Can I Have A Look?: A Formal Analysis Of Hitchcock And The Art Of Suspense In "Rear Window", Kevin S. Brennan

The legendary director Alfred Hitchcock has one goal, to make audiences squirm at the edges of their seats. Rear Window, one of his most critically acclaimed, studied and, according to Hitchcock himself, cinematic films. The way he shot this film and used the tools in his cinematic tool belt all enhance the suspense of his masterpiece. His use of sound, camera movement, scene set-up, actors, writing and more all come together to create a supreme work of suspense.

Creators and artists involve themselves in the passion and process of art as a way to discover what it is to be human. Such a notion has been central to my experiences at Grand Valley, growing as a student, as a performer, and as an individual. This recital aims to address four primary feelings (love, sadness, longing, and passion) that remind each of us what it is to be human. The pieces featured in this recital will explore a range of interpretations based on each emotion, depicting the multi-faceted and personal experience of feeling. A dramatized telling of the story of Tatyana Markus, a young Jewish resistance fighter from Kiev, Ukraine. Under a false identity, she personally killed dozens of Nazis during WWII. Along the way she lost many people she cared about until she was captured herself. Tatyana has gone on virtually unknown throughout the world, so this play is an effort to spread word about this brave, amazing girl who was only in her early 20s. One Peninsula, Many Spains: An Inquiry On Memory, Historiography, And The Legacy Of The Spanish Civil War From 1930 To The Present, Adrian Rios

In this essay, I analyze the events of the Spanish Civil War and their ramifications through the lens of cultural memory and historiography. I argue that ideas of memory are crucial to how societies and individuals understand history and that the Spanish Civil War had a tremendous impact on the Spanish people and significantly affected the memory not only of witnesses of the conflict, but to their descendants. This essay utilizes primary and secondary sources to understand the function of memory and varied responses to the Spanish Civil War. Hold Me, a film written and directed by Teace Snyder (2016) was distributed by email to palliative care clinicians and educators. The viewpoint presented here is not a review of this movie as a drama for entertainment. Rather it reviews the film to address the suggestion by its producers that it could serve as an adjunct to palliative care professional education.

Since the death of fascist dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, Spain has witnessed one of the greatest explosions in its real population in the nation’s history, brought about by extensive migrations from Africa and the Middle East. The increasing presence of immigrants, particularly from predominantly Muslim-countries, has forced Spain to reflect on its own idiosyncratic past of coexistence and violent exclusion between Catholics and Muslims. This exposition investigates how Spain’s unique history has produced a confusing atmosphere for Muslim migrants, who profess a deep kinship towards the country, but who are systematically marginalized by Spanish immigration law.

Not Written In Letters Of Blood: The Forgotten Legacy Of The Army Of The Cumberland, Andrew R. Perkins

While the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Tennessee have each rightly earned their spots in the annals of Civil War history, the Army of the Cumberland has fallen through the cracks into unfortunate neglect and undue malice, despite the large number of successes and triumphs achieved by its men. This paper advances four theories explaining why this has happened, including the timing of battles, conflict between Union generals, the failures of the army's commanders, and the unfortunate influence of Southern romanticism.
