The Portrayal Of Characters With Physical Disabilities In Children’S Literature, Marilyn Newhouse

This research study used a content analysis technique to analyze 25 fiction books which featured a character having a physical disability. All books were published between 1980-1990 and were at a fourth through sixth grade reading level. A comparison was made to determine if the portrayal of physically disabled characters has changed from their portrayal in books written prior to 1980.
In the books chosen for this study the physically disabled characters were typically juvenile, Caucasian, and male. Orthopedic disorders were most frequently portrayed. The majority of the physically disabled characters were portrayed in important family and societal roles, and …

The focus of my studio/thesis work has been to produce actual publications and a package design through the use of the computer. I strove to fulfill the desires of my clients while maintaining a high level of design. Community, History, And Individual Wholeness In The Novels Of Toni Morrison: Recasting The Myth Of Self, Richard L. Campbell

The wholeness of the fictional characters of Toni Morrison is linked with their relationship to historical and communal values. Those characters who move toward a feeling of authenticity or psychological completeness are those who realize the value of the past to their present existence and the importance of significant relationships with those around them. Characters who are distanced from these values, however, are unable to realize a sense of wholeness. Though no character in The Bluest Eye achieves authenticity, the novel does suggest the values which its characters lack, and which might have allowed them to experience growth. Sula, on …

The beginning of the social season in the summer of 1968 at the Hollisbrook mansion in Ridgeport, New York, was marked by a graduation party for Doyle Hollisbrook, youngest of the small, eastern American family. The action of the play centers on the preparation for the party. Doyle, feeling his graduation lacks personal significance, plans extra honors and exaltations. Eavesdropping on his mother and sister, he learns his achievements are minimized. His response is to carry out his plan to hire actors to support his view that he is prince of Wales. This thesis is concerned with the problem of whether the melodic treatment in the motets of Tomas Luis de Victoria is in the Palestrina style. It was engendered by the fact that the melodic styles in the motets of these two composers sound so similar; and by the fact that several scholars disagree as to their stylistic affinities. The method used for this study was based on the research of Knud Jeppesen, who articulated seventy-nine stylistic principles governing the Palestrina melodic style. Can poetry "make new" the world? Ezra Pound thought so. In "Cantico del Sole" he said: "The thought of what America would be like/ If the Classics had a wide circulation/ Troubles me in my sleep" (Personae 183). He came to write an 815 page poem called The Cantos in which he presents "fragments" drawn from the literature and documents of the past in an attempt to build a new world, "a paradiso terreste" (The Cantos 802). This may be seen as either a noble gesture or sheer egotism.

The purpose of the study, was to determine the importance of identified duties to the career success of a newly hired design/drafting employee aspiring to become a supervisor or manager as perceived by design/drafting managers and university professors. An opinionnaire was developed which consisted of 141 tasks which were grouped into 13 general duties. The 13 duties represented the job functions for design/drafting managers. The opinionnaire was validated utilizing a jury of experts consisting of eight design/drafting managers and five university professors. It was then mailed to the membership of the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) who identified themselves as …

The paradox in Thomas Merton's life, that of being both poet and priest, has often been studied. Merton himself was torn by this paradox, the need to keep his vow of silence and the need to express himself through language. It is this paradox, the paradox of language and silence and how Merton resolves it in antipoetry, that is examined in this study. Antipoetry provides an answer to many paradoxes Merton finds in his life. This thesis is a development of my drawings and paintings during a 3-year period, from 1988 to 1991. I have sought a consistency in representing forms in an ambiguous space. Painting in a realistic mode has, for me, enhanced the sense of ambiguity. I have sought to discover different ways of presenting the union of objects and forms in a space that is both naturalistic and flat.
