My main aim here is to examine what the significance is of the communitarian critique of liberalism for Hermann Cohen's political philosophy. I will conclude that Cohen's socialist Kantianism can successfully meet this critique. Also, I will argue that his political philosophy can better deal with some of the problems that communitarians detect in our Western democracies than can communitarianism itself. One crucial reason for this is that Cohen completes the original Kantian liberal project by making all agents fully autonomous in the economic sphere.

Carap's attempt to develop an inductive logic has been criticized on a variety of grounds, and while there may be some philosophers who believe that difficulties with Carnap's approach can be overcome by further elaborations and modifications of his system, I think it is fair to say that the consensus is that the approach as a whole cannot succeed. In writing a paper on problems with inductive logic (and with Carnap's approach in particular), I might therefore be accused of beating a dead horse. The neo-Kantian Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) famously wrote that Kant “is the true and real originator of German socialism.” This paper seeks to explicate Cohen’s socialist reconstruction of Kant’s ethics and show that this reconstruction overcomes some weaknesses of Kant’s ethics. In conclusion, the paper discusses the contemporary relevance of Cohen’s cooperative socialism.

Peretti's novels provide a clear statement of the worldview of conservative Christians who hold the Bible to be literally true and without error. Not only is the reader presented with doctrinal positions, but the implications of those positions for life in modern society are spelled out as well. In this essay, I analyze Peretti's views of the modern world, its heroes and villains, and argue they are representative of the views of the New Christian Right (Liebman and Wuthnow) in the late 1980s and the 1990s.

Reflections On Religious Pluralism In The Indian Context, Margaret Chatterjee

Does pluralism in aesthetic and religious judgements necessarily lead to relativism? The writer takes the view that (a) religious pluralism does not only reveal itself in diversity of judgements but in other diversities as well; (b) such diversities suggest relativity rather than relativism. The pluralities invite not aggregation or toleration so much as understanding.

The Dalits of India who follow different religious traditions are beginning to come together these days as one people. While their main concern is to fight economic, political and cultural marginalization, what it means to the religions to which they belong is the question raised in this paper. In order to answer this, we should first have an idea of the kind of questions and problems they raise with respect to different religions. Thereafter we can proceed to some of the implications of this process for interfaith understanding and cooperation.

During 1992-3 I had the good fortune to live in Madras and spend the year reading both Tiruvaymoli, the Tamil religious classic composed by Satakopan of Kurukur, and also large sections of the early commentaries on it, particularly the great Itu of Nampillai. For the purpose of this study I met regularly with several learned teachers of the Srivaisnava tradition, with one of them for about two hours a day.
