The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg Aug 1955

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

Archaeology is, furthermore, of great value because it relates exegesis to historical facts. Christianity is a historical religion, based upon events and experiences which transpired in history. Allegorical and symbolical interpretations often ignore the historical background of the Christian religion and lead to aberrations in religious thought. While the New Testament as a supernatural revelation harbors many elements transcending historical verification, it does nevertheless contain much material which can be determined by historical study. Thus Dana asserts: "There is no feature of the process of interpretation more important than the reconstruction of the historical situation out of which a given …

Lutherans landed in America before the arrival of the Mayflower. Some Danish Lutherans, looking for the Northwest Passage, buried forty of their dead on Hudson Bay in 1619. In December of the same year Pastor Rasmus Jensen held a Lutheran Christmas service on the shores of what is now the United States of America.

Does The R.S.V. Mutilate The New Testament Text?, Arthur F. Katt Aug 1955

Does The R.S.V. Mutilate The New Testament Text?, Arthur F. Katt

Concordia Theological Monthly

An outstanding feature of the Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible is the acknowledged and undeniable fact that its New Testament is based on a much better text than was available to the King James translators in 1607-1611 or to Luther in 1522-1545. The R. S. V. New Testament is essentially a translation of the Greek New Testament used in our colleges and seminaries for the past half century, whether it be the world-renowned edition of Nestle, or that of Westcott and Hort, or, still earlier, that of Tischendorf. Thus the R. S. V. provides pastors with an English …

The Barthian Inversion: Gospel And Law, Thomas Coates Jul 1955

The Barthian Inversion: Gospel And Law, Thomas Coates

Concordia Theological Monthly

Is the influence of Karl Barth on the wane? One of Europe's foremost Lutheran theologians, Oscar Cullmann of the University of Basle, is of the opinion that it is. He attributes this development to Barth's postwar neutralism, which has struck an unresponsive chord in the hearts of those who discern in the Communist ideology the negation of every Christian principle.

Third Corinthians, Martin H. Scharlemann, W. B. Streufert Jul 1955

Third Corinthians, Martin H. Scharlemann, W. B. Streufert

Concordia Theological Monthly

The mysteries surrounding the apocryphal letter called Third Corinthians are enough to challenge the imagination and intuitive skill of the most astute Sherlock Holmes who might be inclined to operate in the field of the New Testament. Who wrote the letter? How did it get into the canon of the Syrian and Armenian churches for a few hundred years? Why was it lost for so many centuries? These are some of the exciting questions posed by this remarkable document.

The Contribution Of Archaeology To The Interpretation Of The New Testament, Raymond F. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The pastor, the missionary, the parochial school teacher, the Sunday school and weekday school teachers, the Christian youth leaders, and others use the Bible in their respective fields of labor in the Lord's vineyard. If these Christian workers and leaders are to fulfill the intention of the divinely appointed ministry of reconciliation and accomplish the perfecting of the saints through the Word of Truth, a correct and adequate understanding of the Old and New Testament Scriptures, together with their proper application, is essential. The explanation and the application of the Word of God must rest upon a sound and self …

The Church Of South India -- A Development Of Union Movements, Herbert Kluck

An Historical And Philosophical Evaluation Of Rosicrucianism, Edward W. Wessling

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis will attempt to evaluate historically and philosophically a movement which for more than three decades has courted the eye and interest of American readers through advertising claims for "the system of metaphysical and physical philosophy intended to awaken the latent faculties of the individual whereby he may utilize to a better advantage his natural talents and lead a more happy life.”

A Study Of The Words Of Jesus: Let A Man Deny Himself And Follow Me--The Relationship Of Renunciation To Discipleship In The Synoptics, A Paul Meyer Jun 1955

A Study Of The Words Of Jesus: Let A Man Deny Himself And Follow Me--The Relationship Of Renunciation To Discipleship In The Synoptics, A Paul Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

This research paper is the outgrowth of a personal struggle. The problem posed has in the past very sincerely disturbed the writer; this research has helped him personally in arriving at an answer. The writer's early background gave rise to the problem. His father had at an early age impressed him with the fact that scripture cannot but confront its reader. It is God's message. His mother was reared in a rather legalistic pietism, and this tended to influence him in a pietistic Way. The passages which caused the most mental anguish were those concerning renunciation, passages which, upon first …

The Day Of Yahweh- Its Background And Usage In Selected Prophets, Walter Emil Rast

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this study is to deal with some of the problems relevant to this broad, prophetic idea. This involves concerning ourselves, with the origin of the idea, and the form it took in the prophetic mind. As a result, we have devoted the first chapter to an investigation of certain problems connected with the origin and background of the idea. In the second and third chapters, our concern is with the concept as it unfolds itself in the prophetic books. In both these chapters, our intent is one of comparison and contrast, in seeking both common and diverse …

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke Jun 1955

An Anaylsis And Comparison Of Eschatological Elements In The Hymns And Sermons Of The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod, James R. Luecke

Bachelor of Divinity

It is in the wake of the proceedings of the Evanston Assembly of the World Council of Churches, and the re-examination of the Christian Hope in nearly every denomination of Christendom that this paper has been prepared. If it can truly be said that the actual living doctrine of a church is not properly that contained in its books only, but rather also that proclaimed from its pulpits and in the worship of its people, then this paper has value. It is the writer's belief that this study will suggest more nearly than any other study to date the actual …

Soren Kierkegaard's Critique Of Nineteenth Century Christiandom, Andrew M. Weyermann Jun 1955

Soren Kierkegaard's Critique Of Nineteenth Century Christiandom, Andrew M. Weyermann

Bachelor of Divinity

Every criticism and evaluation of Kierkegaard’s message is made on his grounds and on the basis of his works. The basic criteria for criticism is the criteria Kierkegaard employed to judge his age; namely, Christianity of the New Testament. As he saw it, his task was to define what it took.ma to be a Christian on the basis of the New Testament. The question is: to what extent does Kierkegaard in his attack actually base his criticism and corrective on the interpretation of Christianity in the New Testament? This question is posed with the recognition that Kierkegaard himself did not …

The Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church Abd Fellowship With Other Lutherans In America, Andrew Brondos Jun 1955

The Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church Abd Fellowship With Other Lutherans In America, Andrew Brondos

Bachelor of Divinity

The SELC has related itself positively and negatively to other Lutheran churches in the United States. With some church bodies it has declared agreement and has affiliated with this group--the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. With others, though there have been repeated attempts and invitations for union, the SELC has declined to affiliate. These positions, affiliations or non-affiliations are the points considered in this thesis. That is the scope of this thesis in content. In time the scope of this thesis includes the period from the organizing of the SELC in September of 1902 to the end of …

The Relationship Of Group Psychology To The Work Of The Holy Ghost, Marvin L. Albers Jun 1955

The Relationship Of Group Psychology To The Work Of The Holy Ghost, Marvin L. Albers

Bachelor of Divinity

The thesis which this paper will seek to set forth and defend is that there is a relationship existing between the two. This relationship, however, does not reach the status of a. correlation. The two are not equal, rather, group psychology is a tool through which a minister can become a more effective agent in the work of the Holy Ghost.

The Missionary Endeavors Of Marcus Whitman, Michael C. Trinklein Jun 1955

The Missionary Endeavors Of Marcus Whitman, Michael C. Trinklein

Bachelor of Divinity

It shall be the writer’s objectives to first of' all gather together, correlate, and evaluate all the possible important factors which could be termed causes for the massacre; and secondly, to try to determine how much of the responsibility for the failure of the mission can be laid directly to its leader, Dr. Marcus Whitman, who is usually exonerated completely from blame.

Major movements, the men that guided them, and significant historical realities, with special attention given to the extent of American Lutheran participation, will form the major part of this inquiry.

The Rise Of Fraternal Organizations In The United States In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Frederick William Dodge Jun 1955

The Rise Of Fraternal Organizations In The United States In The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century, Frederick William Dodge

Bachelor of Divinity

Many Lutherans have written on the subject of fraternal organizations. Their interest has usually been the doctrine of the lodge as opposed to the doctrine of the Church. It is hoped that this study may be a start toward our task of “rounding out" our understanding of fraternal organizations. I trust that the Commission on Fraternal Organizations of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod will find it possible to continue studies in this direction.

Anglican Christology Of The Upper Stream From '"Lux Mundi" To "Essays Catholic And Critical.", Norman Nagel Jun 1955

Anglican Christology Of The Upper Stream From '"Lux Mundi" To "Essays Catholic And Critical.", Norman Nagel

Concordia Theological Monthly

When a certain theologian was asked what in English theology would most reward study, with twinkling and Teutonic eye he replied, "They don't have any." Now it is true that the issues which have most exercised churchmen in this country do not seem to have been primarily theological One ncvcr ceases to wonder at the thousands of parish priests in the sixteenth century who found no difficulty in making do whatever new or revised prayer book happened to come to them in the post. When divisions came, they were summed up in terms more of polity than of theology.

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty Jun 1955

Preaching On The Holy Spirit: A Study Of Luther's Sermons On The Evangelical Pericopcs, Martin E. Marty

Concordia Theological Monthly

"In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," sighed Luther, in reference to current doctrinal misunderstanding. "In our day the Holy Spirit suffers great ignominy," might be a contemporary comment on neglect of the worship of, and witness to, the Holy Spirit. It has become almost a rubric to bemoan this neglect on Whitsunday, the third great feast of the church year, but this complaint is often followed by a tendency to contribute to the neglect and the ignominy through silence from the pulpit, as far as a living concern for the work of the Holy Spirit is concerned, …
