Dance As A Cultural Element In Spain And Spanish America, Amy Lynn Wall

Two years ago I had the opportunity to live and travel in Spain. Because I participate in and enjoy international dance, I sought to identify the Spanish culture through dance. Throughout my literature review I continued this identification process by looking at the history of Spain, the functions of dance in the society, the regional variations in dance and traditional costume, the dance of the Roman Catholic Church of Spain, and finally the influence Spain has had on dance in Spanish America.

A Chaotic Approach To Free Will And Determinism, Gregory J. Till

This paper approaches this ancient problem by incorporating the new science of chaos. Chaos is the name given to the discovery that even "simple deterministic systems with only a few elements can generate random behavior" {Crutchfield et al., 46). Chaos shows that deterministic systems can act in ways which are not predictable while at the same time showing that many seemingly random phenomena are more explainable than once thought. By doing so, chaos alters the laws of causation upon which much of this debate rests and indicates that perhaps not all theory is against freedom of the will, despite Dr. …

The Portrayal Of Interracial Families In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction Books, Judy Mitchell

The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of children's and young adult fiction books which portray contemporary interracial families. A checklist was prepared to address how the structures of these families are being presented. Three hypotheses were rejected. The first hypothesis stated that the majority of the interracial families portrayed would include on African American and one caucasian parent. The data showed that only forty-one percent of the families fit that criterion. The third hypothesis stated that the majority of interracial families would encourage their children to accept both sides of their heritage. The data, however, showed …

Adolescent Pregnancy Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, Mary K. Vaughn

The annotated bibliography contains a list of young adult fiction books in which the characters resolve an adolescent pregnancy situation. From the twenty-one books chosen for inclusion, twenty-three entries were made in the bibliography. Fourteen entries were found in the pregnancy resolution of keeping the child category, five entries ln the adoption category and four entries in the abortion category. The twenty-one books included in this study were published from 1973 through 1989 and were available in public or school libraries.

Our society perceives childhood as a time when children are happy and carefree, learning and growing. For many children, however, childhood is not carefree. In the national school population, 1.2 to 2.0 percent of the students are behavior disordered (Haring, 1987). "Behavior disorders" is used as a term rather than "emotional disabilities" because the State of Iowa has mandated the use of the former term.
This research focuses on the ways in which children's literature portrays the behavior-disordered child. Books with accurate descriptions of the behavior-disordered condition in children help adults and other children understand the disorders.

This thesis is a response to Aldo Leopold's 1949 call for a new, wholistic environmental ethic. Leopold's call stemmed from his concern over the increasing degradation of the environment as a result of a utilitarian approach which judges nature as good only insofar as it is good for human economic and recreational benefit. This thesis is aimed at the development of a wholistic, non-utilitarian environmental ethic grounded in the philosophy. of Immanuel Kant. Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke

After reviewing the criticism on Pulitzer Prize winning American author Annie Dillard's writing, I offer a close analysis of the imagery in these of Dillard's early works: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974), Holy the Firm (1977), and Teaching a Stone to Talk (1982). The analysis reveals how Dillard employs oppositions to expose the contradictions inherent in nature and, therefore, in God. Each of the three chapters covers one volume. In Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard's spiritual quest manifests itself in a study of nature. For Dillard, learning to see requires being prepared for visions of violence and horror as well …

This abstract is based on my October 24, 1992 recital given at the Hearst Center for the Arts. The accompanist 1. was Svetlana Gabruk, a University of Northern Iowa Master of Music candidate and student of Dr. Joyce Gault. The recital opened with a set of five short songs from Claudio Monteverdi's Scherzi Musicali printed in 1632 by Bartholomeo Magni. Monteverdi composed at a time when solo songs were very popular, but he himself wrote very few. Even though his solo songs are not characteristic examples of his style, they do display Monteverdi's use of contrasting textures, dramatic expression and …
