Erasmus On The Study Of Scriptures, Carl S. Meyer Dec 1969

Erasmus On The Study Of Scriptures, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Erasmus (1469-1536) was the editor of the first published Greek New Testament printed from movable type (1516). He translated the books of the New Testament into Latin and also paraphrased them (except Revelation) in that language. He published the notes of Lorenzo Valla (1406-1457) on the New Testament. He must likewise be accounted as one of the important theologians of the first half of the 16th century as well as an earnest advocate of the study of Scriptures.

Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson Dec 1969

Erasmus The Exegete, Marvin Anderson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Erasmus appears everywhere in the theological controversies of the 16th century. Discovery in 1506 of his beloved Lorenzo Valla's New Testament Notes encouraged Erasmus to continue the task of editing, annotating, and paraphrasing the New Testament. Whatever can be said about Erasmus, his dedication to this task has earned the gratitude of generations of Christians. His latest encomium is Erasmus of Christendom. An analysis of Erasmus’ devotion to New Testament study adds depth and breadth to the philosophy of Christ. Heirs of the 16th century should ponder the life work of Erasmus in this 500th anniversary of his birth. In …

Reading Programs In Theology: Forms Of Church And Ministry, Erwin L. Lueker Dec 1969

Reading Programs In Theology: Forms Of Church And Ministry, Erwin L. Lueker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The study of the church can begin with almost any point of philosophy or theology. The church is Christology-Christ taking form in the world. The church is anthropology - people growing into the full stature of manhood. The church is sociology-the really beloved community forming as the body of its Lord. The church is wisdom-the pillar and ground of truth. The church is semantics-the Word taking form not in sign or sound but in flesh and blood. The church is eschatology-the little flock which has received, is received, and will receive the Kingdom. The church is family-a mother nourishes her …

Erasmus, Luther, And Aquinas, Philip Watson Dec 1969

Erasmus, Luther, And Aquinas, Philip Watson

Concordia Theological Monthly

One of the most recent additions to the growing Roman Catholic literature on Luther is a study of his doctrine of the bondage of the will in the light-as the subtitle of the German edition says-of the Biblical and ecclesiastical tradition. Its author, Harry J. McSorley, endorses Luther's own view of the outstanding importance of his De servo arbitrio as dealing with the most central issue of his reforming work. He also endorses Luther's claim that his primary concern was a reformation, not simply of practical abuses but of doctrine, and he fully agrees that no area of doctrine in …

Situationism And Law In Christian Ethics, Paul Jersild Nov 1969

Situationism And Law In Christian Ethics, Paul Jersild

Concordia Theological Monthly

Our purpose in these pages is to focus on the question of law in Christian ethics and consider in what sense we can speak of the "law of God." This question is raised in a quite critical manner in situation ethics, and for that reason we shall discuss the subject in relation to this approach, and particularly in relation to the work of Joseph Fletcher. Our concern is to present a theological basis for the law-a basis that is notably lacking in situation ethics - and seek to clarify the relationship between love and law in the Christian understanding.

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann Nov 1969

Methods In Studying The Biblical Text Today, John Reumann

Concordia Theological Monthly

A rich variety of methods exists today for studying Scripture - text criticism, philology, literary criticism; source, form, and redaction criticism, Religionsgeschichte, and a host of other "Geschichten" - so that the Bible is probably the world's most closely and minutely studied book. But how can all these techniques be put together into a method, in the classical sense of meth' hodos, a "way" "after" something, a way for getting from one point to another, from the text to the practical goal that concerns us here, proclaiming or communicating the text today?

Old Testament Introduction, Holland H. Jones Oct 1969

Old Testament Introduction, Holland H. Jones

Concordia Theological Monthly

In its report, "A Lutheran Stance Toward Contemporary Biblical Studies," the Commission on Theology and Church Relations described what it considered to be ''basic and legitimate elements of the so-called historical-critical method." Since the publication of this report there has been, it seems to me, an increased interest on the part of individuals and pastoral conferences to study and apply the techniques of this interpretative method. Invitations to present studies of Biblical pericopes applying this method have multiplied. In such presentations one normally illustrates how Old Testament introductions are used in determining the literary form of a pericope and discovering …

Were The Reformers Mission-Minded?., Thomas Coates

The subject "The Reformation and Missions" might well suggest a very short paper indeed. Both theologically and practically, the Reformation period is notable chiefly for its lack of missionary emphasis.

Preaching And Liturgical Life, Robert M. Starenko Oct 1969

Preaching And Liturgical Life, Robert M. Starenko

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching is an event, a living, pulsating action of God, as real today as it was yesterday, as vital for contemporary man as it was for first-century man. Preaching is always an eschatological event, part of the on-going action of God through His Son so that wherever that Word is proclaimed, God is calling and gathering His people, bringing them together into the oneness of Christ's body, the church, leading men to response, fitting them for service in His world.

Editorial: The Task Ahead, Herbert T. Mayer Sep 1969

Editorial: The Task Ahead, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

September marks the beginning of a new academic year at Concordia Seminary and provides a natural stimulus to look at the task ahead of us. It promises to be an exciting year: a major task force is subjecting the total curriculum to analysis. We may not recognize the place after they are through. This would be good in the eyes of many pastors, students, and faculty. The students set another ball of curriculur revision in motion last year. Unfortunately, only one-third of that group will be on campus this year. In the judgment of some, the Denver convention of The …

A Step Behind The Stars, Roger B. Kronmann Sep 1969

A Step Behind The Stars, Roger B. Kronmann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The following sermon was preached by the Reverend Roger B. Kronmann, pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, St. Louis, Mo. (The American Lutheran Church), at the first eucharistic celebration at Concordia Seminary after the declaration of pulpit and altar fellowship with The American Lutheran Church by The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which operates the seminary. Pastor Kronmann also participated in the celebration of the sacrament. Those who heard the sermon and took part in the service asked that the sermon appear in this journal as one indication of our joy in this new manifestation of Christian fellowship.

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians, Martin H. Scharlemann Sep 1969

The Secret Of God's Plan: Studies In Ephesians, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

Verse 9 of chapter 1 of Ephesians provides a good general tide to highlight one basic theological emphasis of the letter. There the Greek, literally translated, makes reference to "the mystery of His will." The Revised Standard Version in this case retains just that wording from the Authorized Version.

The Mission On Which We Are Sent, Paul E. Jacobs Sep 1969

The Mission On Which We Are Sent, Paul E. Jacobs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Affirmations on the Mission of the Church which The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod adopted at the Detroit convention in 1965 are part of the evidence of the ongoing struggle of one part of the church to understand what and why the church is in the world. The struggle has not been easy nor has it been without conflict. The affirmations call us to see the church's mission in terms of people rather than church structures. They compel us to wrestle with the standards of comfort and convenience by which we continually serve ourselves. They plead with us to …

Theological Education: Crisis And Renewal, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

In the course of the confessional revival in the Church of the Augsburg Confession during the 19th and 20th centuries, Lutheran theologians interpreted the statements of the Symbolical Books about the sacred ministry in three typical ways.

The Gospel And Its Freedom Today: A Foreword, Carl S. Meyer Jun 1969

The Gospel And Its Freedom Today: A Foreword, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The proclamation of the gospel with its message of freedom in Christ Jesus is the compelling drive of the churchman's life. To say that the unifying principle of his life's work is the furtherance of the gospel is to say that he is conscious of the basic specification of his task. But it is saying more than that. It postulates a commitment, a conscious program, and the ability to carry out the task. It permeates the churchman's being and total personality, his dealings with his fellow servants, and his conscious evaluation of them and of self.

A Tribute To An Evangelical Ministry, Arthur C. Repp Jun 1969

A Tribute To An Evangelical Ministry, Arthur C. Repp

Concordia Theological Monthly

One can hardly speak of a Fuerbringer without bringing in some church history. This is especially true of Alfred O. Fuerbringer, who traces a line of ministers as forebears back to the 17th century through his father's side, and two centuries farther back on his grandmother's side, including one of the signers of the Formula of Concord in 1577-1580 (Martinus Bungerus). He has an even more intimate relationship with the Missouri Synod, for his grandfather was one of the Saxon founders. Two of his predecessors to the presidency of Concordia Seminary were related to him, C. F. W. Walther, who …
