To pursue the combination of Eastern and Western aesthetics in visual communication, I came to study in the United States from China. As a graphic designer, the juxtaposition of my Chinese and American education and working experiences enable me to perceive and approach design works cross-culturally. My thesis is the continuous exploration of the affinity between Eastern and Western design elements in visual communication. My thesis is that a variety of external stimuli both analytical and technical are synthesized in my art. By this process I am then motivated to give form to my paintings through a search for a unique personal experience. My thesis exhibition Under The Canopy Of Heaven consisted of eight mixed media and collage paintings on raw polyester and were a direct result of my observation and manipulation of this synthesis. Inspirations Diabolique ( 1965), a multiple percussion solo m five movements by Rick Tagawa, was chosen for the opening piece in the recital. This piece is composed for four suspended cymbals, bongo drums, tambourine, two snare drums, field drum, and bass drum. Sticks, wire brushes, triangle beaters, and four soft mallets are indicated and provide the opportunity for a variety of sounds.

Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg

The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to focus on the nature of traditional religious and spiritual elements in young adult fiction books.
Thirty-two books from ALA/s "Best of the Best Books 1966-1986" were read, and eight religious contexfs were checked. The findings revealed over one half of the books included moderate traditional religious contexts. About three fourths of the religious contexts were positive, but over one half of them were also negative. Most of the negatives were applied to religious workers and participants in religion. The one book which had strong religious context was totally negative. …

The primary intention of my studio thesis, as a graduate student in graphic design in the UNI Department of Art, is an intensive study of the design of publications. This study involves the use of computers, computer software, and related technology in my approach to researching, planning, and executing each project presented in my studio thesis . The series of paintings and drawings I have completed for my thesis exhibition, "Falling in Love," is the visual culmination of my personal approach to the creation of art: allowing a work to develop without the imposition of formal concerns. It is an autobiographical series, a visual journal, and approached with the belief that art comes from life and that my art comes specifically from my life. This researcher analyzed thirty-eight Caldecott and New York Time Choice of Best Illustrated Children's Books of the Year from 1985-1990 by means of a checklist to determine if 1) twice as many male characters will be pictured or refered to than females 2) female characters will exhibit twice as many passive traits than do male characters 3) male characters will be portrayed in three times as many careers 4) females will be shown twice as often in domestic/nurturing roles as males 5) male characters will be shown in twice as many instances caring for and protecting female characters than being …

The Portrayal Of Sexual Abuse In Young Adult Literature, Mary Oelmann

The purpose of this content analysis was to determine how the characters who are victims of sexual abuse are portrayed in young adult literature. This study examined the characteristics of the child who has been sexually abused, the abuser, and the home structure of the victim.
Eleven novels, published and reviewed since 1980, were analyzed for content. The researcher used standard recommending journals and bibliographies to identify possible novels for analysis. Books selected had a focus on sexual abuse.
The researcher found incest to be the main type of sexual abuse in 64% of the novels. The majority of the …
