"The term 'pattern' necessarily implies a design composed of one or more devices, multiplied and arranged in orderly sequence. A single device, however complicated or complete in itself it may be, is not a pattern, but a unit with which the designer, working according to some definite plan of action, may compose a pattern." This study examines the relation between the quest for identity-formation that characterized the Harlem Renaissance and the treatment of Voice by the women writers of the period to define their feminine identity. The concept of voice as used in this study refers to the method of self-expression and self-articulation to define the feminine subject by the women writers of the period. The importance of the Harlem Renaissance as a period of black self-determination is the main principle that is used here to particularize the feminine quest. Britain’S Only Offensive: An Assessment Of The Influence Of Bomber Command On British Morale, 1939-1942, Brian Keith Gulick

The assumptions historians make regarding their subjects can prove weak. This study considers one assumption made by historians studying the British bombing offensive against Germany during the first three years of World War II. Scholars, in their attempts to justify an expensive, dangerous and morally questionable strategic attack against Germany, have related the first three years of the air war to British home front morale. They make general statements linking the bombing of Germany to the status of home morale, concluding that the offensive boosted British spirits. However, no real evidence has been presented to either support or deny this …

Graduate Recital In Voice: Song Cycles By Robert Schumann And Benjamin Britten, Jeffrey J. Brich

On Saturday, April 17, 1993, Jeffrey Brich, tenor, presented a recital in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music degree. The recital, approximately one hour in length, consisted of two song cycles. The first cycle performed was Dichterliebe (1840) by Robert Schumann, which contains sixteen songs set to poetry from Heinrich Heine's poetic cycle, Lyrisches Intermezzo. Following an intermission, the recital resumed with a performance of Britten's Serenade, Op. 31 (1943). Originally composed for tenor, horn and strings, the soloist opted to use Britten's piano reduction of the string accompaniment for this performance of the work.

This document will discuss four examples of Classic Era wind composition, known as Harmoniemusik, and their performance on a Graduate Conducting recital in March, 1991 at the University of 1 Northern Iowa. This recital was presented as a part of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Conducting. The history of Harmoniemusik and its medium, the wind octet, will be presented, describing its function, popularity, and patronage. This thesis exhibition is a culmination, a gathering, of my beginnings as an artist as well as the evidence of the chaos of creative growth. It is an attempt to show the fullness and depth that I have experienced in the making of these works. When I began to paint I was one of many who intuitively or by some practical reasons had chosen art as an area in which to work and to make a living. At that time I imagined art as something extra-ordinary, beautiful, always interesting and exciting--as some sort of holiday or celebration.
