When Henry Somm and Alfred Jarry died in Paris in 1907, they were penniless and forgotten by all but their closest friends. However, the contrast between the life and work of these two artist/playwrights is graphically demonstrated by the conditions under which they passed away. Henry Somm, best known as a lesser-known Impressionist, was sixty-three years old when he died “of natural causes” in his atelier at 27 boulevard de Rochechouart. Alfred Jarry, friend of Picasso and a member of the avant-garde, died at thirty-four in indescribable filth within a closet-sized space between two floors in an apartment house. Since …

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.

Neither Hinduism nor Christianity had or have 'ecology' as their central focus. A contemporary Hindu or Christian ecology can be developed by rethinking and restructuring traditional teachings, amplifying seminal statements and linking these up with the dominating concern of the late 20th century, to 'save the earth'. Much has been written about Swami Vivekananda's appearance at the World Parliament of Religions in 1893. On the whole, the assessments of his appearance from both academics and non-academics has been positive, emphasising Vivekananda's contributions to religious harmony in the world. Vivekananda was and remains an exemplary spokesperson for the enduring themes of the Ramakrishna mission, in particular for the idea that all religions are true inasmuch as they lead to the same goal.

In his review of the 1932 English translation of Max Weber's famous study, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, United Church of Canada theologian John Line observed that Protestants in particular should pay close attention to Weber's findings. 'For they make it clear that Protestantism had a leading part in determining our present economic structure, a fact which puts in our hands a liability now that the faults of that structure have become apparent.' The World Commission on Environment and Development acknowledged that to reconcile human affairs with natural laws 'our cultural and spiritual heritages can reinforce our economic interests and survival imperatives'. But until very recently, the role of our cultural and spiritual heritages in environmental protection and sustainable development was ignored by international bodies, national governments, policy planners, and even environmentalists. Many fear that bringing religion into the environmental movement will threaten objectivity, scientific investigation, professionalism, or democratic values. According to an ancient Hindu myth the goddess Earth was once imprisoned at the bottom of the ocean, in the nether world, by a demon who had laid waste to the earth, causing havoc to the order of things. To rescue her from the demon, Lord Vishnu incarnated as a boar, as Varaha Avatar. He fought and killed the demon and released the goddess Earth by carrying her on his tusk to float free once more on the cosmic waters.
