Artist Statement
I created this drawing for my Drawing I class, where I was introduced to the cross-hatching method. Through this technique, I aimed to physicalize emotion through the beauty and expressiveness of the human hand. The title, A Handful, represents not only the literal handful of hands shown, but also the handful of emotions and experiences behind each one.
Latticed Stinkhorn, Emilee G. Seigworth
Latticed Stinkhorn, Emilee G. Seigworth
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement
Latticed Stinkhorn is a watercolor piece originally created for the special gallery of the 2023 Scientific Illustration course at the University of North Florida. It was inspired by my enduring fascination with the world of fungi, particularly specimens of the family Phallaceae. This watercolor piece offers a simple perspective of Clathrus ruber, a species commonly referred to as Latticed Stinkhorn. Like many members of the family, the reproductive fruiting body first surfaces encased in a cream-colored soft shell with a texture comparable to a leathery reptile egg. As the body ages, the initial shell disintegrates to reveal a …

Water Stories: A River Harvest, Christine Hoang-Dung Vu
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Artist Statement Water Stories, a digital art piece, was one of the artworks shown in the 2024 River Reflection exhibition. This was created by gathering inspiration from the producers, cast, and the vision of preserving places and people through stories that are connected to nature and how it impacts its community. This is also part of the multidimensional performance project with the help of producers, Dr. Tru Leverette Hall and Dr. Maureen McCluskey. By being exposed in the River Reflection exhibition, people will be able to understand the artwork and spread the news of not only preserving the environment, but …

From The Earth, Ezra Welborn
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Composer’s Note
This original musical piece was created as part of Water Stories: A River Harvest, under faculty direction of Dr. McCluskey and Dr. Leverette Hall, which utilizes key elements of storytelling blended with environmental justice. One main visionary facet is how the arts and water connect people and link communities, specifically along the Ribault River. To ensure alignment, style preferences, sound movements, tone, and timbre were discussed with Dr. McCluskey and choreographer Rayanna Campbell. After on-site visits to Ribault River Preserve Park and Eartha’s Farm and Market, this musical soundscape was produced, which serves the Water Stories vision and …

The Leftovers, Jessie M. Roncevic
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Though our species is relatively young on the world time scale, we have drastically reshaped our planet and impacted many other species. Our latest advancements in AI technology could revolutionize entire industries, the environment, and society more than any other human invention. While this new technology could transform human society for the better, some have expressed anxieties over the rapid rise of an unregulated industry whose consequences on the social, political, environmental, and economic systems are difficult to predict. The impacts of advancing artifical intelligence (AI) and artificial general intelligence (AGI) technology are difficult to imagine, even for those at …
Reporting On Racial Violence: A Content Analysis Of Local & National Coverage Of Jacksonville, Florida’S Dollar General Shooting, Carter Mudgett
Reporting On Racial Violence: A Content Analysis Of Local & National Coverage Of Jacksonville, Florida’S Dollar General Shooting, Carter Mudgett
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
This study investigates how local and national news media outlets — particularly the Associated Press, CNN, the Florida Times-Union, and News4Jax — presented the “Dollar General Shooting” in Jacksonville, Florida on and after August 26, 2023. Far-reaching expectations for journalists call for “objective” observation and reporting, an ideal that is nearly impossible given that collective and individual experience inform perceptions and understandings. Nonetheless, the original definition of objectivity — as described by Kovach and Rosenstiel (2014, p. 10) — outlined a transparent approach to evidence, a process to remove personal bias from reporting, with the goal of a stronger journalistic …

Chinese Piracy In The Late 18th And Early 19th Centuries And Its Contribution To The Fall Of The Qing Empire, Benjamin J E Smith
Chinese Piracy In The Late 18th And Early 19th Centuries And Its Contribution To The Fall Of The Qing Empire, Benjamin J E Smith
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Abstract
In the decades before the First Opium War, Qing China faced many internal and external crises. One of the least studied of these crises is that of pirate risings. Although pirates have always existed in the Asian world, between 1790 and 1810, pirate groups organized themselves into a cohesive confederation that openly opposed Qing authorities. These pirates represented a significant threat to the stability of China in the early 19th century. Not only did they cause severe damage to the Qing navy, but they had a major negative impact on the Jiaqing’s outlook on his mandate. This paper will …
The History Behind El Silbón: Exploring Historical And Psychological Elements To The Urban Legend, Valentina S. Bonilla
The History Behind El Silbón: Exploring Historical And Psychological Elements To The Urban Legend, Valentina S. Bonilla
PANDION: The Osprey Journal of Research and Ideas
Abstract
The urban legend of El Silbón has been present in Venezuelan folklore for centuries. Even though the story is predominantly regarded as a ghost story to scare children, it hides many elements from the historical context of when it started to be popularized around the country. With a beginning in Los Llanos (The Plains) of Venezuela, El Silbón reflects the effect that factors such as the Independence War and economic disparity had on the population and exemplifies the purpose of Oral Tradition of sharing communal experiences and values with the future generations.

Using Vr And Ar To Create Immersive Experiences That Document Local History And Culture, Susan Swiatosz, Beryl White-Bing, Kevin Pfeil
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
In 2023 the Virtual Learning Librarian at the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Thomas G. Carpenter Library approached the Head of Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) with the idea to create a virtual reality (VR) experience using one of SCUA’s most accessed special collections: the Eartha M. M. White Collection. She was inspired by several existing VR experiences such as The Book of Distance and The People’s House: Inside the White House with Barack and Michelle Obama. She was also stimulated by the challenge set by the Head of SCUA to figure out a collaborative project with Special Collections. …
