The Los Angeles Hindu-Catholic Dialogue recently organized a workshop at Loyola Marymount University on Teaching Hinduism in Catholic High Schools (May 2010). Initiated by a Hindu member of the Dialogue who was disturbed by the World Religions textbook used in a local Catholic high school, the workshop's goal was to help teachers of World Religions at Catholic high schools teach Hindu traditions more accurately and respectfully. The daylong event featured sessions on Hindu Perspectives on Education, Resources and Strategies in Teaching Hinduism, and small group dialogues between Hindu speakers and attendees and Catholic teachers.

Today the field of Hindu-Christian studies is burgeoning with both advanced scholars and freshly minted PhDs. However, during most of the twentieth century it was rare for a Christian thinker to take non-Christian religions seriously as a meaningful area of theological inquiry. Those who did generally limited themselves to theorizing about these religions in the abstract, rather than engaging with living members of these religions. Five outstanding exceptions were Jules Monchanin, Swami Abhishiktananda, Raimundo Panikkar, Francis Acharya, and Bede Griffiths, all of whom were Catholic priests who settled in India over a sixteen year time period, from 1939 to 1955. …

Dualities is a serious contribution to Hindu-Christian studies, bringing fresh and challenging materials before us. It wonderfully brings together reflection on feminist concerns, attention to the metaphors by which we identify and organize natural and social realities, and critical attention to how linguistic and ontological categories, such as dualities and dualism, fluidity and fluidities, have effects of ethical and spiritual import.

As John Thatamanil confesses in his Foreward to Michelle Voss Roberts' Dualities, I too, as a nondualist theologian, was initially apprehensive about Voss Roberts' title. However, I quickly came to find that the plural emphasis of dualities and the private emphasis of non-dualism actually speak to similar concerns over the inadequacies of both monism and dualism. The dualism denied by non-dualism and the multiplicity and relationality affirmed by dualities are more harmonious than dissonant.
