The Relation Of Preaching And Life In Medieval England, Franklin W. Ritthamel Jun 1955

The Relation Of Preaching And Life In Medieval England, Franklin W. Ritthamel

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis is to look closer at the period of time which is called "Medieval"; however, there are numerous divisions of time given under that name. In this study, the time element will deal especially with the later medieval period, looking briefly at the times under Alfred the Great (ca. 900), and more closely at the time under the Normans, from 1066 on to immediately before the Reformation Century.

The Witness Of God With Special Reference To Hebrews 11:2, Paul Schuessler Jun 1955

The Witness Of God With Special Reference To Hebrews 11:2, Paul Schuessler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Since a study of the divine witness promises a clearer understanding of God and His ways and a more intensive penetration of Scripture, the following analysis of Hb 11:2 and a series of summarizing propositions are offered together with such philological and theological support as is available.

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder Jun 1955

That The Scriptures Might Be Fullfilled, Roy Schroeder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis we want to study the concept of .fulfilment as found in the New Testament. John Marsh points out the importance of this concept when he says: “To an age which has inherited the new and refined instruments of historical study which were developed in the nineteenth century., it has become very difficult to give any intellectual, as distinct from devotional or religious, context to the concept of ‘fulfilment’ as the Bible understands it.

The Reward Concept In The Synoptic Gospels, Robert Mayer Jun 1955

The Reward Concept In The Synoptic Gospels, Robert Mayer

The Soteriology Of The Lutheran Chorale Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Norbert Mueller Jun 1955

The Soteriology Of The Lutheran Chorale Of The Sixteenth And Seventeenth Centuries, Norbert Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There may be, and probably are, a variety of reasons why the chorale has not become popular in America. However, one of the more serious which has come to my attention, and I cannot say how wide spread this charge is, is that the chorale doesn’t contain enough Gospel if it contains Gospel at al1. The study which this paper embraces is a result of this charge.

Christian Love As A Loadstar And A Standard Of Judgment, Samuel Boda Jun 1955

Christian Love As A Loadstar And A Standard Of Judgment, Samuel Boda

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is to single out Christian Love ̆χγά τ̌?. as the only love worthy of the name and as that prescribed by God for young people and for people of all time. We shall contrast Christian Love with other so-called “loves” and show the distinctive differences between them. We shall, furthermore, demonstrate how Christian Love can and should be used by young people as a lodestar through all of life, as well as a standard of judgment, or test, for the solution of ethical problems and questions.

Tapeinophrosyne, Praytes, And Makrothymia In Paul's Theology- With Special Reference To Ephesians 4:1,2, Robert Elosser Jun 1955

Tapeinophrosyne, Praytes, And Makrothymia In Paul's Theology- With Special Reference To Ephesians 4:1,2, Robert Elosser

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Many have, indeed, described and defined humility, but they have not at all correctly defined the nature and characteristic of humility as it is set forth in Holy Scripture. The aim of this thesis, therefore, has been to set forth the Biblical teaching on humility, as far as possible, in harmony with the clear Word of God. Whatever value this thesis may have, therefore, will depend on the degree to which it has succeeded in realizing this aim.

The Unity Of The Church, Paul M. Bretscher May 1955

The Unity Of The Church, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

This is an anniversary year for the Lutheran Church. The Augsburg Confession, the foremost of our Lutheran symbols, came into existence 425 years ago. Prepared by Melanchthon and approved by Luther, it was read in German at the Diet of Augsburg on June 25, 1530. Copies of the German and Latin text were presented to Emperor Charles V. This 1530 version, known as the "unaltered" Augsburg Confession, has since that memorable day been the touchstone of what constitutes Lutheranism. It reflects in matchless form the deepest theological concerns of Luther, Melanchthon, and their colaborers. It served a threefold purpose: (1) …

Pietism And Traditional Worship Practices Of The Lutheran Church, Henry Dequin May 1955

Pietism And Traditional Worship Practices Of The Lutheran Church, Henry Dequin

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The Period of. Pietism, from approximately 1670 to approximately 1750, is one of the areas in the history or the Lutheran Church which has not received much consideration in the English language. Particularly is this true 1n regard to the effects of Pietism upon the traditional worship practice of the Lutheran Church. Aside from brief references which generally attribute considerable liturgical deterioration to the Pietistic Period, not much appears on this subject in the English language. Although there are more extensive studies of Pietism in the German language, yet; even here the details of the liturgical -- or; anti-liturgical -- …

Natural Science With Reference To Genesis 1, A. C. Rehwaldt May 1955

Natural Science With Reference To Genesis 1, A. C. Rehwaldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

A discussion of this problem has its pitfalls. There is danger of getting lost in a maze of conflicting opinions at the very start. The moment one turns to the Genesis account, the mind is flooded with associations coming from the outside. Besides, it calls for conscious effort to keep the mind from being swayed by one or the other of the many interpretations which have been presented. But if we seek a solution of some of the many problems which arise with respect to the relation of science and Genesis, we shall have to keep close to the text. …

Preaching From Isaiah., Richard R. Caemmerer May 1955

Preaching From Isaiah., Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching from Isaiah, the book by Professor John P. Milton of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn., was published by Augsburg Publishing House of Minneapolis in 1953 and was reviewed by the present writer in the CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL MONTHLY in the May issue of 1954 {pp. 407 f.). The purpose of this extended study is to stress the underlying principle of the work regarding the choice of sermon texts for the Sunday morning service, a principle which renders this book especially noteworthy and which is valid for many other areas of the Scriptures as a source for preaching texts.

Paul Writes To The Romans, W. F. Beck Apr 1955

Paul Writes To The Romans, W. F. Beck

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some Jews came to Rome in 161 B. C., when Judas Maccabaeus sent them as ambassadors in order to get Rome to help him fight for Jewish freedom against Antiochus of Syria. The Roman senate granted Judas a treaty of mutual defense and friendship. Other embassies sailed (like Paul two centuries later) over the Mediterranean to Rome. When they came home, they must have told their friends that Rome was a good place to live and to do business; for before a hundred years had passed, we find rich and influential Jews living in Rome. When Pompey captured Jerusalem in …

The Christian Hope, Herbert J. Bouman Apr 1955

The Christian Hope, Herbert J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

The general theme of the second assembly of the World Council of Churches at Evanston was "Christ, the Hope of the World." The theme of this essay is related to the message of Evanston. It bids us take note of the fact that we are to deal with the concept "hope" as qualified by the word "Christian." The world also has hope, or rather, hopes; for it has no single, well-defined aspiration. The hope of the world is materialistic, this worldly, earth-bound. But the hope of the world is illusory. It has no solid basis, no tangible object or goal. …

The Message Of Law And Gospel In The Old Testament, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer Apr 1955

The Message Of Law And Gospel In The Old Testament, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In considering God's grace we are constrained to look also in the Old Testament for Him who was to come from God as man's Savior and Redeemer. We shall not concern ourselves with the references that speak of the promised Messiah in general. Rather we shall take up primarily those passages which show how the demands of God were fulfilled in Him and how the judgments of God were executed upon Him who was to come. This leads us pre-eminently into a discussion of the "Servant poems" (Is. 42: 1-4; 49:1-6; 50:4-9; 52:13-53:12).

The Soteriolgical Aspect Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Trinity According To The Lutheran Confessions, Lewis W. Spitz Mar 1955

The Soteriolgical Aspect Of The Doctrine Of The Holy Trinity According To The Lutheran Confessions, Lewis W. Spitz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran Confessions are basically doxological in their treatment of the Holy Trinity, as they sound forth a hymn of praise to the grace and mercy of the Triune God. The theme of their exultant song is Soli deo gloria! But the God to whom alone shall be all glory is the Triune God: the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost - three distinct Persons in one divine Essence. Measuring the space which the Confessions devote to the various doctrines which they profess, one might think otherwise.

The Message Of Law And Gospel In The Old Testament, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer Mar 1955

The Message Of Law And Gospel In The Old Testament, Alfred Von Rohr Sauer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In treating this topic the writer purposes to approach his task neither from the systematic, nor from the historical, nor from the practical point of view. He intends to let the Scriptures of the Old Testament speak for themselves. In fact, he will restrict the scope of his work by directing the reader's attention not to the entire Old Testament, but rather chiefly to the Prophets and Psalms; not to all the Prophets and poets, but chiefly to the Prophets of the eighth and seventh centuries B. C. and to those poets who sing especially about God's judgment and grace.
