An Archetypal Analysis Of Sorensen's "On This Star" & Hemon's "Maria Chapdelaine", Joseph C. Murphy Jan 1985

An Archetypal Analysis Of Sorensen's "On This Star" & Hemon's "Maria Chapdelaine", Joseph C. Murphy

Inscape

On This Star by Virginia Sorensen and Maria Chapdeliane by Louis Hemon are novels about the struggle for truth in insular communities where life is pervaded by religion. Sorensen's novel is set in the Latter day Saint town of Templeton, Utah, during the inter-War period. Hemon's plot unfolds around the turn of the century in the deeply Catholic territory of Lake St. John in northern Quebec. Although distant from one another in time and place, these novels are similar not only in the characters ad lifestyles they portray, but in the common archetypal patter they follow.

Charley In The Wind, Dave Wolverton Jan 1985

Charley In The Wind, Dave Wolverton

Inscape

"You better ask him," I whispered. "Why me?" "Because he won't let me if I ask." "He's your father--you better ask," Charley said. "Shhh," I hissed, stepping around Charley as we approached the driveway to the house. I was reminded by his high cheek bones and the way his black hair flew in the wind what a strange pair we must look--his rich brown skin, like that of a catfish, contrasting with my untanable hide, gleaming and freckled like the speckles of a brook trout. Though we were the same age, I topped him by four inches.

Belief, Justification, And Knowledge – Some Late-Medieval Epistemic Concerns, Ivan Boh

Quidditas

It has become a commonplace in contemporary analytic philosophy to offer a contextual definition of knowledge in terms of the following statement of necessary and sufficient conditions:

a knows that p if and only if

(i) a believes that p

(ii) p is the case

(iii) a is justified in believing that p

An enormous amount of literature on various aspects of this statement has been produced and the discussion continues.

Chapter Iii: Occupations Of Danish Immigrants Jan 1985

Chapter Iii: Occupations Of Danish Immigrants

The Bridge

When the Danish immigrants arrived in America, their career plans were influenced by economic aspirations and occupational background. Nearly half of the immigrants had worked in agriculture, chiefly as landless laborers. They frequently planned to acquire land of their own. Most of the rest were urban laborers or artisans hoping to find higher wages and broader opportunities in America. The motivating force behind most emigration was dissatisfaction with the economic situation in Denmark. In looking for something new and better, emigrants indicated their willingness to accept the various occupations which America offered. After all, life had to be better in …

In Debt To Heritage Denmark, Hermansen-Jensen, Nysted, Otto G. Hoiberg, Reviewer, Elise Hermansen Olsen

The Bridge

This is the life story of the late Elise Hermansen Olsen, as portrayed in autobiographical materials edited admirably by her still-active husband, Dr. C. Arild Olsen. It mirrors the various interrelated ways in which Elise "lived her Danish heritage" - by use of the Danish language in speech and song, by a deep appreciation of that country's literature, by perpetuation of its characteristic customs, and by living a life geared to its distinctive values.

Preserving The Source: Early Microfilming Efforts Of The Genealogical Society Of Utah, 1938-1950, Kahlile B. Mehr

Theses and Dissertations

The Genealogical Society of Utah initiated a worldwide microfilming program at the advent of modern microfilm technology. It succeeded in negotiating for and filming records because of the religious commitment of its leaders and workers, the financial assistance of the LDS Church, the increased concern for records loss as demonstrated by World War II, the maturation of microfilm technology after the war, and the concentration of many religious records in civil archives. Religious commitment enthused the Society's leaders to persist in their efforts in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The resources of the Church permitted the filming to continue without …
