Part 1: The Structuring Of Nephite Style, Brant Gardner Jan 2020

Part 1: The Structuring Of Nephite Style, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon tells the story of the Nephite people. That story began on plates the first writer, Nephi, made by hand. Their story ended on plates the last writer, Mormon, made by hand.1 Nephi created one record that chronicled the reigns of the kings and a second that covered the ministry.2 Mormon wrote in the official Nephite chronicle of the reigns of the kings3 but wrote a second work for a different and more sacred purpose.4

Chapter 16: Book Of 3 Nephi, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

3 Nephi I (1–2) The book of Nephi, son of Nephi, who was the son of Helaman, son of Helaman, who was the son of Alma, son of Alma, and named for Nephi the son of Lehi350 is the culmination of Mormon’s structural art. In this chapter he pulls his various threads together to highlight his essential message. The first structural way in which he indicates this is his message is that this particular book of Nephi was probably never a book on the large plates.351 Where Mormon has allowed the organization of the large plates to dictate the structure …

Part 2: Creating The Text, Brant Gardner Jan 2020

Part 2: Creating The Text, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

As Nephi began his last chapter, he reflected on what he had done. He wrote: And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.

Conclusions In Search Of Evidence, John Gee Jan 2020

Conclusions In Search Of Evidence, John Gee

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Riess’s book surveying the beliefs and behaviors of younger members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was supposed to compare the attitudes of younger generations with those of older generations. Unfortunately, flaws in the design, execution, and analysis of the survey prevent it from being what it was supposed to be. Instead the book is Riess’s musings on how she would like the Church to change, supported by cherry-picked interviews and an occasional result from the survey. The book demonstrates confusion about basic sampling methods, a failure to understand the relevant literature pertaining to the sociology of …

The Plan Of Salvation And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Edwards Jan 2020

The Plan Of Salvation And The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Edwards

Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel

Students of American religious history have not usually appreciated the extent to which the 1830 publication of the Book of Mormon introduced explicit presentations of the gospel of Jesus Christ and his plan of salvation into Judeo-Christian biblical discourse. This paper will feature a textual and structural exposition of the scripturally unique plan of salvation as taught in the Nephite scriptures. This exposition in turn will provide the necessary grounding for (1) distinguishing this plan from the gospel of Jesus Christ, (2) an examination of the Nephite prophets’ predominant focus on the redeeming functions of the plan, and (3) some …

One way to imagine and encounter the US landscape is as a religious landscape—that is, a landscape densely imprinted with religious histories and identities. If you were so inclined, you could travel from one religiously memorialized place to another, seemingly without end: historic sites of worship; commemorations of events, persons, and movements; religiously themed museums, theme parks, gardens, shrines, and reenactments; extant and nonextant intentional communities; entire municipalities where local life is closely coupled with particular traditions; and so on. As an “American Original,” Mormonism provides a truly fascinating itinerary of destinations; places integral to the formation, diversification, and expansion …

Whiteness In Modern Latter-Day Saint History And Culture, Jessica Marie Nelson

Mormon Studies Review

In the wake of the Alt-Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a strong statement announcing its “great sadness and deep concern” regarding the violence and intolerance on display by those who gathered in Charlottesville to defend a Confederate statue. The church concluded the statement by saying: “Our prayers are with those who are suffering because of this intolerance and hatred. We pray for peace and for understanding. Above all, we pray that we may treat one another with greater kindness, compassion and goodness.” Two days later the church updated the …

Words Of Wisdom: New Generations And New Challenges, Ryan T. Cragun

Mormon Studies Review

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, like many other denominations, is facing a number of challenges at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Should women play a more prominent role in the religion?1 Can the LDS Church accommodate lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals?2 Do transgender and queer individuals even fit within Mormon cosmology and conceptions of gender?3 Will the LDS Church adjust its standards to reflect modern norms relating to clothing, body modification, sexual activity, pornography, and masturbation?4 Does the LDS Church have an answer for the enormous wave of secularization that is leading to declining interest in …

Managing Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback, Rachel Anna Messenger, Norman W. Evans, K. James Hartshorn

Journal of Response to Writing

Error correction for English language learners’ (ELL) writing has long been debated in the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Some researchers say that marking all errors in students’ papers with written corrective feedback (WCF) is not manageable, while others think it is manageable. This study examines the manageability of the innovative dynamic written corrective feedback (DWCF) strategy, which has a more comprehensive approach to error feedback, and asks what factors influence the manageability of the strategy (including how long marking sessions take on average) and what suggestions experienced teachers who use DWCF have. The strategy …

The History Of A Cemetery: An Italian Swiss Cultural Essay, Plinio Martini, Richard Hacken Jan 2020

The History Of A Cemetery: An Italian Swiss Cultural Essay, Plinio Martini, Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Years ago, there was no cemetery in my village. This absence,

which weighed heavily upon the people as a cruel stroke of

fate, was a result of our village having earlier been part of a neighboring

community, whose more favorable location—sunny and protected

from the north winds—had allowed it to prosper while our community

dwindled.3 After long discussions and arguments, the mountain pastures,

valley meadows and forests—formerly communal property—

were divided up into separate realms with precise boundaries: everything

was written down on parchment and sworn to in the name of

God.

Canton Ticino And The Italian Swiss Immigration To California, Tony Quinn Jan 2020

Canton Ticino And The Italian Swiss Immigration To California, Tony Quinn

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The southernmost of Switzerland’s twenty-six cantons, the

Ticino, may speak Italian, sing Italian, eat Italian, drink Italian and rival

any Italian region in scenic beauty—but it isn’t Italy,” so writes author

Paul Hofmann1 describing the one Swiss canton where Italian is the

required language and the cultural tie is to Italy to the south, not to the

rest of Switzerland to the north.

«Человек» – Центральная Тема Языковой Подготовки На Продвинутом Уровне, Татьяна Пшенина

Russian Language Journal

As students progress from advanced to the professional level, it is critical that their control of speech acts increasingly approximates that of native speakers. The article The Person: A Central Theme in an Advanced Russian Language Course provides an example of one of the methodologies used in the Russian Overseas Flagship program for addressing these goals. Instructional units require student reflection and critical thinking (e.g. constructing of mental maps) to help them in expressing ideas and concepts in a way that meets the linguistic, socio-pragmatic and intercultural requirements of the range of personal and professional situations in which they find …

Особенности Преподавания Курса «Межкультурная Коммуникация» Для Студентов Программы «Флагман» В Казахстане, Жанар Ибраева

Russian Language Journal

Scholars in both the theory and practice of foreign language study have justifiably recognized the formation of student intercultural competence as an essential condition for effective second language acquisition. This study describes the challenges of teaching an advanced course on “Intercultural Communication” for US students in the Flagship Program in Kazakhstan. The course places an emphasis on the acquisition of lexical, phraseological and socio-pragmatic aspects of Russian essential for dayto- day communication in an advanced immersion setting. In addition, the course examines common forms of both verbal (e.g, use of kinship terms, forms of address) and non-verbal communication behaviors (e.g., …

Maximizing Target Language Use Outside The Classroom: The Advanced-Level Student Of Russian As Digital Consumer, Alexander M. Groce

Russian Language Journal

The article examines recent trends in digital and social media consumption among domestic foreign language students and Russian Overseas Flagship students, analyzing a number of approaches for seeding Russian-language material within students’ everyday extracurricular digital practices. The goal of the project has been to encourage language learners to strengthen their own skills at identifying Russian media sources of personal or professional interest and incorporating habits of media consumption into their language-learning experience. The recommendations provided are informed by the results of a survey distributed among American students of Russian in Kazakhstan during the period from 2017 to 2019. The survey …

Казахстанская Модель Академической Программы «Флагман», Людмила Екшембеева

Russian Language Journal

The article The Kazakhstan Model of the Russian Flagship Academic Program examines the current model of the Russian Flagship Capstone Program as implemented in Kazakhstan. This study analyzes the application of core principles of the Flagship overseas training model as well as necessary adaptations required by the distinctively multi-cultural environment of the host country. Among core adaptations, two new courses were introduced: Kazakh language and intercultural communications. In order to foster greater inclusion of capstone participants within the host culture, students are encouraged to study and reflect on both implicit and explicit meanings of the linguistic and cultural texts they …
