Le 8 juin 1793 la ville de Caen se déclara en insurrection contre la Convention Nationale, protestant contre la proscription de vingt-neuf députés nationaux durant la révolution parisienne du 31 mai. Dans les semaines qui suivirent, Caen devint le centre principal de la révolte provinciale contre la Convention Montagnarde. La ville attira des élus de neuf autres départe ments bretons et normands, qui formèrent ensemble le Comité Central de Résistance à l'Oppression. Today, covered wooden highway bridges stand as a reminder of a bygone era in American history. When traveling the lesser known roads of Indiana one may encounter just such a monument to the past. Too many times these historical artifacts are marred by the ravages of time and the destructiveness of vandalism. Yet many of the few remaining structures are now being preserved as historical landmarks by such organizations as local covered bridge societies and various parks departments. The Evolution Of The Cadence In The Cyclic Masses Of Dufay, Ockeghem, Josquin, And Gombert, Janet E. Giffin

Four composers have been chosen for this study. They were the leaders of four successive generations of composers influential in the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their masses were written between the years 1420 A.D. and 1560 A.D. Many significant changes took place during this period of one hundred forty years. Older compositional techniques such as the use of formes fixes and isorhythm all but disappeared. Cantus firmus technique was transformed and extended to unify the mass cycle. Aesthetic considerations became more important to the composer than liturgical canons, and composers began to regard themselves as artistic creators not mere …

Schoenberg's Moses and Aron has been called the most important product of his musical maturity, implying that many of his theoretical, musical, philosophical, and spiritual ideas, both public and personal, can be found in this unique work. The work does not fit neatly into any prescribed category that has come before it or after it. It is possible, however, to trace the development of the work from Schoenberg's own preceding compositions, which in many cases provide the roots of ideas more fully developed in Moses and Aron. The bulk of the critical study of Gustavo Bècquer's leyendas has dealt with the thematics, stylistics, or the folkloric motifs and origins of the individual works. Surprisingly little attention has been given to the structure or the narrative techniques used in the leyendas as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine these structural and narrative aspects from a folkloric perspective in order to better appreciate Bècquer's blending of popular and literary art forms.

The parables of Jesus have been interpreted in many ways and by many different methods in the history of the Christian community. Biblical scholars have wrestled with their interpretations throughout the centuries, and in the last five centuries increasing numbers of lay persons have had more direct access to further biblical study. Even more recently, liberation movements throughout the world--and especially in Latin America--have engaged the "common people," (peasants and campesinos), many of whom are illiterate, in biblical study.

Starting from the assumption that war, whatever else it is, is a matrix of values rooted in some type of spirituality, the article presents a brief typology of spiritualities of war: holy war, heroic war, and political (or "just") war. The article concludes by discussing implications of the typology for current reflection on problems of war and peace in the nuclear age. (A fuller treatment of the typology and its applications may be found in Paul Valliere, Holy War and Pentecostal Peace [New York: The Seabury Press, 1983]).

The Polish United Workers' Party, like the CPSU, has faced a dilemma in its attempts to control its growth. The problem is in maintaining its leading, elite role while remaining fairly representative of the population, or at least of the working class. The difficulty in maintaining this balance has been compounded by the Party's changing image of itself and its role.
