As a senior at the University of Northern Iowa ( UNI), my project to fulfill a segment of my Presidential Scholarship is to plan and propose a structure change for leadership within the UNI English Club. Currently, I am acting as an intern for the English Department. For my internship, I act as the student contact for the four student organizations/activities within the department: English Club, Inner Weather, Sigma Tau Delta, and The Student As Critic Conference (an annual, state wide essay competition held on campus).

This study investigated public high school teachers perceptions about religions in the curriculum, and practices of public high school teachers when teaching about religions in public high school classrooms. The study used a modified version of the analytical induction model of qualitative research presented by (Bogdan & Biklen, 1982). Three pre-selected high schools in the state of Iowa were identified by the researcher for study. A common departmental structure was used to identify teachers from across the curriculum as participants in the study. The schools were of three different enrollment sizes. Sophie Zawistowska, the title character in William Styron's novel Sophie's Choice, has a severe identity problem. She acts as dutiful daughter, unfulfilled spouse, desperate mother, impassioned lover, tragic victim, unquestioning accomplice, and guilt-consumed survivor. Many of these characterizations conflict directly with each other. Sophie also speaks six languages and identifies at various times with speakers of German, Polish, French, Russian, English, and Yiddish, language groups that often conflict, as well. Although Sophie has various identities, she doesn't have a unified sense of self. Her native land, Poland, with which she might identify, has an identity crisis of its own, as …

The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was founded in 1905 as an industrial union: an organization of working people based on where they worked rather than the type of work they performed. From the beginning, the IWW was militant in its rhetoric. The preamble to its constitution declared: "The working class and the employing class have nothing in common." The IWW also advocated direct action (e.g., strikes and sabotage) as the means by which to accomplish their goal of a complete take-over of the means of production by the working class. This recital was performed by Laurie Hoeppner on March 9, 1990 in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music in performance (bassoon) degree. The pieces were representative of various style periods, including Baroque, Classic, and Twentieth Century. Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was an Italian composer of the baroque era. He learned to play . the violin under his father's instruction, but later turned his attention to vocal and contrapuntal studies. Following his father's wishes, Marcello also pursued a legal career during his lifetime. Marcello's music includes a variety of genres; the Sonata in G Major is typical of his style. The …

The Piano Sonata in C major, L. 104, by Domenico Scarlatti, is perhaps the best known of Scarlatti's sonatas. It is the only one with a recapitulation which mirrors in each possible detail the parts of the exposition. Small though its proportions are (sixty-six measures), this piece nevertheless contains within 1 t all the essential elements of classical sonata form. The opening subject in C major is followed by a second subject in G major, distinct in its rhythmic and melodic contours from the first. The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to answer the question: Can the early experiences in the life of Lynn Hall be identified as influences that are revealed in her books? These influences were identified by Hall in her autobiographical sketches.

Thirty fiction books were selected by a stratified random sampling technique from a list of titles arranged by publication date, then in alphabetical order by title. After each book was read, the influences and comments were recorded on a checklist and tabulated to test the seven hypotheses. The findings revealed the majority of the main characters …

The American theatre of the early nineteenth century was strongly dependent upon the European theatre. American theatre goers looked across the ocean to import talent, playwrights, plays, and actors. Not until mid-century did America begin to develop its wold-wide theatre influence. Specifically, the latter half of the nineteenth century yielded one of the most influential director/playwrights of the American theatre until that time. Selection for the list was determined by the following criteria: a) books written by the black South African authors living in the country or in exile, b) material includes novels and collection of short stories, c) all material is written in English and, d) copyright date of 1976-1986. The purpose of this study was to determine if popular Czech folklore could be located, rewritten and illustrated in a manner which would vivify aspects of ancient Czech life. A literature search and personal interviews revealed five legends which were well-known by most Czechs. heads of Czech societies in the United States verified which was the best known. The legend was then rewritten in picture storybook form and illustrated to convey information about the costumes, geography, and landmarks of these people.

This research study was conducted to determine how child abuse was portrayed in fiction literature for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade. Sixteen novels published in or after 1978 were analyzed. All of the titles were located through the use of selective bibliographies and were positively reviewed in Booklist or School Library Journal. The novels focused on the victims of child abuse who were at least one of the main characters and who spent at least part of the book in the abusive environment.

Psychological, physical, and sexual abuse and neglect were all evident in the children's novels, with psychological …

The purpose of this study was to show that Mother Goose endures. The researcher expected that by looking at the more recent versions, one could see how these versions differed from the original in language and illustration. Content analysis was conducted to determine the extent of change in the language and illustrations of six selected Mother Goose nursery rhymes from thirteen copyrighted original collections from 1968-1988. Rhymes were compared with original rhymes as represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes to determine the degree of change in both the language and the illustrations. Percy Aldridge Grainger (1882-1961) is acknowledged by most wind conductors as a major contributor to the field of wind music. He achieved this distinction through his numerous compositions for varying combinations of wind instruments. Many of his works have become standard repertory pieces for the wind band medium: Lincolnshire Posy. Colonial Song, Irish Tune from County Derry, Molly on the Shore, Children's March, and Country Gardens are but a few. In addition to these standard pieces, Grainger arranged for winds numerous compositions which were originally conceived for another medium.

The purpose of this study was to identify recruitment practices and other selected factors that could be utilized to increase undergraduate student enrollment in three types of graphic arts programs: education, technology, and management. The study involved graphic arts faculty and students in 76 colleges and universities in the United States.

Six instruments were used to secure data. These included two preliminary devices, three faculty opinionnaires, and one student opinionnaire. Each faculty opinionnaire focused on one of three graphic arts programs and contained a list of 32 recruitment practices. Prairie Idyll: An Original Composition For Orchestra, Peter Hamlin

Prairie Idyll is an orchestra composition scored for flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, and trumpets in pairs, four horns, percussion, harp, and medium-sized string section. The availability of exceptional solo players in the first performances encouraged virtuosic writing in many of the parts. The work developed as a musical interpretation of the Cedar Hills Sand Prairie, a small, protected virgin patch of prairie in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The landscape inspired the moods that run through the piece, as well as the asynchronous and layered rhythmic devices employed throughout.

The Terpsichore Collection Of Michael Praetorius, Judith G. Freshwater

The Terpsichore musarum was compiled and published in 1612 by Michael Praetorius, a man of many accomplishments. The secular pieces in Terpsichore represent a major departure from his otherwise religious musical output. Roughly a third of the tunes in the collection are borrowed from contemporary lute tablatures, while the remainder are French dance melodies given to Praetorius by the dance master Antoine Emeraude and the violinist Francisque Caroubel. The collection consists of 312 dances including branles, courantes , ballets, voltes, and passamezzos. Praetorius published it in 1612 in a set of five part books . A modern edition, prepared by …
