The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz Jun 1955

The Bad Boll Enterprise 1948-1954, Hans Spalteholz

Master of Divinity Thesis

The thesis, however, does not deal with all the conferences which have been lumped together at times under the title of “Bad Boll.” This thesis limits itself to the free theological conferences which were held in Germany by the Missouri Synod primarily with Lutherans not in fellowship with the Missouri Synod, i.e., the Landeskirchen, the regional churches.

Arabic Cognates In The Hebrew Text Of Isaiah Chapters 40-66, Ernest Hahn Jun 1955

Arabic Cognates In The Hebrew Text Of Isaiah Chapters 40-66, Ernest Hahn

Bachelor of Divinity

The last twenty-seven chapters of Isaiah have been selected since they form a unified section designated by many scholars the so-called Second Isaiah. This essay by no means intends to deal with all the Arabic cognates of Hebrew vocables in this division. It only seeks those cognates which may shed additional light on the Hebrew, especially the Hebrew words which are of rare occurrence in the Old Testament.

Johann Von Staupitz : His Life, His Writings, His Influence Upon Luther, Martin W. Heinicke Jun 1955

Johann Von Staupitz : His Life, His Writings, His Influence Upon Luther, Martin W. Heinicke

Bachelor of Divinity

Before despair and doubt could completely wreck his mind and life, a new influence entered into his life - a person who was to bring about the new appreciation of God and His Son, Christ. Pointing him to the wounds of Christ and the love of God, taking his mind from the despairing and damning thoughts of predestination, giving him courage and advice when needed, and stimulating him in his search for truth and assurance, was Johann von Staupitz, the Vicar-General of the Augustinian Eremites of Germany, Luther's friend and spiritual father.

The Linguistic Problem Of The Pastoral Epistles, Norman C. Meyer Jun 1955

The Linguistic Problem Of The Pastoral Epistles, Norman C. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

We will restrict our study to the third of these problems: THE LINGUISTIC PROBLEM OF THE PASTORAL EPISTLES. This is the problem around which critics of our day are chiefly building their critical studies. Liberal and conservative scholars alike are most deeply impressed with this one phase of study.

Our purpose, therefore, is to make a study of this linguistic problem confronted in our Epistles and to state the conclusions of various scholars derived from their research into this single problem.

A Survey Of Judeo-Roman Relations, 162-4 B.C.A Survey Of Judeo-Roman Relations, 162-4 B.C., Paul L. Maier Jun 1955

A Survey Of Judeo-Roman Relations, 162-4 B.C.A Survey Of Judeo-Roman Relations, 162-4 B.C., Paul L. Maier

Bachelor of Divinity

In view of the nature of the sources, this study has been placed more in the context of Jewish than Roman history. .Judean domestic issues and eastern politics have been introduced only as a framework, however, in which to present the survey of Judeo-Roman relations.

Slightly more emphasis has been placed on the earlier period, 162 to 63 B. C., because less information is available on this epoch in contrast to the scholarship which has been directed toward the careers of' Herod and of his father.

The Care Of Souls As It Relates To Marriage Counseling, David H. Brammer Jun 1955

The Care Of Souls As It Relates To Marriage Counseling, David H. Brammer

Bachelor of Divinity

The minister's field in counseling is related to the pastoral office, and it is the scope of this paper to endeavor to show just why the function of marriage counseling fits into a pastor's total care of souls. Indeed, this thesis intends to show how necessary it is for the pastor to recognize the needs for his services in this field and, in an overview, how he can approach them in his counseling.

The Concept Of Life In The Psalms Of David, Richard O. Hoyer Jun 1955

The Concept Of Life In The Psalms Of David, Richard O. Hoyer

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to show, to some extent, the Old Testament faithful's answers to these questions. It seeks to give his concept of life, what life meant to him, why he thought he was living, and what goal he thought there was in life, and in doing so, to point out that the difference in outlook between him and the New Testament Christian is a difference of language created by a differing amount of revelation, and is not a difference in the fundamental concept of life itself.

John Wesley's Concept Of Santification, Robert Day Mcamis Jun 1955

John Wesley's Concept Of Santification, Robert Day Mcamis

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this thesis to set forth clearly and objectively the concept of sanctification as it was believed and taught by John Wesley. Concept is used to indicate thought or opinion or view. Sanctification is used in the narrow sense to mean the conduct of the Christian life or holiness of living which follows justification. This concept of sanctification will be limited to its doctrinal content and characteristics with a survey of influences which affected it in one way or another. No attempt is made to trace the social and political implications of this teaching, except in …

The Principals Of Christian Giving According To Second Corinthians Eight And Nine, Roland E. Grumm Jun 1955

The Principals Of Christian Giving According To Second Corinthians Eight And Nine, Roland E. Grumm

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is concerned with principles. Its purpose is to ascertain from Paul's dissertation what are the true guidelines for Christian giving. Drawing only from this source of stewardship teaching--the Apostle's exhortation in Second Corinthians--the basis for giving of our means to the Lord shall be established. This will entail a discussion of the "why," the reason that a Christian contributes, and the power that makes a Christian a cheerful giver. Thus the first principles will be set forth under the caption, "The Motives for Christian Giving." Included in this chapter will be a discussion of what the Apostle sets …

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos Jun 1955

The Spanish Erasmian Movement Of The Sixteenth Century, Hector Lazos

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to familiarize the readers, at least in part, with the Spanish Erasmian movement of the sixteenth century. Lutheran historical research has given much attention and study to the historical events of the sixteenth century. But when Lutheran historians study one of the movements of that century, they are prone to connect it with the German Lutheran Reformation. This might be because, as Lutherans, they are especially interested in seeing the influence that Luther and Lutheranism might have had on the religious conscience of other nations. For this reason the figure of Erasmus has been …

An Exploratory Study Of Anthroposophy, Everett Kalin Jun 1955

An Exploratory Study Of Anthroposophy, Everett Kalin

Bachelor of Divinity

As a way of' attaining knowledge and of developing man’s latent powers, Anthroposophy has some direct bearing on the Christian message. A Bachelor of Divinity thesis on the movement seems quite relevant, therefore. This thesis examines the life and teaching of Rudolf Steiner and the Anthroposophic movement which he started. It is an attempt to get a broad overview of Anthroposophy rather than concentrating on any one of its phases. It is an exploratory study of a preliminary nature, and in no measure does it try to be definitive on any part of the movement.

The Ethical Implications Of American Freemasonary, Andrew Simcak Jr Jun 1955

The Ethical Implications Of American Freemasonary, Andrew Simcak Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

This study endeavors to make visible the darkness permeating Masonry’s ethical teachings and to expose them what they really are—antichristian. The author attempts to lay bare the antichristian ethics of Freemasonry by comparing them with the Christian ethics. At the same time this study will, it is hoped, help the reader to discover and to realize the great gulf that separates the ethics of American Freemasonry from those of Christianity.

The New Commandment John 13:34, Earl P. Merz Jun 1955

The New Commandment John 13:34, Earl P. Merz

Bachelor of Divinity

The story is told of a visit that Bishop Ussher made to a certain Nobleman’s home. During the course of the evening meal the subject of religion was thoroughly discussed. One of the questions that, his host put to the Bishop was this: "How many commandments are there?" Without hesitation the bishop replied, "Eleven," and quoted, as an addition to the Decalogue, the passage in St. John’s Gospel that is to serve as the basis for this thesis: "A new commandment give I unto you, that ye love one another, as I have loved you, that ye also love one …

The Relationship Between The Baptism Of John And Christian Baptism, Walter E. Keller Jun 1955

The Relationship Between The Baptism Of John And Christian Baptism, Walter E. Keller

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is not written in answer to any current controversy on the subject. It grew rather out of a personal interest in the subject of baptism. Increasing interest in the topic led inevitably to the question of the relationship between Christian baptism and its prototype in John’s baptism. This thesis is a beginning in the direction of an answer to that question. The problem is, of course,, not an original one, for it has been the subject of much previous exegetical investigation.

Achieving Homiletical Skills And Techiques From Jesus' Use Of The Parable, Ronald Starenko Jun 1955

Achieving Homiletical Skills And Techiques From Jesus' Use Of The Parable, Ronald Starenko

Bachelor of Divinity

For the Christian preacher Jesus Christ the Lord is both the model and the message. Our purpose is concerned with Him as the model. Observation reveals that modern preaching is desperately in need of such a model. This thesis may serve to stimulate interest and provide thoughts and hints concerning the preaching skill of the Savior that will lead to public preaching akin to His.

The Brief Study Of The Double Edition Of St Cyprian's De Unitate Ecclesiae, Herbert John Bouman Jun 1955

The Brief Study Of The Double Edition Of St Cyprian's De Unitate Ecclesiae, Herbert John Bouman

Bachelor of Divinity

This study is occasioned by the fact that the fourth chapter of the treatise “De Unitate Ecclesias,” written by the Bishop of Carthage, St. Cyprian, about 251 A.D., has come down in two quite different forms. One version apparently bases the unity of the Church in explicit terms on the primacy of Peter over and above the authority of other bishops, while the other version speaks in more cautious and general terms of Peter as a symbol of unity and power in which all bishops share equally.

The Initial Cause Of Wycliffe's Break With The Church-Doctrinal, Moral, Political?, Dale G. Young Jun 1955

The Initial Cause Of Wycliffe's Break With The Church-Doctrinal, Moral, Political?, Dale G. Young

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the reason which made Wycliffe the historical figure that he became, namely, his break with the Roman Catholic Church. The problem, the writer feels, can be stated in terms still more specific than this. He has attempted to do just that with the formulation of the thesis title, “the initial cause of Wycliffe’s break with the church." Usually, three causes are ascribed to Wycliffe’s break with the Mother Church: political, doctrinal, and moral. That other causes could be nominated, such as home life, or personal desire for recognition or willingness to vindicate …

Thomas Aquinas' Concept Of The Word In His Contemporary On First Corinthians, Robert Scharlemann Jun 1955

Thomas Aquinas' Concept Of The Word In His Contemporary On First Corinthians, Robert Scharlemann

Bachelor of Divinity

Yet in the Thomistic synthesis, which has so strong an appeal as a philosophical structure, the Holy Scriptures are, according to Thomas, to be accorded the highest place. The question, therefore, a rises as to the exact manner in which the Scriptures take their place. Or, to put the question in a broader framework, in what manner does the Word of God, that is, the intelligible revelation of God, fit into the Thomistic structure? Is Thomas’ philosophical and theological structure really complete without that Word? That in a certain sense it is not complete without it is clear. Still in …
