Fairy tales continue to be a very popular form of children's literature. The contributions that fairy tales make to children's developmental needs have been investigated by various experts, who have analyzed the stories in terms of the theories of Freud, Jung, Piaget, Kohlberg, and various social scientists. In view of the consensus that it is best if children have access to both a large number and a large variety of folk and fairy tales, a fair tale from a translation of the Grimms' collection was selected, retold, and illustrated. A content analysis technique was used to examine 16 children's books to determine whether the growth and development of the 24 main characters fit the growth and development of real-life children of the same chronological age.

Books published since 1982 with main characters who were eight, nine, ten, and eleven years of age were selected from Booklist and Best Books for Children. ·Descriptions and actions of the main characters were examined in the categories of general behavior, self-concept, social relations, and school orientation. The purpose of the research was to design an Oral History Unit for the Composition II course at Washington High School in Vinton, Iowa. This research study used a content analysis technique to assess the portrayal of the European who emigrated to the United States from Europe between the years of 1832 and 1932. Portrayals were found in 15 works of historical fiction written for children or young adults and published after 1950 in the United States.

Descriptive occurrences in each book were examined for the realistic portrayal of the immigrant experience in six general areas: (1) the Americanization process, (2) the educational experience of the immigrant, (3) employment opportunities, (4) family relations, (5) conditions encountered during the emigration process, and (6) reasons for …

Two Latin American works, Quarup (Callado, 1967) and Los pasos perdidos (Carpentier, 1959) interpret in their protagonists the perennial problem of the modern alienated human in the metropolis. The introduction to this thesis shows how this alienated protagonist is a central preoccupation in Latin American literature since the beginning of modern urbanization and industrialization in the hemisphere. The loss of any real human identity in modern life inevitably leads to the search for new, cultural and personal identity. The Female Hero: An Analysis Of Female Protagonists In Modern Epic High Fantasy Novels, Donald L. Osterhaus

The role of the modern epic high fantasy hero was defined as having the following seven traits among its essential elements: autonomy, resourcefulness, dignity, self reliance, inspiration, physical ability, self knowledge. Thirteen female heroes from modern epic high fantasy novels were analyzed as to what degree they displayed those traits. Data confirmed the hypothesis that women cast in the role of hero in this type of novel display the same traits that men do. A second hypothesis, that the female heroes would tend to be single and then marry at the end of the novel was supported by data, as …

Historians have traditionally viewed the Westward Movement in terms of the male experience and ignored the role of women completely. Because the woman's role in the settlement of the West was often a domestic role, it has been assigned little importance. Women were, however, instrumental in the pioneering of the West, especially in the Midwest and Great Plains. History textbooks often provide little information on women. The interest In the Vietnam War is Increasing after years of being ignored. The body of literature about the Vietnam War is growing rapidly. Using this literature in high school courses to study the war is encouraged. Using literature to study a historical event personalizes it for the students.

The researcher read 45 novels and personal narratives about the Vietnam War. Each novel was tested for four values and inclusion of stereotyped secondary characteristics.
