The Carpet Bag Correspondence, Russell J. Desimone, Erik J. Chaput
Dorr Scholarship
In late December 1842 and early 1843 there appeared several newspaper articles in the Providence Journal under the caption of “The Carpet Bag” Correspondence. In all four letters were published in the local newspapers all claiming to be from the carpet bag. Two of the letters were written by Dutee J. Pearce of Newport to Thomas Dorr the leader of the suffrage movement in Rhode Island. The other two letters were written to Dorr by Dr. J.A. Brown and Louis Lapham. The second Pearce letter is interesting because it discusses giving the Black community a jury trial.

Located at 28 Cambridge Street in Boston, the African Masonic Hall served as the meeting place for the African Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and the African Humane Society. The former, the nation’s first black masonic lodge, was founded in 1775 to foster black unity, advocate for abolition, and fight colonization efforts through masonic fraternal tradition. Similarly, the African Humane Society, also called the African Society, was founded in 1796 and used similar fraternal practices to provide medical and funeral expenses for its members. Being African fraternal societies, both groups restricted their membership to black men. Located in Beacon Hill less …

Political Science Undergraduate Theses
The rise of right-wing populism in European politics has come along side an increased presence of female representation in political affairs. What aesthetic decisions are being made by far-right female populist politicians? How do moderate right and left-wing women politicians differ in their presentation styles from populist women? While right-wing politics have gained traction in Europe before, this time women are the face of many right-wing populist movement, even though much of the ideology is rooted in misogyny and the presence of strong, masculine figureheads. With women taking center stage within these right-wing movements that are historically masculine, understanding their …

Representations Of Queer Cowboys In History, Literature, And Film, Olivia Black
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
My senior thesis focuses on showing the existence and erasure of queerness in American cowboys. The first chapter uses two journals from two different cowboys as well as an article from a Denver newspaper to establish what being queer looked like to cowboys and how that queerness continued after the end of the Frontier. Chapter two focuses on interpretations of cowboys in literature using two fictional cowboy stories which included the queer aspects of cowboy life as well as autobiographical and fictional cowboy poetry that confirmed explicit homosexual activity and revealed a shift in public views on being queer. The …

Olivia Black ’25, History major
Faculty mentor: Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, History and Classics
My research focuses on how certain traits such as queerness in historical cowboys were erased from American popular culture yet found in journals of real cowboys and influential Western literature. This erasure contributed to an inaccurate view of American cowboys in order for the media about cowboys to be successful.

Unintended Consequences: Assessing The Impact Of Dobbs V Jackson (2022) On The Provision Of Maternal Healthcare In Cases Of Obstetric Emergencies In The United States, Lauren Carson
Women's & Gender Studies Student Scholarship
Lauren Carson ’25, Political Science, Health Policy and Management, and Women’s and Gender Studies major
Faculty mentor: Dr. Abigail Brooks, Women’s and Gender Studies
The goal of this project is to assess the impact of the Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) decision on the provision of maternal healthcare in the United States. Since the decision, many healthcare providers across the political spectrum and from a diversity of backgrounds have spoken out about state level restrictions on care, particularly in instances of obstetric emergencies. This project utilizes two case studies, Idaho and Texas, to analyze correlations between highly restrictive …
