The Concept Of Time In The Old Testament, Hans Walter Wolff Jan 1974

The Concept Of Time In The Old Testament, Hans Walter Wolff

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the Old Testament we find abundant evidence for the view that man lives out his life within time, that he lives within times that change. By examining characteristic Old Testament texts, we shall attempt to gain a picture of how the Old Testament's understanding of time relates to its understanding of man.

The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs Dec 1972

The Old Testament As Scripture Of The Church, Brevard S. Childs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author argues that the historical-critical approach to the Scripture leads to unedifying results when the practitioner fails to treat Scripture as the Book of the church, containing the record of God's unique revelation. He argues that the history of the canon has been neglected and that canonical history gives the key to understanding the nature of Scripture as the Book of the church. He concentrates on the canonical shape of the Pentateuch. Although Dr. Childs endorses the major results of the historical-critical approach to the Old Testament, he argues that the historical-critical method is neither the perfect nor the …

Luther On Christ And The Old Testament, James S. Preus Sep 1972

Luther On Christ And The Old Testament, James S. Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

Careful reading of this article will contribute to getting the hermeneutical debate in our Synod beyond the present impasse that has been created by a non-Lutheran posing of the alternatives by so many who are involved in the debate.

The Message Of Chronicles: Rally 'Round The Temple, Roddy L. Braun Sep 1971

The Message Of Chronicles: Rally 'Round The Temple, Roddy L. Braun

Concordia Theological Monthly

Often neglected by casual Bible readers as well as Biblical scholars, the books of Chronicles offer an important theological interpretation of Israel's history. The author delineates the Chronicler's perspective and compares it with that of the Deuteronomic History.

Religious Music Among The Jews, Walter E. Buszin Jul 1968

Religious Music Among The Jews, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

"Where were you ... when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?" With these words God challenged Job, who is referred to at times as the patron saint of musicians. God's words to Job serve to remind the Old Testament reader that already earlier, in prehistoric times, worship and song had been used together to glorify and extol the Creator. Ancient peoples, including Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and a veritable host of early generations of mankind, recognized that the primary function of music is to honor and worship the Deity. Africans, Asiatics, Mongolians, Europeans, …

Preaching From The Old Testament, Carl Graesser Jr. Sep 1967

Preaching From The Old Testament, Carl Graesser Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

Preaching from the Old Testament has fallen on evil times. Many a pastor, even if he does not have a mental block from struggles with Hebrew at the seminary or a feeling of guilt because of rusty exegetical skills, feels much more at home in the New Testament. If he should attempt to preach on an Old Testament text, he cannot assume that his audience has either a ready knowledge or interest in the Old Testament. Unlike a bygone generation, his audience would think it a joke to name a child Jehoshaphat or Ahab or Hepzibah.

The Study And Interpretation Of The Old Testament, Albert E. Glock Feb 1967

The Study And Interpretation Of The Old Testament, Albert E. Glock

Concordia Theological Monthly

The subtitle of this study might well be: "Prisoners of Hope: New Perspectives for the Study of Old Testament History and Theology." The single Biblical occurrence of the phrase, "prisoners of hope” is located in a "messenger speech" (Botenspruch) in Zechariah 9:11-13.

Christ’S Use Of The Old Testament With Special Reference To The Pentateuch, Victor A. Bartling Sep 1965

Christ’S Use Of The Old Testament With Special Reference To The Pentateuch, Victor A. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the preparation of this essay I was determined to let the Gospels give us the answer to Part I concerning our Lord's attitude toward the Old Testament. It seems to me that there is much that we can gain for our own guidance and inspiration from such a study. Part II deals with the question of the authorship of the Pentateuch. It is appended in the hope that it will help to put current discussions on the Mosaic authorship of the first five books of the Bible into a Biblical frame of reference.

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer Oct 1964

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

This Issue represents a new venture for this journal. At the request of the Commission on Church Literature of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod a special 96-page issue devoted entirely to Old Testament studies was planned. The issue is beamed at parish pastors and Old Testament scholars. We hope that it will serve two purposes: (1) to make dear what much of the shouting is about in the field of Old Testament studies, and (2) to help the man who wishes to preach the Old Testament with greater effectiveness.

Current Roman Catholic Thought On Prophetic Interpretation, Walter E. Rast Oct 1964

Current Roman Catholic Thought On Prophetic Interpretation, Walter E. Rast

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is common knowledge by now that Roman Catholicism today is in the midst of a widespread movement of renewed interest in the Bible. One could cite as an illustration the discussions on the schema dealing with the church at the recent session of the Vatican Council in which New Testament ideas of the church played a noticeable role. Though for non-Roman Catholics the schema on the church may still leave something to be desired, the attention given to Biblical material indicates an important development.

Problems Of Messianic Interpretation, Alfred Von Rohr Roehrs Oct 1964

Problems Of Messianic Interpretation, Alfred Von Rohr Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

As Christian scholars consider problems of Biblical interpretation, it is well that they pause and take note of areas of agreement that have been reached, and also spell out differences that still exist. It was pointed out recently that a considerable area of agreement has been reached in this field among exegetes of various denominations.

Covenant And Justification In The Old Testament, Walter R. Roehrs Oct 1964

Covenant And Justification In The Old Testament, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lutheran World Federation convention at Helsinki in 1963 was not able to reach agreement on a formulation of the doctrine of justification. This lack of agreement, it is said, does not imply disagreement regarding the doctrine itself, but it resulted from the inability to formulate or present this basic teaching of Scripture to modern man in such a way as to speak to him in terms that are relevant and pertinent to him. This difficulty arises, it is said, particularly because modern man no longer asks Luther's question: "How do I find a gracious God?" but asks: "Is there …

Old Testament Theology As Heilsgcschichte, Arlis John Ehlene Oct 1964

Old Testament Theology As Heilsgcschichte, Arlis John Ehlene

Concordia Theological Monthly

An important group of Old Testament scholars in Germany and America is currently making copious use of the term Heilsgeschichte and the ideas associated with it. Avoided until recently by scientific theologians as suggestive of Biblicism and obscurantism, it has staged a comeback as a key word in some of the most respected scholarly circles.

The Old Testament In The Pulpit, Herbert T. Mayer Oct 1964

The Old Testament In The Pulpit, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

How much should the pastor preach from the Old Testament? Probably the general answer should be: More than he has been doing. A brief review of sermon study series and sermon books published for pastors of The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod reveals an average of four or five New Testament studies for each Old Testament text.

The Theology Of The Word Of God In The Old Testament, Walter R. Roehrs

Concordia Theological Monthly

In attempting to describe the Word of God we soon become aware of resorting to a process which from a purely logical point of view may be regarded as reasoning in a circle.

Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann May 1959

Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

In our day there is nothing sensational in the remark that the authors of our New Testament documents often quote the Septuagint version rather than the Hebrew text in their use of the Old Testament. In fact, as long ago as 1782 Randolph came to the conclusion that 119 of the 239 actual quotations from the Old Testament occurring in the New were taken from the Septuagint. This was almost 50 years before Doepke's Hermeneutik der neutestamentlichen Schriftsteller ( 1829) clearly demonstrated the extensive methodological agreements between New Testament authors and rabbinic writers, thereby laying the groundwork for our contemporary …

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology (Continued), Henry P. Hamann Jr. Feb 1958

Justification By Faith In Modern Theology (Continued), Henry P. Hamann Jr.

Concordia Theological Monthly

In accordance with the writer's convictions concerning the source of St. Paul's teachings mentioned in the previous article we begin the investigation of the present topic with the questions: What might Paul be expected to mean by words like "righteous" (δίχαιοζ), "righteousness" (διχαιοςύνη) , "justify" (διχαιοῦν) on the basis of his knowledge of the Old Testament? What effect would the use of these terms and related ones in Aramaic by the rabbis be expected to have on his own usage?
