (slides 1-11, 14) and the rest of the works in this exhibition, come out of a concept that has interested me since last year. The substance of this concept is a duality concerning the falseness of art as being one of its positive qualities and the realness of art another. I consider the paintings as part of a continuing investigation of this idea.

This thesis, entitled William Gillette and American Theatrical Realism of the Late Nineteenth Century studies the realistic staging techniques employed by William Gillette during the latter part of the nineteenth century in order to bring recognition and establish William Gillette as an innovator in the realistic staging of drama during the time in American theatre known as the movement toward realism.

The study examines four plays written and staged by William Gillette which range both in chronology of production and importance to the movement: those plays being Held By The Enemy, Secret Service, Sherlock Holmes, and Electricity. Using these plays, …

Italo Calvino is a twentieth-century writer whose work reflects a transition from realism or neorealism to postmodernism. This thesis will explore how that shift occurred. I will show how Calvino's early fascination with form, especially the techniques of oral storytelling, led to a later focus on form in his boldly experimental works. In the first chapter I will point out the early signs of fantasy in Calvino's neorealistic novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders. This novel's affinity to folktales and use of fantasy foretell Calvino's subsequent contributions to these literary genres. I will discuss how Calvino's work with …

SILENCE AND VIOLENCE began as a series of black and white photographs that attempts to depict strong feelings and emotions through the use of lighting, gesture and expression. This is accomplished in three stages: (1) Making the negatives; (2) Making the print; (3) Finishing the print using various processes (bleaching, toning, etc.). My approach combines the use of photographic materials and spontaneous decision making in all three steps to produce prints that are unique. The interventions by the Western powers and Japan in revolutionary Russia during the years immediately following the Bolshevik Revolution of November 1917 constitute a sorry chapter in the history of relations between the Soviet Union and its capitalist adversaries. The United States took an active, if reluctant, role in two of these misadventures. In July 1918, President Woodrow Wilson authorized the diversion of United States military forces to Vladivostok for participation in the Siberian Intervention, and to Murmansk and Archangel for participation in the Northern Intervention.
