At The Edge Of The Circle: Willa Cather And American Arts Communities, Andrew W. Jewell
At The Edge Of The Circle: Willa Cather And American Arts Communities, Andrew W. Jewell
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
During the pivotal years of Willa Cather's artistic development, she regularly engaged a variety of American arts communities that encouraged, challenged, and influenced her work and professional growth. Her interactions with these communities were an effort to locate a sustainable, meaningful relationship to her fellow artists. This dissertation explores her efforts by analyzing the character of the communities, chronicling Cather’s involvement within them, and interpreting the impact on Cather’s life and work.
After the Introduction, the chapters are organized to follow Cather as she experimented with various communal forms and developed her own relationship to the literary scene. Chapter one …

The John Jay Papers: Re-Envisioning A 20th-Century Editorial Project For A 21st-Century Audience, Mary Jo Kline
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
John Jay's papers have had a far more tortured history than they deserve-and more than seemed their destiny at his death in 1829. Then it seemed likely that his career and contributions would be studied as carefully and enthusiastically as any other Founding Father's-certainly as closely as his friends John Adams and Alexander Hamilton. His family's archive had survived the Revolution in war-torn Westchester County and New York City. His personal papers had successfully crossed the Atlantic when he returned from diplomatic missions abroad in 1784 and 1795. Jay's will placed those papers in the custody of his devoted family, …
National Origin, Alienage, And Loyalty, Denton L. Watson
National Origin, Alienage, And Loyalty, Denton L. Watson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
During World War II, Americans were consumed by fears over national security owing to the presence within our borders of a large alien population and citizens who were descendants of immigrants from countries that were then fighting against us. The Roosevelt administration's reaction to the hysteria over threats from "enemy aliens" are a sobering lesson for the nation, especially given the response of the Bush administration to similar post-September 11 fears. These have led the administration to take even more drastic steps, ostensibly to protect our national security in its fight against terrorism, that specifically target Arabs and Muslims. Although …

May 17, 2004 marked the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Linda Brown (1943- ), a Topeka, Kansas third grader, is the symbol of "bringing down segregation" in U.S. schools. Rosa Parks (1913- ), "the mother of the Civil Rights Movement," refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus on December 1, 1955. Coretta Scott King (1927- ) has created the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change as a living memorial to her husband's life and dream. In January 1986, because of her efforts, she celebrated the first legal holiday …

Women School Superintendents: Perceptions Of Best Practices For Leadership, Susan Katz
Women School Superintendents: Perceptions Of Best Practices For Leadership, Susan Katz
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
In U.S. public schools, a limited number of women have attained the position of superintendent. Consequently, there has been limited research focusing on understanding the position from a woman's perspective. The purpose of this study was to add to the body of literature focusing on women's ideas and beliefs about leading schools.

Power Factors That Define Gender Inequity Within The Missouri Public School Superintendency, Kristina Alexander, Frank D. Grispino, Phillip E. Messner
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
Although women have access to the superintendency power position, evidence has shown that women have not been able to break the glass ceiling. A review of the literature failed to identify specific and practical employment factors that must be resolved or overcome if women are to reach power parity in Missouri. This study was undertaken to identify those variables that best define negotiating and access power barriers for Missouri women superintendents.

Although many aspiring, young women might believe the glass ceiling was shattered a decade ago, they still need to understand how that glass ceiling impacted an older generation of women in educational leadership. they also must be aware that some segments of the glass ceiling might still exist. This article provides a historical overview of the external barriers faced by women in educational leadership and presents mentoring recommendations to both generations.
Character Citizenship, Donald F. Uerling
Character Citizenship, Donald F. Uerling
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The thesis of this article is that public schools have both the legal authority and the educational responsibility to provide schooling for character and citizenship. We will begin with a review of constitutional principles expressed in selected Supreme Court cases; we will end with some observations about such schooling from an educational perspective.

A "Value-Added" Resource The Law Practice Of Abraham Lincoln: Complete Documentary Edition, Marty L. Benner
A "Value-Added" Resource The Law Practice Of Abraham Lincoln: Complete Documentary Edition, Marty L. Benner
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
When the editorial staff began designing The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln: Complete Documentary Edition (LPAL) in 1991, we intended it to become an electronic version of a microfilm edition-images of documents accessible through an electronic finding aid. l As we refined our conception of what the edition should look like, and as technological capabilities exploded in the 1990s, we saw many opportunities to add value to the edition. The fact that it was electronic made many of these ideas possible and relatively inexpensive. By the time we published LPAL, we had created not only the typical introduction to the …
Review Of American Literature And The Culture Of Reprinting And Forgotten Readers: Recovering The Lost History Of African American Literary Societies, Melissa J. Homestead
Review Of American Literature And The Culture Of Reprinting And Forgotten Readers: Recovering The Lost History Of African American Literary Societies, Melissa J. Homestead
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Both these volumes demonstrate the exciting potential, as well as the pitfalls, of applying history-of-the-book methodologies to American literary history in ways that complicate traditional author-centered paradigms. In American Literature and the Culture of Reprinting, Meredith McGill focuses on the logic that drove publishers, legislators, and readers to resist an author-driven copyright law for much of the nineteenth century, brilliantly overturning pieties about the “failure” of the law to do justice to authors and analyzing “unauthorized” reprinting as a system functional on its own terms, rather than criticizing it as dysfunctional in contrast to the later proprietary system imagined …
A Critical Reading And Revision Strategy: Glossing Arguments As Cultural Work, Deborah Minter, Amy M. Goodburn
A Critical Reading And Revision Strategy: Glossing Arguments As Cultural Work, Deborah Minter, Amy M. Goodburn
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Recently compositionists have focused on how writing functions both rhetorically and culturally in the public sphere. Amy Lee (2000), for example, frames her booklength discussion of college composition in an understanding that “writing serves as the means by which we actively construct a self and a world that are, in turn, determined by the very language we have access to” (pp. 45-46; see also Berlin, 1996; Ervin, 1999; Wells, 1996). Such a view places pressure on writing teachers to develop generative activities that extend students’ existing capacities to summarize and analyze arguments. One activity that we’ve found useful is glossing. …

Effects Of Accelerated Heat And Light Aging On Textiles Marked With Fabric Marking Pens, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews
Effects Of Accelerated Heat And Light Aging On Textiles Marked With Fabric Marking Pens, Janet Evenson, Patricia Cox Crews
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
Despite reasonable concerns that fabric marking pen inks may prove damaging over time, some quilters use them to temporarily mark quilting designs on quilt tops. Unfortunately, no published results concerning long-term effects of these products exist. The purpose of this study was to determine whether marking pen inks contribute to degradation or discoloration over time. Samples were marked with one of three brands of marking pen and subjected to ink removal treatments, followed by heat or light aging. Changes in color and breaking strength were measured before and after heat or light aging. Results showed that a water immersion ink …

Review Of Pamela E. Ritchie, Mary Of Guise In Scotland, 1548-1560: A Political Career, Carole Levin
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Mary of Guise, widow of James V of Scotland, is a fascinating woman, though one with a very different life than was portrayed in the 1998 film, Elizabeth. There are only two earlier studies of Mary of Guise, those by Rosalind Marshall (1 977) and Marianne McKerlie (1931). For those who wish to know more about this important political player, Ritchie's book is a welcome addition. As she points out, Mary of Guise is usually discussed only in connection with her daughter Mary Stewart, her French family, or the Reformation Rebellion of 1559-60. Ritchie provides a far more complete …

Improving Knit Fabric Upf Using Consumer Laundry Products: A Comparison Of Results Using Two Instruments, Jihyun Kim , Janis Stone , Patricia Crews , Mack Shelley Ii, Kathryn L. Hatch
Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design: Faculty Publications
This study investigated the use of two instruments to measure the ultraviolet protective factor (UPF) of T-shirt knit fabrics. After various laundering treatments, specimens were cut and UPF was measured from the wale, course, and bias directions with the ISO MET® UV-Meter and the Cary UV-Visible Spectrophotometer. Similar results were found between the two instruments and among repeated measures. Before UPF measurement, the shirt fabrics were repeatedly laundered using various household detergents and laundering additives commonly available to consumers. Statistically significant effects on the mean UPF values were found related to type of fabric, type of detergent/laundry additives, number of …
Traveling Stitches: Origins Of Fair Isle Knitting, Deborah Pulliam
Traveling Stitches: Origins Of Fair Isle Knitting, Deborah Pulliam
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
The beginnings and "invention" of knitting has long fascinated knitters and amateur historians. Only recently has it come to be studied seriously, and there is still much folklore and fantasy repeated and published as history.
This paper (and discussion) considers some of the best known and most popular stories about the origins of Shetland and Fair Isle knitting and compares those with more recent considerations of color patterning in northern Europe, especially in the Baltic states and eastern Europe.
Fair Isle color patterning has been explained for many years as having been inspired by a wreck of the Spanish Armada …

Getting Started: An Editor's Search For One Diarist's Place In History, Linda A. Fisher
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
My introduction to documentary editing differs from that of other scholarly editors. They are scholars who became editors; I am an editor who found a project in medical history. With an M.D. degree, I had written many articles on health issues and had edited a medical society journal.
In 1999, I began researching the manuscript of Joseph Mersman (1824-1892), an obscure man who was a whiskey rectifier. From 1847 to 1864, Mersman kept a diary and made entries in English, French, and German. His 300-page record, at the Missouri Historical Society, describes life in Cincinnati and St. Louis, including the …

Douglass Liaisons: The Female Correspondents Of Frederick Douglass, 1842-52, Leigh Fought
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
For the past twenty years, historians have recognized the role that '1' women played in the nineteenth-century abolitionist movement. Works by Gerda Lerner, Nancy Hewitt, jean Fagan Yellin, Clare Taylor, and Maria Diedrich, among others, have demonstrated that women spoke, organized, promoted, and wrote on behalf of the movement to end slavery. Yet, the published volumes of the Frederick Douglass Papers have obscured that fact. Although women supported and often saved Douglass throughout his career, their voices have been conspicuously absent from the seven volumes of the Douglass Papers. With the impending publication of the first correspondence volume, which covers the …
Autobiography By Proxy; Or, Pastiche As Prologue: Review Of Lincoln On Lincoln; Franklin On Franklin; Jefferson On Jefferson; Washington On Washington; Adams On Adams Edited By Paul M. Zall, James E. Guba
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Paul M. Zall, professor emeritus of English at California State University at Los Angeles and research scholar at the Huntington Library, has taken up Washington's invitation "to posterity to think & say what they please" by completing "autobiographies" left unfinished or never written by several preeminent Americans. He is perhaps best known as one of the editors, together with J. A. Leo Lemay, of the Center for Editions of American Authors' approved genetic text and subsequent critical edition of Franklin's Autobiography (Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, 1981; New York: Norton, 1986). The prolific Dr. Zall has also built upon his …
