Themes Of Sexualization, Racialization, And Intersectional Objectification In University “Crush Pages” On Twitter, Mackenzie Kibbe

My research assesses textual information from four universities’ “crush pages” on Twitter, a widely used social media website. Furthermore, I conducted focus groups to record and analyze university students’ reactions to and experiences with crush pages. A crush is defined as “a strong feeling of romantic love for someone that is usually not expressed and does not last a long time” (“Crush,” n.d.). Crush pages allow Twitter users to anonymously submit a “tweet” – or status update consisting of 140 characters or less – about a person they have a crush on, and a moderator then posts this tweet on …

As Grand Valley State University (GVSU) was built and expanded in Allendale, Michigan, the negative impacts of the campus stormwater discharge on the ravines also grew. It was not until the early 2000’s that GVSU began to understand the impacts stormwater had on the ravines. In 2011, 32 acres of stormwater drainage from the west side of campus was diverted to a series of constructed wetlands. Health systems throughout the world may have a profoundly different, or extremely similar structure. A well-known, industrialized nation, the United States has an unusual system, which Shi and Singh (2008) describe as “unnecessarily fragmented” (p. 2). Highly unusual for a developed country, this system does not guarantee access to medical care for all of its citizens. The American marten (Martes americana) is a small carnivorous forest mammal with a long, slender body found throughout northern North America. Our study focused on home range size and habitat use of individuals in the Manistee National Forest in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. Marten home range sizes vary from animal to animal, as population density, climate, and food availability are all factors to consider (Smith et al. 2002). Our understanding of wildlife habitat use and selection, and therefore our efforts to create or manage suitable habitat are based almost exclusively on research conducted using very high frequency (VHF)-based radio telemetry. Like many multipurpose auditoriums, the Louis Armstrong Theatre (LAT) at Grand Valley State University has been reported by a considerable number of students and faculty to have unsatisfactory acoustics for music performance. This study focused on physical measurements and simulated changes to LAT. Reverberation time (RT) was measured by filling LAT with sound and measuring the decay for select frequencies as per ASTM E2235 protocol, and the initial time delay gap (ITDG) was determined using slapsticks as an impulsive sound source. A model of LAT was also constructed from blueprints and physical measurements; simulations using this model were conducted using …

ABSTRACT: Edgar Selwyn’s Men Must Fight (1933) is an obscure yet culturally relevant science fiction drama. An atypical film from its era, the movie has an unusual subject for a Classical Hollywood film- gender socialization. The film didactically argues that wars are inevitable because men are inherently violent, and that, conversely, world peace world occur if women were in power, a possibility that appears to be regrettably impossible. In “Ideology, Genre, Auteur,” Robin Wood says that by approaching film through the framework of ideological theory, we can become sensitized to “the opposing pulls, the tensions, of one’s world (593).” Even in a film that is not explicitly political, these tensions can find expression. As film historian Joseph McBride noted, “(n)o other American artist confronted the key events of the first decade of the century with such sustained and ambitious treatment” (450). Together, Spielberg’s War of the Worlds (2005), Munich (2005), and Minority Report (2002) create an informal trilogy, each exploring a different facet of American shock and anxiety in the War on Terror era.

Central focus

The central focus of this thesis is to examine the historical and sociopolitical roots of famine. In examining the root causes of famine, we can more carefully analyze its effects on the human condition. More specifically, in analyzing the pathologies associated with food deprivation and malnutrition at an early age, we can examine the possible long-term consequences of malnutrition on human health. In doing so, we can apply this understanding to the current crisis in South Sudan, to consider the implications that the current political situation presents for future generations of South Sudanese people.

The Great War was a highly traumatic event that rocked the Western world and beyond and had a tremendous effect on the professional lives of those who served in the conflict. Included among those profoundly changed by the experience of the war was George Grosz, whose art grew increasingly subversive in light of the horrors of what he had seen both on the battlefield and in the tumultuous political atmosphere of post-war Germany. This paper argues that officials at the Paris Peace Conference, in the White House, and in the U.S. Congress strove for the realization of competing visions for the international order following World War I, and thus were required to construct their own interpretations of how the conflict should be remembered and what must be learned from it. A pervasive sense of victors’ justice dominated the proceedings in Paris, leading to the creation of a settlement which would find lasting support from neither European nor American decision makers.
