An 1842 reprint containing two reports detailing the events surrounding the 1834 mob destruction of the Ursuline Convent in Charlestown, MA. The first report discusses the public responsibility and duty of the State to protect its citizens and their property, regardless of social or religious affiliation, from unjust actions. The second report, produced by a select committee of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, discusses the merits of a petition for the Commonwealth to indemnify the Sisters of the Ursuline Order for their loss. The French Gazette is an English translation of the Gazette Françoise, the French newspaper published in Newport, RI by the French fleet that brought the Count de Rochambeau and 5800 French troops to America in July, 1780. The newspaper intended to translate various news items printed in American newspapers to keep the officers and men abreast of political events in this emerging nation. It is the first known service newspaper published by an expeditionary force. The French facsimile edition is also available elsewhere on this site.

An account of a civil suit, including witness testimony, of charges of assault and criminal conversation against the defendant for having unlawful martial relations with the plaintiff’s wife. The evidence presented during the trial suggests witness tampering took place on the part of the plaintiff, which resulted in a verdict for the defendant. Printed for J. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313–75), born in Certaldo, Tuscany, is best remembered today as the Father of Italian Prose owing to the immense popularity of his Decameron (c.1349–51), a collection of one hundred short stories (written in Italian prose) that are embedded in a narrative frame of a storytelling game undertaken by seven young women and three young men who fled Florence for Friesole in hopes of escaping the Black Death. During the Renaissance (1400–1600), however, Boccaccio was best remembered for his De casibus virorum illustrium [On the Downfalls of Famous Men] (c.1360). …

At the Abbey of Saint Denis-en-France, the Benedictine monk and chronicler Guillaume de Nangis (d. 1300) wrote a Latin World Chronicle from Creation to AD 1300. The text contains an account of the reign of King Arthur of Britain that includes the celebrated Sword in the Stone Episode. This iconic scene was not traditionally part of the ‘historical’ account of King Arthur’s biography. The pseudo-historical Brut chronicle story of King Arthur, which originates with Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britanniae [History of the Kings of Britain] (c. 1136), has Arthur, aged …

A 13^th century manuscript preserved by the nuns of Monte Mario, Rome, who claim the breviary was a gift from Jordan of Saxony to the Blessed Diana d’Andalo as a remembrance of St. Dominic.

The Blessed Diana d’Andalò (1201–1236), was the Dominican nun who founded a convent for her order dedicated to Saint Agnes in Italy. There is some question as to the claim however. According to Father William R. Bonniwell, O.P., who obtained this photocopy of the breviary, the handwriting style stems from the middle of the 13^th century.
