In January of 1975, Iowa Democratic Party activists and office holders could not have been happier. In the previous November's mid-term elections, Iowans had elected or reelected five of the six Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, including newcomers Michael Blouin, Berkley Bedell, and Tom Harkin. In addition, Democrats now controlled both branches of the state legislature. About the only thing for the state's Democrats to be unhappy about was the situation in the Iowa Executive Council, where the GOP controlled all seven offices (including that of governor). Within the context of discussions regarding the Constitution and its forming, great emphasis is given to the history of the ideas which influenced and/or became a part of that document. The general term given to the line of thought of which our Constitution is a part is "natural law" theory, referring to the rights which the founding fathers, or natural law theorists in general, deemed so basic as to be understood. The purpose of this study was to examine how seventh grade students responded to the oral reading of The Jazz Man (Weik). The researcher attended the four seventh grade language arts' classes in the Marion Independent School District, Marion, Iowa, and the twelve seventh grade language arts' classes in the Linn-Mar Community School District, Marion, Iowa, to read to and question the students. Students identified the adults with whom they live at home (their family structure) and then answered the question, "What do you think happened to Zeke (the main character in the story)?" 167 kindergarten, first and second graders at Garfield Elementary School in Boone, Iowa, and 470 first reader books were used to investigate whether justification can be given to shelving first reader books in a separate section. An increase in the number of charges of first reader books might demonstrate a need of students to have this type of material readily accessible.

The study was conducted over two 45 day cycles. During the first cycle, first reader books were identified, marked with a red dot and interfiled with picture books. A first reader section was created for the second cycle. All …

The first group of pieces on the recital is a pair of sonatas, K.148 and K.149 by Domenico Scarlatti. Domenico Scarlatti wrote approximately 555 sonatas and composed 328 of them are in pairs. The sonatas in these pairs were intended to be performed together. He also composed groupings of 3 sonatas. Scarlatti used Italian terms such as "allegro," "presto," etc., for his sonatas, but they do not tell us much about tempo. The words are more indicative of the rhythmic character and mood of the pieces. Although D. Scarlatti was a great virtuoso, consideration in performing his music must include …

The content of my graduate choral conducting recital was Missa Brevis, K 259, the "Organ Solo Mass," in C major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and was performed by the University of Northern Iowa Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra. The mass was performed second on the program, following three settings of the Salve Regina text from the Catholic liturgy, a plainchant, a four voice motet by Orlando di Lasso and a setting in G minor by Franz Joseph Haydn, conducted by Dr. Bruce Chamberlain.

The purpose of this study was to determine if use of transformational verbal imagery rehearsal methods, when compared to use of methods based on verbal explanation, resulted in (a) higher levels of expressive performance by wind quintets and (b) greater appreciation of the composition by quintet members.

The study used a posttest-only control-group design. Thirty high school brass and/or woodwind quintets were randomly assigned to experimental groups (n = 15) or control groups (n = 15). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of literal and visual journaling on students' thoughts about artistic production. Participants were 40 sixth grade students enrolled in a private school program in the Midwest and two selected professional artists who used literal journaling to develop visual imagery. The theoretical frame drew upon Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (Gardner, 1983). The methodology relied on Borg and Gall's ( 1983) discussion of qualitative research design, Bradburn and Sudman's qualitative research methodology (1982), and Oppenheim's (1966) questionnaire design. Assisting on the recital were the University of Northern Iowa Chamber Winds and Janeen Jenson, soprano, Mary Ann Fountain, mezzo-soprano, Sean Murphy, tenor, and Thomas Alpers, baritone. This study evaluated the effectiveness of Channel One programming in the Denver, Iowa, Secondary School. The seventh grade class was divided into three groups for the study. One group was selected as a control group and did not view Channel One. The other two groups viewed the programming daily. One of the two groups that viewed the programming also participated in brief follow-up discussions each day. Weekly current events quizzes were administered covering news stories from both Channel One programming and from other common news sources.
