How The Gospel Works, Richard R. Caemmerer Sr.
Concordia Theological Monthly
In the long plan of God we can imagine one good issue emerging from this debate. That is that the meaning of the Gospel becomes clearer and its preaching to the church and the world more apt and timely.

College students have probably been "'investigated"' more than any other single category of people. They have certainly been the subject of many articles and essays in recent years. However, much of what has been written has either been without empirical basis altogether, or else the empirical research has focused on only a small minority of the campus population. Hardness Of Heart: A Study In Biblical Thematic, Frederick W. Danker
Hardness Of Heart: A Study In Biblical Thematic, Frederick W. Danker
Concordia Theological Monthly
Lack of ready acceptance of the Gospel by all people was a perplexing problem, especially so for the early church. At stake were not only the credentials of Jesus as the Christ but also the authority of the apostolic message. If God's own people rejected Jesus, could He still be considered a viable candidate for Israel's highest office? And if the church's heralds were the instruments of proclamation of the Word of salvation, why was response to the message so spotty and relatively fruitless? Earnest assessment of the problem led early theologians to their customary quarry, the Old Testament, for …
Martin Luther's Revision Of The Eucharistic Canon In The Formula Missae Of 1523, Frank C. Senn
Martin Luther's Revision Of The Eucharistic Canon In The Formula Missae Of 1523, Frank C. Senn
Concordia Theological Monthly
Martin Luther was the most conservative of the Reformers when it came to the work of liturgical revision. This was nowhere more evident than in his first effort at revising the Mass for evangelical usage: the Formula missae et communionis of 1523. He retained the use of the Latin language along with the optional use of lights, incense, and vestments. On the whole, the Formula missae faithfully followed the traditional Western structure, sequence, and content of the Mass. It is characterized not by what Luther added to the traditional Mass, but by what he deleted.

With this issue this journal begins a new phase in its 42-year history of theological service. Our format is altered slightly, and we launch a new schedule of appearances, for in the future we will appear five times a year. We are retaining for our name the initials that have become synonymous with us. We will always be the "CTM." Our subscribers will continue to receive the equivalent of a 400-page book of contemporary theological thought each year for their subscription money. The homiletics section will receive a greater proportionate emphasis, but we do not anticipate any serious reduction in …
Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff
Justification And Anthropology, Wenzel Lohff
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author suggests that contemporary difficulties with respect to understanding the article of justification arise in large measure from the fact that justification has been separated from its anthropological rootage. At the same time, Dr. Lohff argues that the doctrine of justification offers great help to modern man, who often feels trapped in his very humanness. Furthermore, justification, when proclaimed properly, makes Christian unity possible. He describes justification briefly as the right and unequivocal determination of a human practice: to always live anew the life of faith in the Gospel.
The New Testament Period, Terence Y. Mullins
The New Testament Period, Terence Y. Mullins
Concordia Theological Monthly
If we are to approach the New Testament as part of the action of God in history, then we are committed to studying it by examining the situation at the start of the New Testament period, observing the changes and change agents (including the writing of the New Testament itself) which a historian may identify as operating during the New Testament period, and then describing the situation as it existed at the end of the New Testament period. To do this we need some way of marking off the beginning and the end of the New Testament period.

The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs
The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author argues that the historical-critical approach to the Scripture leads to unedifying results when the practitioner fails to treat Scripture as the Book of the church, containing the record of God's unique revelation. He argues that the history of the canon has been neglected and that canonical history gives the key to understanding the nature of Scripture as the Book of the church. He concentrates on the canonical shape of the Pentateuch. Although Dr. Childs endorses the major results of the historical-critical approach to the Old Testament, he argues that the historical-critical method is neither the perfect nor the …

The Christianizing Of Abraham: The Interpretation Of Abraham In Early Christianity, Robert L. Wilken

Justification In Luther's Preaching On Luke 18:9-14, Lowell C. Green
Justification In Luther's Preaching On Luke 18:9-14, Lowell C. Green
Concordia Theological Monthly
The author develops the thesis that Martin Luther rested his pastoral preaching on doctrinal preaching. In a careful examination of texts of Luther, he demonstrates this and raises the question concerning the continuing importance of doctrinal preaching.
