Think Again: The Decision Making Process In King Lear And Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres, Elizabeth Burgess

This thesis is a feminist reading of Shakespeare‟s King Lear and Jane Smiley‟s Pulitzer Prize winning novel A Thousand Acres that applies psychological insights into human behavior to explain economic decision-making. Many of the traditional readings of King Lear, including the works of critics A. C. Bradley, Maynard Mack and Stephen Greenblatt, approach the play by accepting the patriarchal view of Lear as the rightful ruler, while Goneril and Regan are wicked for taking the kingdom from their father. Smiley‟s A Thousand Acres, however, approaches the text from what she imagines Goneril‟s perspective to be and includes the …

The twentieth century American evangelical Church co-opted many of its values from the surrounding American culture, among them, the tremendous importance it placed on individualism and self-sufficiency. The work of British Christian writer Charles Williams, though, provides a corrective, emphasizing the role of community in the salvation of one’s soul. This thesis provides a reading of three of Charles Williams’ last works—The Region of the Summer Stars, Descent into Hell, and All Hallows’ Eve—and examines the function of community in his work. In an essay titled “Film and Reality” formative film theorist Rudolph Arnheim poses a list of "limitations" that a film must adhere to in order to be considered art. "Formalism Exemplified in The Wolf of Wall Street" uses the lens of formative theory to examine Martin Scorsese's sprawling 2013 masterpiece to determine whether or not the film adheres to Arnheim's theory and can be considered film art.

Egyptian Film And Feminism: Egypt’S View Of Women Through Cinema, Wesley D. Buskirk

This essay analyzes the history of Egyptian film in relationship to the common perception of women in Egypt. From the early stages of Egyptian cinema, women assumed leadership positions, helping build the undeveloped industry to its height in the mid-1900's. An increasingly state-led and male-dominated film industry, however, adopted women as a symbol of nationalism, while neglecting them as equals through traditionalist film content. Furthermore, in the last quarter of the 20th century, governmental influences resulted in a shortage of production resources. That’S Why I’M Lonely: Ideology Of The Absurd, Jeremy D. Knickerbocker

Ideological film theory is enjoying somewhat of a resurgence in contemporary film criticism. Most notably, filmmaker Sophie Fiennes' recent collaborations with Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, The Pervert's Guide to Cinema (2006) and The Pervert's Guide to Ideology (2012). In this essay I attempt to grapple with Harmony Korine's delightfully enigmatic and underrated masterpiece Mister Lonely (2007) through the methodological lens of Ideological film theory. I doing so, I seek to provide insights on the complex nature of ideological categories and the necessity of a more nuanced approach to ideological analysis.

Contemporary global events of the War on Terror, the War on ISIS, and the United States contentious relationship with Muslim societies make it crucial to teach about Islam and Muslims in school. However, negative representations of Islam and Muslims often impede this process. Overcoming these challenges is critical for the development of compassionate and informed students who are capable of thinking critically in a complex and globalized world. This article shows the importance of addressing Muslim representation in the media, debunks myths about Islam and Muslims, and provides concrete classroom recommendations for teachers.

Photography Senior Thesis Projects
This series is a contemporary interpretation of post-mortem photography, depicting the relationship between the physical and metaphysical remnants of life. The scenes are absent of a resident, showing only what remains, while the fabric portraits represent the ethereal vestige, the intangible memory friends and family hold on to. The corresponding paper reviews my photographic journey and details my processes necessary to create this body of work. Death is not always an easy subject to confront; with this project, I ask viewers to examine their own mortality and accept death’s inevitability.

The Depiction Of The Holocaust Within The Theme Of Escape In Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier & Clay, Deirdre Toeller-Novak

Escape sounds like a ram’s horn throughout Michael Chabon’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, looming large in the lives of his mostly Jewish characters. Only one, Josef Kavalier, is intimately tied to and escapes the Holocaust which destroys his entire family. The horrors of the Holocaust, however, cast a shadow that hovers over nearly every chapter of Chabon’s 636-page novel. For most of the novel’s other characters, intent on plotting their own escapes, the events of the Holocaust remain 4,000 miles away.
