Marking Their Sacrifice: Headstones And History For Usct Veterans In Jacksonville, Florida, Christian Merkley
Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize
The project’s aim is to consolidate military and pension records to identify and honor United States Colored Troops (USCT) by providing them headstones for their unmarked graves.
These soldiers fought for the Union in the Civil War in 1863 and 1864. They were almost always denied pensions during their lifetimes. One notable case is William Johnson, who was denied five times, only for his family to receive the pension posthumously.
We are working to establish a memorial site on the Jacksonville University campus. Currently, our main goal is to secure military headstones for these soldiers, many of whom were buried …

Polynomial Invariants For Classical Invariant Groups, John Diller
Polynomial Invariants For Classical Invariant Groups, John Diller
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The classical invariant theory of matrix groups plays a fundamental role in modern algebra and geometry, with origins in Hilbert’s Fourteenth Problem concerning the finite generation of rings of invariants. In this thesis, we study polynomial functions on spaces of matrices and investigate their invariants under natural actions of classical groups. After recalling the geometric and algebraic motivations behind Hilbert’s question, we focus on invariants for several complex Lie groups, including the general linear group GL(V), the symplectic group Sp(V), the orthogonal group O(V), and the special orthogonal group SO(V). Building on foundational work of Hermann Weyl and a modern …
Evidence For Explicitation: Working From Asl Into English, Campbell Mcdermid, Carrie Humphrey, Anita Harding
Evidence For Explicitation: Working From Asl Into English, Campbell Mcdermid, Carrie Humphrey, Anita Harding
Journal of Interpretation
A study was done to examine the explicitation and compression strategies used by interpreters working from American Sign Language (ASL) into spoken English. To date, most research has focused only on their work from English into ASL. A review of the literature identified several expansion and compression strategies that interpreters and translators utilize, and these served as a model of coding the data and for triangulation. The methodology for this study was qualitative and descriptive. Twenty-two interpreters volunteered to simultaneously interpret four ASL recorded texts into spoken English, for a total of 88 target texts. The researchers identified 9 expansions …
