Five monthly booktalk programs were presented to the eighth grade reading classes at BGM School. Circulation statistics for first semester of 1992 when these students were in seventh grade were compared to the circulation statistics for the same semester of their eighth grade year in 1993 to determine if the booktalks made a significant difference in this group's reading habits.
An analysis of the data using the chi-square test indicated no significant difference at the .05 level in the circulation statistics for paperback books, hard bound books or total volumes. It seemed, though, that the students reacted positively to the …

This research investigated the occurences of stereotyping of Native Americans in young adult literature, using the young adult novels available in the Monticello, Iowa, Jr./Sr. High School. Twenty-eight Native American fiction books were read and evaluated. Of the twenty-eight books read twenty-three had 3 or more stereotypes.

The views expressed about the life of Mary Queen of Scots from the sixteenth century onwards by poets, dramatists, and historians have created a legend around her. These views will be compared and contrasted in this paper. The works selected for this paper reflect both ends of the spectrum: Mary as a political figure ("queen") or as a romantic figure ("woman"). The purposes of the first chapter are to introduce Mary Stuart and provide a historical context for specific episodes in her life. The intent of this recital was to give the listener an opportunity to hear music that otherwise may not be available due to lack of performance or recordings. All of the compositions were written in the twentieth century and include Stan Friedman's Solus (1975), Chamber Music VII: Ceremonies for Trumpet and Piano (1984) by Robert Suderburg, the Caprice (1972) of Joseph Turrin, Five Poems of Emily Dickinson for Trumpet and Narrator (1978) by Jay Rizzetto, and three pieces by Dimitri Shostakovich-Romance from Ballet Suite no. 2 (1951) and two of his Three Fantastic Dances (1922). Art critic Donald Kuspit proposes for the future an art which is symbolic spiritual art, a communicative extension of silent painting, it must dramatize (respiritualize, revitalize) the forms it uses to make them spiritually convincing. It does this by fusing their eternal character with a worldly content that is shown to have mystical import, inner meaning. This interaction and reconciliation generates spiritual atmosphere. During the depression years of the late 1920s and 1930s, Muscatine, Iowa's Norman Baker stood as both a powerful and controversial figure in rural eastern Iowa. Baker's successful business empire, which at its height included a radio station, mail order enterprise, newspaper, magazine, and a cancer quackery hospital, earned the Muscatine tycoon millions of dollars in revenue over the course of a decade. Despite this business success, Baker's brash personality, vituperative broadcasting style, and fraudulent medical claims were subjects of constant controversy.

Thomas Alpers, baritone, presented a Graduate Recital on November 16, 1994 at 6:00 p.m. in Russell Hall Auditorium in partial fulfillment of the degree Master of Music in Performance. Assisting on the recital was Marleta Matheson, pianist. This abstract discusses the ideas and musical focus of the recital pieces. Earth and Air and Rain was completed by Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) in 1932 and was originally composed for baritone and piano to poems by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). Finzi used many of Hardy's poems for his vocal music including another cycle, Before and After Summer. The set performed represents Finzi's first unified …

The purpose of this study was to decide if the current examples of baseball and basketball novels for young adults have a high degree of accuracy. Content analysis was used to determine this accuracy. Description, rules and techniques characteristics and problems and concerns characteristics were developed and listed on a checklist. Fifteen novels on baseball and basketball were read and analyzed using the checklist. All hypotheses were accepted. The fifteen novels all had a majority of "yes" checks in both descriptions, rules and in techniques and problems and concerns categories. The purpose of the study was to investigate preference among kindergarten and second grade children's selection of picture books. The study was conducted with a bi-racial student population of kindergarten and second grade students. The students were given free choice selection of white character books and black character books. Results indicated a difference between kindergarten and second grade students. Kindergarten children significantly preferred books of like-race characters. In second grade, there was no significant difference in the preference of books. The combined data of kindergarten and second grade showed a significant difference in the preference of books.
