An Analysis Of Six Months Of Juvenile Book Reviewing By Four Major Reviewing Sources, Marilyn Weber

This study was based on Zena Sutherland's 1965 research of review coverage of juvenile books by School Library Journal, Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and Horn Book. Sutherland's research analyzed twelve months of reviewing by the selected sources for the purpose of determining the number of titles reviewed by all four of the reviewing sources, by three of the four reviewing sources, by two of the four reviewing sources, and by only one of the four reviewing sources. The representation of nonfiction and fiction titles was also analyzed by Sutherland. This research study adopted the same objectives …

Performance In Family Narratives: An Ethnographic Study Of Oral Interpretation Components, Cathryn Anne Elmer-Baldner

Current folklore researchers have described the telling of family narratives as performance. The purpose of this study was to identify performance behaviors used by a selected narrator of family stories. Using oral interpretation of prose as a performance model, this researcher proposed that behaviors recognized as performance in oral interpretation were also utilized by the family storyteller. This study was designed to collect and analyze video-taped telling of family stories to determine whether the behaviors demonstrated by the family narrator in telling the story were comparable to behaviors associated with oral interpretation performance. The University of Northern Iowa Collegium Musicum performs a program of music representing works from medieval England, the Flemish School, and sixteenth-century Italy. The program also includes instrumental music and a selection of Elizabethan madrigals. The ensemble performing this program, the Collegium Musicum, consists of recorders, crumhorns, strings, harpsichord, troubador harp, guitar, and eighteen singers utilized in various combinations.

John Stanley (1714-1786) was an English composer and organist, blind from the age of three, who was most widely known for his performance of organ voluntaries. His performances attracted musicians, including his colleague Handel, from all over London and the surrounding area. The Suite #1 of Trumpet Voluntaries is a collection including two movements from Ten Voluntaries for the Organ or Harpsichord Composed by John Stanley, volume six, published by John Johnson of London in 1752, and one movement from volume seven of the same collection, published by Johnson in 1754. The fantasia which opens the recital is one of the Twelve Fantasias for transverse flute without continua written by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). Telemann's combination of the French style galant with the learned style was described by Romain Rolland as having let in "currents of fresh air" to German instrumental music. Although he remained true to French affections, he looked upon harmony as the proper vehicle for heightened expression. His uncomplicated textures reveal his importance as a link between late Baroque and the new classical style. The Twelve Fantasias are a faithful reflection of this era. Spirited and lively while …

My thesis has consisted of searching out the visual essence of the representational world and presenting it in abstract paintings. When I began my thesis, I had been painting in a representational mode and found that I was drawn to certain components of interior and exterior environments that excited me: geometrical structure, space, color, light, and mood. My work became more abstract because I made a decision to leave out extraneous detail and focused in on these important visual elements. Mycenae was conceived in September 1982 and was completed in January 1983. It is scored for orchestra and two narrators prerecorded on tape. The composition was inspired by a poem by Greek poet George Seferis entitled "Mycenae." In an effort to stay within programmatic planes, the music reflects many of the metaphorical ideas of the poem and materializes them - or realizes them - by exploiting unusual sound effects. The poem thrives on the use of symbolism and metaphor by drawing analogues between the tragedy of one of the most prominent ancient civilizations (the civilization of Mycenae) and the tragedy …

This study proposed to investigate the kinds of Native American materials which were found in elementary school library media centers in Iowa Education Agency Seven (AEA 7). A questionnaire was prepared with seventeen recommended titles and fifteen presently criticized titles on which media specialists in AEA 7 were to indicate availability in their media centers. The hypothesis to be tested was: Given a list of books containing both reconnnended and presently criticized titles, 75 percent of school library specialists in AEA 7 will indicate that there are more recommended titles than presently criticized titles on Native Americans in their fiction …

The present study examines native English speakers' perception of English sentences reproduced by Vietnamese speakers. The work is based on the question of whether Vietnamese speakers who use tone to make lexical distinctions in their own language can reproduce syntactical and lexical distinctions in English and if native English speakers can judge these distinction so Previous experiments done on intonation, stress and tone are discussed, followed by an examination of similarities and differences between Vietnamese and English prosody. A common dilemma in a majority of museums is the proper management of a firearms collection, especially modern military weapons. This thesis focuses on contemporary British writer Margaret Drabble's ninth and most recent novel, The Middle Ground, as novel and as metaphor. "The middle ground" is a metaphor for the British middle class, about whom Drabble mostly writes; for middle age, which she herself is entering, along with Kate Armstrong, protagonist of the novel; and for the style and stage of Drabble's own career. But, the "middle ground" is an equally apt, if less obvious, metaphor for the narrative which provides the nearly plotless story of The Middle Ground, the area of human relationships, mostly circling Kate. The proposal and manuscript for Quatie is an attempt to write a children's book which projects a positive image of Native Americans to white and Native people. Research for the project involved a review of children's literature on Cherokees, information on writing for children, illustrations, and Cherokee history. The book was set in the Cherokee Nation 1878. The main characters were two female Cherokee children and their grandmother. Before writing, elements of the plot were sent to the Cherokee Nation officers for prior approval. After completion, the manuscript was sent with an evaluation form to the Cherokee Nation. The purpose of this study was to examine and evaluate the portrayal of death in selected fiction books for adolescents. The sample for the study consisted of eleven books selected by a committee of professionals in the field of adolescent literature. These are books that tend to be available to adolescents in libraries. A method of content analysis was applied'as the research design in which each book was analyzed on a basis of seven categories.

It was found that most of the books do handle the death theme realistically. In death vocabulary the most frequently used words were "die", "dead", …

The major purpose of this research was to determine if a list of prototype questions, structured to elicit cognitive responses at the upper levels of the Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, would be sufficiently productive when applied to the episodes in twelve books that they may elicit higher level thinking from gifted readers at the fourth through sixth grade levels.

Eighty questions were developed through the use of a mini-course entitled, "Higher Cognitive Questioning" secured from Cooperative Network Inservice Resources (CNIR), and two Gifted and Talented Workshops presented to the Marshalltown Schools by Educational Consulting Associates (ECA).
